Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor one YouTube livestream, match your upload capacity to the video bitrate for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then leave room for other network traffic. YouTube recommends 20% headroom. As a practical guide, that means roughly 17 Mbps of available upload for 1080p30 H.264 or 21 Mbps for 1080p60 H.264—not merely an internet plan advertised with those numbers.
Upload speed targets by resolution, frame rate, and codec
YouTube’s figures below are recommended video bitrates for the incoming stream, not internet-plan speed requirements. For the approximate upload targets in the H.264 column, the bitrate is divided by 0.8 to leave 20% of connection capacity unused. Those targets are calculations from YouTube’s separate headroom guidance, not additional YouTube-published bitrate recommendations. Audio and other network use need capacity too. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance lists 128 Kbps stereo audio in its advanced encoder settings.
| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 recommended video bitrate | Approximate upload target with 20% headroom | AV1/H.265 recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p30 or 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 17 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 21 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps | 26 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps | 41 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 4K/2160p30 | 42 Mbps | 51 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
| 4K/2160p60 | 50 Mbps | 60 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
Use the bitrate for the codec your encoder actually sends. YouTube’s recommended AV1/H.265 video bitrates are lower than its H.264 recommendations for the same listed resolution and frame rate. Do not assume your encoder is using a more efficient codec without checking its settings.
How much upload speed do I need for 1080p?
For H.264, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps of video bitrate at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60. With 20% headroom, the approximate available-upload targets are 17 Mbps and 21 Mbps, respectively. At AV1/H.265, YouTube’s recommended video bitrates are 10 Mbps at 1080p30 and 12 Mbps at 1080p60; allow spare capacity around the bitrate you actually send.

Frame rate matters: 1080p60 needs more bitrate than 1080p30 in YouTube’s H.264 settings. “1080p speed” is therefore not one fixed figure.
How much upload speed do I need for 4K livestreaming?
For H.264, YouTube recommends 42 Mbps of video bitrate for 4K/2160p30 and 50 Mbps for 4K/2160p60. Applying 20% headroom gives approximate available-upload targets of 51 Mbps and 60 Mbps. For AV1/H.265, the recommended video bitrates are 30 Mbps at 4K30 and 35 Mbps at 4K60. These targets assume the connection’s capacity is available to the stream; other uploads and shared use can require more.

YouTube says 2160p/4K streams cannot use low-latency optimization; they are optimized for quality at normal latency. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
Calculate the upload capacity your stream needs
- Choose the stream format. Decide on resolution and frame rate, then identify the encoder’s outgoing codec.
- Find the corresponding video bitrate. Use YouTube’s recommended value for that exact combination in the table above. The video bitrate is not the whole network load; audio also uses bandwidth.
- Leave room for other traffic. YouTube recommends keeping 20% of upload capacity available. A practical single-stream estimate is the target video bitrate divided by 0.8. Add allowance for audio, other devices, and applications that upload at the same time. YouTube’s streaming tips say the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommend leaving room.
- Measure upload, not just download. Run an upload speed test where and when you plan to broadcast. Download bandwidth is often higher than upload bandwidth, so a fast download result does not establish that the outgoing stream has enough capacity.
- Test a realistic broadcast. Include movement and audio similar to the real programme, check the preview, and review YouTube’s stream-health messages before and during the event.
What changes the result in practice?
Shared connections and concurrent uploads
The relevant number is upload capacity available to the encoder while the stream is running, not the best speed the connection achieves when idle. Other people, cloud backups, file uploads, and applications can consume the headroom. YouTube advises accounting for shared bandwidth and testing realistically in its streaming tips.

Stability as well as speed
A connection can test fast and still suffer congestion or interruptions during a broadcast. Test before going live and monitor the Live Control Room’s stream health. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. If you are troubleshooting a wireless connection, testing an Ethernet connection is an optional way to check whether the local wireless link is contributing; it cannot increase the upload capacity your provider supplies.
Encoder settings
YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, and up to 60 fps. Its guidance recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, not over four seconds, and recommends RTMPS. These are encoder settings, distinct from the upload capacity calculation. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Streaming to more than one platform
If your local encoder sends separate streams to multiple platforms, add the target bitrate of every outgoing stream before estimating upload needs. YouTube’s example combines a 6 Mbps stream and a 4 Mbps stream into 10 Mbps total, then recommends 15–20 Mbps upload for that total, especially on a shared connection. Its simulstream guidance recommends upload capacity of 1.5 to 2 times the sum of target bitrates. Test the actual setup and monitor the Live Control Room’s Stream health tab. See YouTube’s guide to streaming across platforms.
This is different from a cloud relay: YouTube describes cloud service encoders as receiving one high-quality feed and redistributing it to multiple channels or resolutions. With a relay, the local upload calculation may be based on the single feed sent to that service, rather than every destination stream. The service’s own requirements and reliability need to be evaluated separately.

For a prerecorded YouTube stream: let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep an uploaded documentary or other prerecorded video looping on YouTube, rather than broadcast a live camera or local encoder, StreamNeo runs that stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it includes 10 GB storage per slot, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
For a continuous prerecorded stream, the upload happens to StreamNeo rather than requiring your computer to keep sending the stream to YouTube. Your initial upload still needs enough time and connection capacity; the upload-time calculator can help estimate it. StreamNeo is for uploaded video and YouTube streams, not camera broadcasts. Start StreamNeo’s free first day.
Troubleshooting upload-speed problems
- Download speed is high, but the stream buffers or drops. Check upload speed specifically; download performance does not tell you the outgoing capacity.
- The stream works when tested alone but fails during the event. Retest with the expected movement, audio, other users, and applications active. Reduce competing uploads or choose a lower bitrate/resolution if available upload headroom is inadequate.
- 1080p60 is unstable while 1080p30 works. The higher frame rate has a higher recommended H.264 bitrate in YouTube’s table. Recalculate with the correct frame-rate row and check available upload capacity.
- One destination works, but simulstreaming does not. Add the bitrates of all locally sent streams and apply YouTube’s 1.5–2× upload guidance; check the stream-health tab during a test.
- The speed test looks adequate, but the stream still breaks. Capacity alone cannot rule out connectivity disruption or congestion. Run a realistic pre-event test and watch stream health during the broadcast.
YouTube says expensive equipment is not required to start and recommends a test stream. A new camera or encoder will not substitute for sufficient, reliable outbound bandwidth. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
