Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTest a stream with a client that supports its protocol, then verify more than the initial connection: confirm the playlist or manifest loads where applicable, media segments arrive, playback starts, and the timeline keeps advancing. FFmpeg can test RTMP and RTSP connections; use an HLS-capable player such as the hls.js demo for HLS, and the DASH-IF dash.js player for DASH. A successful test proves only that the chosen client and environment could play that stream at that time.
What a useful stream test proves
A stream test is a sequence of checks, not a single green light. It can show whether a particular client, on a particular device and network, can reach and play the endpoint at the time of the test. It does not guarantee compatibility with every browser, device, network path, or production workload.
Track where the attempt stops: connection or authorization, playlist or manifest loading, segment retrieval, media initialization, or sustained playback. That distinction makes the result useful to whoever operates the origin or CDN.
Prepare the test
- Record the context. Note the protocol, full endpoint, time, client and version, operating system or browser, and any authentication requirements. Treat URLs containing credentials or tokens as secrets; remove them before sharing logs or screenshots.
- Choose a compatible client. Use FFmpeg for command-line RTMP or RTSP checks, an HLS-capable player for HLS, and dash.js for DASH. A browser failure may reflect unsupported media APIs or codecs rather than a broken stream.
- Test in stages. Check that the connection or entry resource succeeds, then verify that media can initialize and that playback time progresses. For HLS and DASH, a loaded playlist or manifest alone is not proof that playback works.
- Compare when the result is ambiguous. Try another compatible client or, if possible, another network. Report what each client did rather than inferring a cause from one failure.
Test RTMP with FFmpeg
FFmpeg documents RTMP and RTMPS support. Its documented RTMP URL form is rtmp://[username:password@]server[:port][/app][/instance][/playpath]. Confirm that the server, port, application, instance or play path, and authentication match the streaming server configuration. See the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.

Use FFmpeg as a protocol-aware client to attempt access and observe whether media can be read. Record connection or authentication errors separately from later decoding or playback errors: failure to connect happens before a successful media decode can be assessed. Avoid putting a credential-bearing URL in a public command transcript.
Test HLS playlists and playback
HLS begins with a playlist URI. RFC 8216 describes media playlists that reference media segments; a master playlist can describe variant streams at different bitrates, formats, or resolutions and alternate renditions. Check both the playlist and the media it points to. A playlist that loads while its segments fail is not a successful playback test. Read RFC 8216, HTTP Live Streaming (published August 2017).

For a browser-based check, paste the HLS URL into the hls.js demo. Its diagnostic views include playback, timeline, quality levels, errors, and real-time metrics. The hls.js API documentation and compatibility notes explain that the library playback path requires Media Source Extensions (MSE) support and supported media inputs; some Safari platforms can instead play HLS natively through the video element. Test the browser and player combination your audience uses, not just an arbitrary browser.
Test RTSP and note the transport
FFmpeg documents RTSP support with UDP and TCP-interleaved lower transports, as well as HTTP or HTTPS tunneling options for some use cases. A connection or playback attempt can therefore behave differently depending on transport. If comparing results, record which transport was used; trying TCP can help expose a transport or firewall difference, but does not identify the underlying fault by itself. Consult the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.

As with RTMP, distinguish inability to establish a session or discover media from a later decoding or playback problem. Preserve the relevant error text while redacting credentials and tokens.

Do not stop at a manifest load. Check that playback starts, the timeline advances, and there are no critical errors. DASH-IF’s functional test guidance describes assertions for playing state, progress, and critical errors, along with additional behaviors such as buffer cleanup, manifest updates, seeking, and audio switching.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Interpret the point of failure
| Observation | What to investigate |
|---|---|
| Connection or authorization fails | Check endpoint spelling, port and path, credentials, token expiry, access rules, and reachability. Separate authentication or connection errors from media errors. |
| HLS playlist or DASH manifest loads, but segments fail | Inspect referenced resource paths, permissions, HTTP responses, and whether the client can reach the segment URLs. |
| Resources load, but media will not initialize | Check supported container and codec combinations, player support, and playlist or manifest conformance. |
| Playback starts and then stalls | Check ongoing segment availability, playlist or manifest refresh, network consistency, and the player’s buffer and error information. |
| One browser fails while another works | Compare native playback with MSE playback, codec support, and browser-specific delivery constraints before changing the stream. |
| RTSP differs between UDP and TCP | Record the transport and compare the same endpoint and client conditions. The difference narrows the investigation but does not prove whether the source, firewall, or network is responsible. |
These are troubleshooting leads, not diagnoses of a specific endpoint. Use client errors and origin or CDN logs to establish what actually happened.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a YouTube live stream rather than to diagnose an RTMP, HLS, RTSP, or DASH endpoint, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the stream running in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not a camera-streaming or protocol-testing tool. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
