Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFirst find out where the frames are being lost: during local file playback, inside OBS rendering or encoding, across the network to YouTube, or only on viewers’ screens. Each points to a different fix; there is no single setting that reliably fixes every file-switching setup.
Identify which kind of frame loss you have
“Drops frames” can describe several different symptoms. OBS distinguishes network dropped frames from performance problems such as rendering or encoding lag. Viewers may also report buffering even when OBS is not dropping frames. Check the OBS Stats window and local preview during a reproduced file change before altering settings. See the OBS stream connection troubleshooting guide, OBS encoding performance guide, and OBS dropped frames guidance.
- In OBS, open View > Stats, then reproduce the file switch. Watch the preview and note whether the picture stutters locally, rendering or encoding lag rises, or the network dropped-frame counter increases.
- Ask viewers whether they see the same problem. If the local preview and Stats look normal but viewers report buffering, do not assume a file-source or network dropped-frame fault.
- Use the matching troubleshooting section below. If more than one symptom appears, address each independently.
Check the playback source and switching behavior
For one video file: Media Source
OBS’s Media Source is intended for an individual media file. Review its playback controls, including Loop and Restart playback when source becomes active, if they match the behavior you want. These options control playback; enabling them is not a universal frame-drop remedy.
Also check Close file when inactive. OBS says this unloads a hidden source to free memory; when shown again, it may take a short time to reload and appear. If the stutter happens precisely as the source returns, compare the result with this setting turned off. That may use more memory, so observe system load as well. Consult the OBS media sources guide for source controls.

For a playlist: VLC Video
OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists and has a Loop Playlist control. It relies on VLC libraries, so install VLC if the source is missing. OBS specifies matching 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS. Check the playlist and source visibility behavior, but do not assume that switching to VLC Video will always be smoother: source choice depends on whether you need one file or a playlist.
If the file stutters in the local preview
- Check whether the pause coincides with a source becoming active or a file being unloaded and reloaded. Compare Media Source behavior with Close file when inactive disabled.
- For a playlist, verify that the intended playlist and looping behavior are configured on the VLC Video source.
- If the problem persists across source settings, reduce system workload: simplify the scene, remove unnecessary expensive sources or filters, and use media resolution appropriate to your stream output.
- Reproduce the issue while watching Stats. A local playback hitch alone does not establish that YouTube or the network is dropping frames.
If OBS reports rendering or encoding lag
This points to OBS or system workload rather than proving a network fault. Simplify scenes, reduce demanding sources and filters, and lower media demands where practical. If needed, test a lower output resolution or frame rate. OBS gives 30 fps as an example to try when 60 fps is not working; it is a troubleshooting option, not a universal recommended setting. Change one variable at a time and compare Stats during the same file switch.

If OBS’s network dropped-frame counter rises
OBS attributes dropped frames or intermittent disconnections to a network issue between your computer and the remote stream ingest server: “If you experience dropped frames or intermittent disconnections while streaming, there is a network issue between your computer and the remote stream ingest server.” Investigate whether the connection can sustain the configured bitrate and follow OBS’s network troubleshooting guidance. The fact that the counter rises near a file change does not by itself show that the file caused the connection problem.
Dynamic bitrate is an option for congestion, but it reduces video quality and does not fix the underlying connection issue. Treat it as a mitigation, not a root-cause repair.

If only viewers report buffering
Viewer buffering can occur while OBS shows no dropped frames. Compare reports from more than one viewer and check the OBS preview and Stats before changing playback-source settings. If OBS counters remain normal, the available evidence does not identify the cause as a local file transition; avoid treating a viewer-side report alone as proof of an OBS network drop.
Capture evidence if the problem continues
A title or symptom description alone cannot identify a machine-specific cause. Reproduce the issue and record the details needed to narrow it down:

- Stats values showing rendering lag, encoding lag, and network dropped frames during the event.
- Whether the stutter appears in the local preview, only to viewers, or both.
Historical issue reports about media sources unloading when unused provide context for reload delays, but do not establish a general current OBS defect when changing files. Earlier release notes document some media-source fixes, not a general fix for this exact symptom. See the OBS Studio release notes.
