How to Get Clear Audio in a Live Stream

Clear live-stream sound starts with reducing room noise, checking the right microphone, and using OBS filters sparingly. Test the stream playback before going live.

Clear live-stream audio starts with a quiet room, a correctly selected microphone, and a level that stays intelligible without distorting. Fix noise at its source before reaching for filters; then use OBS processing only for the problem each filter is designed to solve. Finally, test the actual stream and listen to its playback before the event.

1. Make the room quieter before adjusting software

Choose the quietest practical location and listen for wind, traffic, appliances, HVAC, computer fans, and keyboard noise. YouTube recommends a quiet location and specifically notes wind, traffic, and appliances as possible sources of interference in live video (YouTube filming tips for live streams).

Move away from the noise, close a window, silence avoidable alerts, or turn off a noisy appliance if you can do so safely. A software filter is not a substitute for this step: OBS says its noise suppression is intended for mild background or white noise and generally is not effective against substantial noise in a loud room (OBS Noise Suppression Filter).

2. Select and position the microphone

In your streaming software, confirm that the audio input is the microphone you intend to use—not a webcam mic, laptop mic, or unused device. Speak at the distance and volume you expect to use on air, and check that your voice is clear without becoming harsh or distorted.

YouTube notes that using a microphone can improve audio. A separate microphone is worth considering if the built-in one picks up too much room noise or does not capture speech clearly. Shure’s MV7 guide lists live streaming and content creation among its intended uses, but neither that fact nor the general microphone recommendation establishes that a particular model is right for every device, room, or budget (Shure MV7 User Guide).

3. Add OBS filters for specific problems

In OBS, open the microphone or audio source’s Filters and add only the processing that addresses something you can hear. OBS describes these filters as having different roles; applying several without monitoring can make speech less natural (OBS Filters Guide).

Filter What it does When to use it
Gain Raises a quiet source. Use when the voice is too low after checking microphone selection and placement.
Noise Suppression Reduces mild background or white noise. Try for modest fan or steady background noise; do not expect it to fix a loud room.
Noise Gate Cuts off quieter sound when you are not speaking. Use to reduce background noise between phrases, while ensuring speech beginnings and endings remain audible.
Expander Reduces quieter sound more gradually than a fixed gate. Try when a gate sounds abrupt; adjust carefully so quiet words are not lost.
Compressor Makes loud sounds quieter and reduces level variation. Use when voice volume varies substantially. OBS says a compressor is typically placed at or near the beginning of the filter chain; it can also duck desktop audio beneath a speaking microphone.
Limiter Restrains peaks above its threshold to help prevent distortion. Use for peak control. OBS says the limiter should be last in the filter chain.

Choose noise suppression carefully

OBS describes RNNoise as higher quality but more CPU-intensive, while Speex is configurable. Stronger Speex suppression can distort the voice, so listen for unnatural or watery speech rather than assuming more suppression is better (OBS Noise Suppression Filter).

Set levels by listening, not by copying numbers

There is no universal gain, gate threshold, compressor setting, or suppression amount that suits every microphone and room. Adjust while speaking at normal volume. Back off if words are clipped, the voice distorts, background noise swells between phrases, or a gate cuts off quiet syllables. A compressor controls loudness variation; a limiter is separate peak protection, not a substitute for setting a sensible input level (OBS Compressor Filter; OBS Limiter Filter).

4. Test the stream viewers will hear

  1. Recreate the planned setup: same room, microphone, speaking distance, and typical movement. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the actual event (YouTube filming tips for live streams).
  2. If you want to check the whole streaming path without a public broadcast, use an unlisted live stream where appropriate. Preview the stream and monitor audio and video quality, as YouTube recommends (YouTube encoder settings and streaming guidance; YouTube streaming tips).
  3. Listen to the stream playback, not only the local microphone monitor. Playback lets you check the signal after it has passed through the streaming setup, which may differ from what you hear locally.
  4. Have someone listen from another device or location if possible. Ask whether speech is easy to understand and whether music, room noise, or other audio is overpowering it.

For an encoder stream, YouTube advises keeping total bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving headroom. That supports stream reliability; if the stream is stable but speech sounds unclear, first revisit the room, mic selection and placement, level, and filters (YouTube streaming tips).

5. Troubleshoot common audio problems

What you hear Likely checks and fixes
Speech is quiet Confirm OBS selected the intended microphone; check its placement and input level. Use gain only if the source remains too quiet, then listen again for hiss or distortion.
Fan or steady room noise remains Reduce the noise physically where practical. Try moderate suppression for mild noise; stronger suppression can damage speech, and it is generally not effective against a very noisy room.
Words begin or end abruptly Lower the gate threshold or use a more gradual expander. Test quiet words and sentence endings, not only loud speech.
Loud words or peaks sound distorted Reduce the input level if it is clipping. A compressor can reduce level variation; a limiter can help restrain peaks when placed last in the filter chain.
Voice sounds unnatural after filtering Reduce or remove suppression and other aggressive processing. Compare a test with fewer filters; do not assume stronger settings produce clearer speech.
Local monitoring sounds fine but stream playback does not Check the stream preview and listen to playback from another device. Verify the selected source and filter chain in the streaming path, then repeat a test under the planned conditions.
