They do different jobs and can work together: RTSP may select RTP to carry the media, while RTSP handles session commands such as setup and playback control.
RTP and RTSP at a glance
| Question | RTP | RTSP |
|---|---|---|
| What does it do? | Transports real-time media data. The IETF standard is titled RTP: A Transport Protocol for Real-Time Applications (RFC 3550). | Sets up and controls delivery sessions for real-time data such as audio and video (RFC 7826). |
| What does it look like in use? | Carries media as part of a real-time application. | Uses client-server requests and responses, including session setup and playback operations such as SETUP, PLAY, and PAUSE. |
| How are they related? | Can carry media for an RTSP-controlled session. | Can select RTP as the media-delivery mechanism; it controls the session rather than serving as the media transport itself. |
What does RTP do?
RTP is the protocol associated with transporting real-time media. Its role is to carry media data in a real-time application; it is not the session remote control. RFC 3550 defines RTP as a transport protocol for real-time applications.
Do not assume from the name alone that RTP always uses UDP. The standards cited here establish RTP’s media-transport role, not a rule that every RTP deployment uses one particular underlying transport.
What does RTSP do?
RTSP is an application-layer protocol for setting up and controlling the delivery of real-time data. A client and server exchange requests and responses: the client establishes session context and issues controls, and the server delivers the described media streams. RTSP can provide operations such as SETUP, PLAY, and PAUSE.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
RFC 7826 describes RTSP 2.0 as a bidirectional request-and-response protocol that establishes context for media resources and then controls their delivery. A useful way to think of it is as a network remote control for a media server.
How do RTP and RTSP work together?
- Set up the session: the client uses RTSP requests to establish context and arrange delivery.
- Select a delivery mechanism: RTSP can select RTP for carrying the media.
- Control playback: the client can use RTSP operations such as PLAY or PAUSE.
- Carry the media: RTP transports the real-time media data when selected.
This distinction matters when diagnosing a system: session-control behavior and media delivery are separate functions, even when both are part of one viewing experience.

RTSP control transport is not the media transport
For RTSP 2.0, the RTSP messages use TCP or TLS over TCP. That describes the control-message connection; it does not mean the media must travel over that same connection or use the same delivery mechanism. RTSP separately selects how media is delivered, and RTP is one option.
So avoid saying simply that “RTSP streams the video.” More precisely, RTSP controls the session and may arrange for RTP to carry the media. Likewise, avoid treating RTP and RTSP as interchangeable protocols or claiming RTP must always use UDP.

RTSP 1.0 and RTSP 2.0 compatibility
RFC 7826 defines RTSP 2.0 and says it replaces RTSP 1.0. The standard also states that RTSP 2.0 is not backwards compatible with RTSP 1.0 except for basic version negotiation. That is a standards-level compatibility statement; it does not establish which version a particular camera, player, or server implements. Check the documentation for both endpoints before assuming they can communicate.
When the distinction is useful
- When reading a product specification: “RTSP support” usually points to session setup and control; determine separately what transport carries the media.
- When troubleshooting playback: a successful control exchange does not by itself prove that media packets are being delivered. Check session setup/control and media delivery as distinct parts of the path.
- When connecting clients and servers: verify protocol-version support as well as the selected media-delivery mechanism.
Keep a YouTube channel live with prerecorded video
RTP and RTSP describe real-time media transport and session control; they are not, by themselves, a way to keep a YouTube channel broadcasting prerecorded video around the clock. For that separate task, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos to YouTube, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on.
