You can schedule a YouTube Live event in YouTube Studio, but scheduling alone does not start a broadcast. For an encoder stream, you still need a live feed from your encoder; YouTube’s documented workflow ends with clicking Go live after the preview appears. The Auto-start setting can change how the encoder starts the broadcast, but it does not turn on your computer or create the video feed.

What “go live automatically” means on YouTube

A scheduled stream is an upcoming event page, not a video feed. Scheduling lets viewers find the event and select Notify me; it does not launch your computer, encoder, or program at the scheduled time. To broadcast, a source still has to send video and audio to YouTube.

YouTube’s Auto-start setting lets creators start streaming from an encoder when enabled. It is encoder-start automation—not a timer that wakes a powered-off computer, opens streaming software, chooses a source, or starts a prerecorded program. YouTube’s settings guidance covers encoder and mobile streams, not webcam streams.

Check channel eligibility before scheduling

  • Your channel must be verified.
  • Your channel must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days.
  • You must be at least 16 years old to livestream.

These are YouTube’s stated eligibility conditions; check YouTube Help if your account or local requirements may differ. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility help

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Schedule the event in YouTube Studio

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live.
  2. Open Manage, then select Schedule stream.
  3. Choose whether to reuse settings from an earlier stream or create a new one.
  4. Enter the event details available in Studio, including title, privacy, and scheduled date and time. Review the details before saving.
  5. Share or promote the upcoming event page if you want viewers to find it in advance. Viewers may select Notify me for a reminder; that reminder is separate from starting your broadcast.

Interface labels can change. YouTube’s current scheduling instructions are here: Schedule a live stream.

Choose how you will send the live feed

Method Best suited to Auto-start scope
Webcam A quick stream using a computer’s webcam and microphone, without a separate encoder workflow. YouTube’s documented encoder/mobile Auto-start and Auto-stop instructions do not apply to webcam streams.
Mobile Streaming from a supported mobile device. YouTube’s settings guidance includes mobile streams.
Encoder Gameplay, overlays, multiple production inputs, or more controlled production. An encoder can be software or hardware. You can start or stop streaming from the encoder when the setting is on; the encoder and source still need to be running.
Console Broadcasting gameplay through a supported console workflow. Do not assume encoder Auto-start automates the console workflow.

YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events, but says expensive equipment is not necessary to get started. Choose a method based on the production you need, not on the assumption that scheduling will automate the equipment. YouTube’s guide to live streaming

Set up an encoder and its stream key

  1. In the event’s Live Control Room, locate the stream connection details, including the YouTube Live server URL and stream key.
  2. Enter those details in your encoder’s streaming settings. The URL tells the encoder where to send the stream; the key identifies the stream it should connect to.
  3. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not show it in a public screenshot or share it with anyone who should not be able to send a feed to your stream. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  4. Set up the video and audio source in your encoder, then save or apply the configuration. A scheduled event without a configured, transmitting source will not show a live picture.

YouTube’s instructions for connecting an encoder explain the stream URL and key: Set up your encoder for live streaming.

Enable Auto-start, then understand what it changes

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live, choose Manage, and select the scheduled stream.
  2. Open the stream settings and find Auto-start. Enable it if you want the encoder’s incoming stream to start the broadcast without the separate manual start control.
  3. Save the setting, then confirm your encoder is configured to send the correct event’s feed. YouTube describes the effect this way: “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.”
  4. Do not interpret this as automatic startup of the encoder or its source. Your computer or hardware encoder must be powered and connected, the software or device must be sending video, and the source must be ready.

Auto-stop is a related control for stopping from the encoder; neither setting supplies a feed or powers equipment. YouTube’s current settings guidance describes the scope and behavior: Manage live stream settings.

Test before the scheduled time

  1. Set up the encoder well ahead of the event. YouTube recommends setting it up two hours before a livestream.
  2. Start sending the stream at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start, as YouTube recommends.
  3. Wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room. Check picture, sound, framing, overlays, and that the correct event is selected.
  4. For the standard scheduled-encoder workflow, click Go live after the preview appears. If you enabled Auto-start, verify in advance how your encoder’s incoming feed starts the event; do not assume the event page itself will trigger it.
  5. Keep a local recording if the footage matters. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and recommends keeping a local archive backup.

The two-hour and 15-minute timings are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of uptime. See YouTube live streaming tips and YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.

Copyright and documentary footage

Scheduling does not grant permission to broadcast the material in your program. Before you stream a documentary, clips, music, archival footage, or other third-party material, confirm that you have the rights needed for the live broadcast and any resulting archive. YouTube’s copyright systems and policies can affect a live stream, including interrupting or restricting it. A scheduled event, an encoder, or a prerecorded source does not make copyrighted material safe to use.

Troubleshooting a scheduled stream that does not start

  • The event page exists but viewers see no live video: scheduling creates the event, not the feed. Start the encoder or other selected source and confirm it is sending video to the event.
  • The encoder is sending, but the event has not gone live: wait for the preview, check the selected event and stream key, and use Go live in the standard encoder workflow. If using Auto-start, confirm it is enabled for that stream and that the encoder is actually transmitting.
  • Auto-start does nothing: it does not power on a device or launch software. Start the computer/encoder and source, check network connectivity, and confirm the stream settings.
  • The wrong event receives the feed: compare the encoder’s stream key and server URL with the intended event’s details. Keep keys private and replace an exposed key.
  • No preview appears: check that the encoder is connected, the source is active, the URL and key are correct, and the network can transmit. Test before the event rather than waiting for the scheduled minute.
  • The broadcast is interrupted or restricted: check YouTube Studio for account or stream notices, verify channel eligibility, and review the rights for the program’s video and audio.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous prerecorded YouTube stream rather than an event that starts from a live encoder, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home, it handles any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
