YouTube’s Live Control Room can also make a vertical version of a horizontal stream, or you can send a separate portrait feed with a second stream key.
Choose how to make the stream portrait
The right approach depends on whether you already have a portrait file and whether you also want a horizontal version for other viewers.
| Approach | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Media Source loop | Repeating a local portrait video with control over the scene and output. | You arrange the canvas yourself and must keep the encoder running. The documented workflow does not promise uninterrupted 24/7 operation. |
| YouTube Live Control Room layout | Creating a vertical version alongside a horizontal stream from Live Control Room. | The default is a center crop, which may cut off material near the edges. |
| Separate encoder feeds | Sending independently composed horizontal and portrait versions. | You need a second stream key and must send each format to its matching key. |
Loop a portrait video in OBS
1. Add the video file
- In OBS, select or create a scene.
- In the Sources panel, choose + → Media Source, give it a name, then select the local video file. OBS supports common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI and WebM.
- In the Media Source properties, enable Loop. OBS restarts the file when playback reaches the end.
For a playlist rather than one file, add a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. The VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed.
2. Set a portrait canvas and check the composition
In OBS, open Settings → Video. The Base (Canvas) Resolution is the layout space where you position sources; Output (Scaled) Resolution is the resolution sent to the stream. Set the canvas and output for the portrait presentation you intend to deliver, then resize, crop or position the source and inspect the preview. Keep important text, faces and action inside the visible frame.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Changing the base canvas later can require sources to be resized or repositioned. Get the composition right before the broadcast rather than assuming that changing the output alone will make a landscape scene look right in portrait.
3. Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live and open or create the stream in Live Control Room.
- In OBS, select YouTube as the service if it is available in the streaming settings. Otherwise, copy the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio into OBS.
- Keep the stream key private: YouTube describes it as functioning like the stream’s password and address.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Use it when your encoder and connection support it.

4. Test before the public stream
Start with a test or unlisted stream. Check the YouTube preview for portrait framing, playback and audio, and watch stream health before relying on the setup publicly. YouTube recommends testing before streaming and monitoring stream health during the event.
Use YouTube’s vertical layout for a second format
When you stream from Live Control Room, YouTube can output horizontal (16:9) and vertical (9:16) formats together by default. The vertical version initially uses a center crop of the horizontal feed. In the vertical preview’s editing canvas, you can choose Center crop, Fit to phone width or Stacked, and adjust zoom and position.

Check the vertical preview before going live. A center crop can remove side content, including text or action near the edges. You can continue adjusting the layout while live, but YouTube says you cannot add the vertical format after the stream has started.
For a Live Control Room stream, viewers in the Shorts feed on mobile see the vertical version while other viewers see the horizontal one. YouTube says the versions share a live chat, one go-live notification and one stream URL. The vertical live feed is available in the YouTube app, not on tablets; scheduled live streams and Premieres do not appear in that feed.

Send separate horizontal and portrait feeds from an encoder
Use separate feeds when a crop or stacked layout cannot preserve the composition you want. YouTube’s documented third-party dual-stream setup uses RTMP(S) and a second stream key for the vertical output.
- In Live Control Room, open the Stream tab and use the vertical preview’s Auto menu to select Encoder.
- Choose RTMP(S) and select the second stream key for the vertical feed.
- Configure the encoder to send the horizontal and portrait compositions to their corresponding keys. Confirm that the content and aspect ratio match each destination.
- Start the stream from YouTube Studio and check both previews and stream health.
Encoder settings and connection checks
YouTube’s published encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds; and AAC or MP3 audio. Choose settings your encoder and upload connection can sustain, and test the upload bitrate and stream conditions before the event.

| H.264 example from YouTube’s encoder guidance | Minimum listed bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube-published encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer or internet connection can sustain them. If the stream health warning appears, reduce the bitrate or output resolution and test again.
Troubleshoot common problems
The video stops instead of repeating
- Open the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled.
- For a playlist, confirm the source is VLC Video, VLC is installed, and Loop Playlist is enabled.
The portrait image is cropped or has black space
- Check the OBS preview and adjust the source’s size and position on the base canvas.
- Confirm both Base (Canvas) and Output (Scaled) resolutions are set for the intended presentation.
- If using YouTube’s vertical version of a horizontal feed, test Fit to phone width or Stacked rather than accepting the default center crop.
YouTube does not receive the stream
- Verify that OBS uses the stream key and server details for the intended YouTube stream.
- For separate feeds, confirm the portrait output is sent to the second key and the horizontal output to its corresponding key.
- Check the encoder’s connection and YouTube stream health; test with a lower bitrate if the upload connection cannot sustain the selected setting.
The vertical option is missing after going live
YouTube says the vertical format cannot be added after the stream has started. Stop and configure the layout before starting the next stream.
