To check a 24/7 YouTube stream remotely, open YouTube Studio on a compatible Android phone and review its live metrics; for automatic ingest checks, build a monitor around the YouTube Live Streaming API. YouTube’s documented tools provide status and health information, but the official sources cited here do not establish configurable email or push alerts when an encoder stops sending data.
Choose what you need to monitor
There are three different questions an operator might mean by “Is my stream still working?” They require different checks:
- Is YouTube receiving the encoder feed? Check stream status and health in Live Control Room, or use the Live Streaming API.
- Can viewers see playback that is moving? Check the public playback separately. A reachable watch page alone does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy encoder feed.
- Will someone be notified if something fails? The YouTube documentation cited here describes dashboards and API data, not a configurable encoder-failure email or push-alert feature.
For a simple remote check, use YouTube Studio on a phone. For an unattended check, an API-based monitor can inspect ingest state, but it requires development and maintenance. A playback check can complement either approach if the audience experience is the concern.
Check stream health from a phone
Use YouTube Studio on Android
YouTube documents live stream metrics in the YouTube Studio Android app. That makes an existing compatible Android phone a practical remote dashboard when you are away from the computer running the encoder. Open the stream’s metrics in the app and review the available live information. YouTube’s documentation does not establish that every desktop Live Control Room control is available on mobile, so use a computer if you need a control or detail that is not shown in the app.

Use Live Control Room for status and error details
YouTube’s Live Control Room displays stream status and specific error information while a stream is running. If a metric looks wrong or the stream reports an error, treat that status as the starting point for diagnosis rather than assuming the public watch page tells the whole story.

Automate an incoming-feed check with the API
For a developer or technical operator, the YouTube Live Streaming API exposes the incoming feed as a liveStream resource. A checker can inspect the resource’s status and health fields, then apply its own rules for logging or alert delivery. The API supplies signals; it is not a turnkey alert service.
Interpret the stream status
The status.streamStatus field can be active, created, error, inactive, or ready. In YouTube’s API definition, active means “the user is receiving data via the stream”; inactive means data is not being received. These are ingest states, not a guarantee that viewers can play the broadcast successfully.

Read the health fields as well
The status.healthStatus.status field can be good, ok, bad, or noData. The API also provides a health update timestamp and configuration issue details. Health information can surface problems such as insufficient video output or unsupported configuration. A useful monitor should consider both stream state and health, rather than treating a single successful API response as proof of a healthy stream.

Plan for the monitor’s own failure modes
An automated checker only helps while its dependencies work. Decide how you will detect or recover from failure of the monitoring host, network, API credentials, and alert-delivery channel. A monitor that can query ingest health but cannot deliver its alert is not a dependable notification path.

A stream can have an incoming-feed status worth checking while the separate viewer-facing question remains unanswered: is the public broadcast actually visible and moving? If that is your concern, add an independent playback check. The official YouTube references above describe ingest status, health, and monitoring for the broadcaster; they do not prescribe a particular third-party playback monitor.

YouTube’s private monitor stream is for the broadcaster to review or test content. The API overview does not describe it as an unattended, off-site alert service.
What YouTube’s documented tools do—and do not—establish about alerts
The cited official documentation establishes stream metrics, Live Control Room status and error information, and API status and health fields. It does not establish that YouTube offers a configurable mobile push notification or email alert specifically when an encoder feed is interrupted. Do not rely on such an alert unless you verify that the feature is available for your account and configuration.
