Remote Audio Production for Live Streaming: Setup and Tips

Build a reliable live-stream audio path in OBS, from microphone and interface routing to level checks, monitoring, filters, and fixes for common problems.

For reliable live-stream audio, build a short signal path, set gain at the microphone or interface first, and check what OBS actually receives before you go live. Monitor both the source and the OBS mix, keep the final digital signal below 0 dBFS, and add filters only to solve an audible problem.

Choose a signal path that fits the production

Start with the sources viewers need to hear: typically a microphone, and possibly application or game audio, music, alerts, or a DAW mix. Keep the microphone and other audio sources separately identifiable in OBS when you need to adjust them independently.

Workflow When it fits Trade-offs
USB microphone connected to the computer One speaker and a small number of sources. Simple to set up, with fewer separate hardware inputs and routing options.
XLR microphone connected to a USB audio interface You need an XLR or instrument input, interface monitoring, or additional input and output options. Provides more routing and gain controls, but requires a compatible interface and cabling. XLR alone does not guarantee better sound; the room, microphone placement, and level still matter.
DAW and interface loopback routed into OBS A DAW mix needs to join the stream alongside a separately captured microphone. A virtual route can be convenient where supported, but the setup depends on the interface, operating system, and software.
Two-interface routing The cited PreSonus Studio One workflow when loopback is unavailable. Requires extra hardware and cabling. PreSonus describes this approach for Studio One on Windows; it is not a universal requirement.

When choosing an interface, consider how many inputs and outputs you need, whether you want direct monitoring, whether loopback is necessary, and which operating system and audio software you use. Ableton describes common interface functions such as multiple inputs and outputs and direct monitoring in its audio interface setup guide.

Connect the microphone or interface in OBS

USB microphone

  1. Connect the microphone to the computer and select it as the input in OBS. Check that the intended microphone is active rather than a built-in or unrelated device.
  2. Speak at your usual distance and volume while watching the OBS Audio Mixer meter. If the microphone has a headphone or monitor output, listen there too.

Microphone connected through an interface

  1. Connect the microphone to the intended physical interface input and set the input gain on the interface.
  2. In OBS, add an Audio Input Capture source and select the interface. Focusrite’s OBS setup instructions describe this workflow for its interfaces.
  3. If one microphone is connected to a Focusrite interface, open OBS Advanced Audio Properties for that source and check Mono so the voice is centered rather than appearing only on one stereo side.

For a DAW feed, keep its return distinct from the microphone if you need independent control. PreSonus documents routing a virtual stereo output from Studio One to OBS while capturing the microphone separately. If loopback is not available in that workflow, PreSonus describes connecting the main interface outputs to a second interface with two TRS cables. See its Studio One and OBS guide for Windows for that vendor-specific method.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set gain and check the complete signal

Set the level at the source before relying on the OBS fader. As the OBS Audio Mixer Guide puts it, “Always start at the device in question.” The guide was dated April 3, 2026: OBS Audio Mixer Guide.

  1. Set the microphone or interface input gain while speaking or performing at the loudest level you expect during the stream.
  2. Watch the OBS meter and listen at the source if it offers a monitor output. Then use OBS audio monitoring to hear the signal reaching the application.
  3. Make a short OBS recording with normal speech, music or other routine sources, and the loudest expected moments. Listen back before going live.
  4. Check the full mix: microphone, application or game audio, music, alerts, and DAW return. Confirm that the voice is centered when appropriate, no source is doubled through both a direct input and desktop capture, and speech remains intelligible at ordinary listening volume.

OBS defines 0 dBFS as the digital ceiling: a final stream or recording at or above it can distort. Keep the output below that ceiling. See OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details (dated February 13, 2022) for the explanation of digital audio levels.

Use filters only to fix a specific problem

Filters change what reaches the stream; they do not replace a clean source level or a careful listening check. Adjust one at a time, then test both normal and quiet speech.

  • Compressor: Reduces louder peaks. OBS says it is typically placed near the beginning of a filter chain. Its sidechain option can lower desktop audio under a microphone. See the OBS Compressor Filter guide.
  • Expander: Can reduce low-level sound more smoothly than a gate. Set its threshold cautiously: too high a threshold can cut off quiet words. See the OBS Expander Filter guide.

There is no single filter setting that suits every voice, microphone, room, and mix. Listen to the result after each adjustment rather than applying processing by habit.

Troubleshoot common audio problems

  • No microphone signal in OBS: Confirm the physical connection, the selected device in the Audio Input Capture source, and the interface input used by the microphone. Watch the mixer while speaking.
  • Voice is audible on only one side: For a single microphone on a Focusrite interface, enable Mono in Advanced Audio Properties for that source to center it.
  • Distortion or harsh peaks: Reduce the level at the microphone or interface first, then check the OBS meter and make another test recording. Ensure the final digital output remains below 0 dBFS.
  • Voice is too quiet or inconsistent: Check the source gain before raising only the OBS fader. Test at normal and loud speaking levels, then consider a compressor if loud peaks are the specific issue.
  • Quiet words disappear: Lower an expander threshold that is cutting off speech, or remove the filter and reassess. Test quiet as well as normal speech after each change.
  • Desktop audio or music masks speech: Confirm that the sources have separate controls, then consider compressor sidechain ducking to lower desktop audio under the microphone. Listen to the complete mix.
  • Echo, doubled sound, or a hollow voice: Check whether the microphone or DAW is reaching OBS through both a direct source and another capture route. Disable the duplicate path and record another test.
  • DAW audio is missing: Verify the DAW output route and the corresponding OBS source. Loopback availability and configuration depend on the interface and software; the PreSonus two-interface method applies to its Studio One for Windows workflow, not every system.

Or let it run in the cloud

Remote audio production still needs a clean, monitored mix before you upload a recording. If your goal is to keep prerecorded material live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.

Each slot streams the uploaded quality as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month.
