Fix a Wowza Streaming Engine SSL error by identifying the exact endpoint that fails, then checking that endpoint’s certificate, keystore settings, port binding, network access, and TLS compatibility. A browser warning, a “Could not load keystore” log entry, and a failed secure WebSocket can have different causes—and may use separate SSL configurations.
Identify which Wowza endpoint is failing
Before changing a certificate or port, record the exact URL, port, client or browser message, and related Wowza log entry. Streaming Engine host ports, Manager HTTPS, REST API SSL, and WebRTC secure WebSockets do not necessarily share a certificate binding or configuration file.
| Endpoint | Where to check SSL configuration |
|---|---|
| Streaming Engine host port | VHost.xml, in the <SSLConfig> section |
| Manager HTTPS | manager/conf/tomcat.properties; restart Wowza Streaming Engine Manager after changing these settings |
| REST API | Server.xml, in its own SSLConfig |
| WebRTC secure WebSocket | Check the client’s wss:// URL and the SSL configuration on the Wowza host port it connects to |
Wowza’s troubleshooting guide maps common messages to possible causes, but the message alone does not confirm the cause. Verify it against the configuration and logs for the endpoint that actually fails. Wowza’s SSL certificate troubleshooting guide covers these symptom patterns.
Why does the browser show “Not Secure” or ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID?
These warnings commonly indicate that the certificate is self-signed or that the certificate chain is incomplete. They can also arise when the certificate does not identify the hostname the client requested, or when the client cannot build a chain to an issuer it trusts. Check the certificate presented by the exact hostname and port that produced the warning, including its identity, expiration, issuer, and required intermediate certificates.

Wowza documents procedures for self-signed certificates, CA-issued certificates, importing an existing certificate, and StreamLock. Choose based on whether the intended clients trust the issuer, the domain names the certificate covers, how renewal will be handled, the keystore format supported by the deployed version, and who controls issuance and private keys. A self-signed certificate can suit a controlled environment where clients are configured to trust it; external clients generally need a certificate they already trust. See Wowza’s SSL certificate configuration procedures.
StreamLock certificate has expired
Wowza Support says an expired StreamLock certificate cannot be renewed; its guidance is to create a new certificate and adjust playback links that used the old one. Verify the current account and service procedure before making that change. Wowza Support’s common SSL configuration errors also identifies an incorrectly entered StreamLock certificate domain in the keystore path as a possible configuration problem.

How do I fix “Could not load keystore” in the Wowza logs?
Check three things first: the configured file path, the password, and whether the configured keystore type matches the file’s actual format. Wowza’s VHost reference lists JKS as the default keystore type; that does not mean every .p12 or .pfx file is JKS. If the file is PKCS12, verify its format and use a configuration or conversion method supported by your installed version. Back up the keystore and relevant configuration before editing.
- Open the configuration for the failing endpoint, not a different SSL configuration.
- Confirm that the configured path names the intended file and that the Wowza process can read it.
- Verify the password against the keystore; also check for typing errors in any StreamLock domain included in the configured path.
- Determine the file’s actual format, then make the configured keystore type and the file format agree using a method supported by your Wowza version.
- Restart the service component affected by the change and retest the same hostname and port.
For Streaming Engine host-port settings, consult the VHost SSL configuration reference alongside the certificate procedures. Avoid changing unrelated endpoints to address a keystore error.

How do I install a CA-issued or StreamLock certificate?
Use Wowza’s procedure for the certificate type and endpoint you are configuring. The critical checks are that the certificate belongs to the hostname clients request, its chain includes the required intermediates, its keystore is readable, and its format and password match the endpoint configuration. A certificate can be installed correctly in one component while another component continues to present a different certificate.
For an existing certificate, follow Wowza’s documented import path rather than assuming that a file extension determines its keystore type. For StreamLock, verify the domain value used in the keystore path and check the service’s current renewal or replacement process. Wowza’s certificate configuration documentation describes the available paths.

Check HTTPS ports, bindings, and network access
If the certificate appears valid but the endpoint cannot be reached, confirm that the service is listening on the intended secure port, that another process has not occupied it, and that firewall and network rules permit access. Do not assume a single port number serves the Engine host port, Manager, and REST API.
For Manager HTTPS, Wowza Support says the HTTPS port must differ from its HTTP port, 8080. Check availability and firewall access for the selected HTTPS port. For WebRTC, the browser should connect with wss://, and the corresponding Wowza host port needs SSL configuration. A page served over HTTPS cannot use an insecure ws:// connection in modern browser contexts. Wowza Support’s practical port guidance is to make sure the port in use is open to the firewall. See the SSL configuration error guide.

Investigate TLS handshake and protocol errors
If the certificate loads but TLS negotiation fails, compare the protocol versions and cipher suites supported by the client and server. Wowza’s SSL guidance describes sslLogProtocolInfo and sslLogConnectionInfo for collecting protocol and cipher information. Use those details to distinguish a negotiation mismatch from a certificate-loading problem.
Wowza notes that Streaming Engine versions 4.8.18 and later include Java 11 or Java 21, which provide TLS 1.3 support; older versions may need a Java 11 runtime for TLS 1.3. Confirm the installed Engine and Java versions before changing runtime or protocol settings. If a protocol change is necessary, use the narrowest setting that meets client compatibility and security requirements, then test the affected clients. See Wowza’s SSL configuration improvement guide and its instructions for enabling specific TLS versions.
Validate the change and troubleshoot by symptom
After a change, restart the component specified by that setting. Test the exact hostname, port, and path from the affected client; inspect the certificate details in the browser and recheck server logs. For WebRTC, use browser network tools to verify that the secure WebSocket handshake succeeds. A configuration change is not confirmed until the target client and endpoint have been tested.
| Symptom | Check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| “Could not load keystore” | Configured path, file readability, password, and actual keystore format | Correct the mismatch for the affected endpoint; back up files before editing |
“Not Secure” or ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID |
Requested hostname, certificate identity, issuer trust, chain completeness, and expiration | Install or configure a certificate and chain appropriate for the intended clients |
| WebSocket connection fails | Whether the client uses wss://, the target host port has SSL configured, and the certificate is trusted |
Correct the secure URL or host-port SSL binding, then inspect the browser handshake |
| Connection times out or port refuses connection | Listening service, port conflict, firewall, and network reachability | Free or correct the port and allow the required network traffic |
| TLS handshake fails after the certificate loads | Protocol and cipher details from client and server logs | Check deployed Java/Engine compatibility and make only a targeted TLS change |
