What happened to Piers Morgan?
In a hospital update on January 18, 2026, Morgan said he had tripped on a small step in a London hotel restaurant and fractured the neck of his femur so badly that he needed a new hip. The Independent reported that he expected to use crutches for six weeks. The Independent’s report summarized his account.
PA Media also reported the incident in a story republished by STV News. It quoted Morgan’s joke: “New year off to a cracking start, I blame (US) president (Donald) Trump.” STV News’ report likewise describes the fall and his hospital update.
Why did Morgan say he blamed Donald Trump?
“I blame Donald Trump” was the punchline to Morgan’s January hospital update. The reports describe a trip on a small step as the cause of the fall; they do not establish that Trump caused it. Read the remark as humor, not a substantiated claim about responsibility.

What did Morgan say about recovery?
In the January update, Morgan’s expected recovery included six weeks on crutches and no long-haul flights for 12 weeks, according to The Independent. In a first-person article published February 7, Morgan said he had undergone a total hip replacement and described additional restrictions that he attributed to his surgeon: no alcohol for a month, no flying for three months, and no swimming or golf for four months. He also wrote that he faced weeks on crutches and daily rehabilitation. Morgan’s February account records his personal experience.
The flight wording differs between the two updates: the January report specifies no long-haul flights for 12 weeks, while the February article says his surgeon advised no flying for three months. These are Morgan’s personal accounts, not general recovery guidance. No named surgeon or direct statement from the surgeon appears in the reports.

What is established—and what is not?
