To host a video privately on YouTube, set its visibility to Private in YouTube Studio and, if you want specific people to watch, share it with their email addresses. Private videos are limited to the owner and people selected for sharing; they do not appear in public YouTube search or on your channel’s Videos tab. Choose Unlisted instead only when anyone with the link may watch and reshare it.
Private, Unlisted, or Public: which should you choose?
| Setting | Who can watch | Discovery and channel presence | Can the access be passed on? | Comments | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private | You and the people you select for private sharing. | Does not appear in public search results or on your channel’s Videos tab. | Access is granted to selected viewers rather than anyone who has a URL. | Not available. | Restricting a video to chosen viewers. |
| Unlisted | Anyone with the link. | Normally absent from search and your channel’s Videos tab, but it may appear in a public playlist. | Yes. Anyone with the URL can pass it on. | Available. | Convenient link sharing when resharing is acceptable. |
| Public | Anyone on YouTube. | May appear on your channel, in search, related videos, recommendations, and subscriber feeds. | Anyone can access it. | Available. | Making a video openly accessible. |
Unlisted is not the same as private: a link recipient can forward the URL, and anyone who gets it can watch. Private is the appropriate choice when the viewer list matters more than convenience or comments. YouTube notes that its systems and human reviewers may review even private videos for ad suitability, copyright, and abuse prevention.
Set an existing video to Private on a computer
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Open Content.
- Find the video and open its Visibility control.
- Choose Private, then save.
Once saved, the video is no longer publicly discoverable through YouTube search or your channel’s Videos tab. You can still share it with selected people using the private-sharing controls.
Set visibility while uploading
- Start the upload in YouTube Studio and complete the upload details.
- On the upload workflow’s Visibility page, choose Private.
- Save or publish the video with that visibility setting.
If you close the upload window before choosing visibility, YouTube says the upload is saved as private on the Content page. Treat that as an interrupted-upload fallback; check the video’s Visibility setting before sharing it.

Change visibility on a phone
In either the YouTube app or YouTube Studio app, open the video’s edit controls, tap Visibility, select Private, and save. YouTube documents this basic flow for both Android and iPhone or iPad. Labels and screen layout can vary with app version.
Share a private video with selected people
- In YouTube Studio, open the video’s Visibility control.
- Select Share privately.
- Enter the email addresses of the people you want to invite, then save.
- Send recipients the specific video link and tell them to follow the invitation and sign in to the account the video was shared with.
If an invited viewer cannot open the video, first confirm they are signed in to the account that received access, then resend the specific video link. YouTube’s privacy help says invited viewers do not need a Google Account, while its troubleshooting guidance says viewers must be signed in to YouTube with the account the owner shared with. Avoid promising access while signed out; have invitees follow the invitation and use the invited account.

What private hosting does—and does not—provide
- It limits the audience through YouTube settings. A private video is for you and the viewers you select, not anyone who finds or receives a link.
- It is not a comment-enabled option. If viewers need to comment, Unlisted supports comments, but its URL can be reshared.
- It does not exempt the video from platform review. YouTube says private videos may be reviewed for ad suitability, copyright, and abuse prevention.
- It is a YouTube visibility setting. You do not need a physical camera, drive, or creator accessory to make a video private.
Check older Unlisted videos if links or embeds stopped working
YouTube’s legacy guidance says that, starting July 23, 2021, affected Unlisted videos uploaded before January 1, 2017 were made Private unless their owners opted out. Old unlisted links and embeds could therefore stop working. Open the video in Studio, check its current visibility, and change it if the intended audience should again be able to use a link.
The same legacy guidance describes sharing a legacy private video with up to 50 email addresses and says recipients need a YouTube or Google account. This is a detail of that legacy-content guidance, not a universal current limit for all private videos; check the controls in Studio for the specific video.

Troubleshooting private-video access
An invited person sees an error or cannot find the video
- Ask them to sign in to YouTube using the account whose email address you shared with.
- Send the direct link to the specific video rather than relying on them to find it on your channel.
- In Studio, check that the video is still Private and that the intended address was added under Share privately.
A link recipient cannot watch an Unlisted video
- Confirm the video is still set to Unlisted; its owner may have changed visibility.
- Ask the recipient to use the complete URL. If the link is old, inspect the video’s current visibility in Studio, especially if it was uploaded before 2017.
Viewers need to leave comments
Private videos do not support comments. If comments are necessary and it is acceptable for recipients to forward the URL, change the video to Unlisted. If access must remain limited to selected viewers, keep it Private and use another communication method for feedback.

Private video hosting is controlled by YouTube’s visibility settings. If your goal is instead to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and monthly service is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
