Wowza documents separate Windows and Linux Azure quick-starts. The Windows guide provides a detailed setup path; for Linux, follow Wowza’s current guide rather than adapting Windows commands or file paths.
Choose a deployment and licensing route
Before creating a VM, decide whether to use an Azure Marketplace image with embedded Wowza licensing or bring your own license (BYOL). The appropriate choice depends on whether you already have a Wowza license and which current offer terms fit your deployment.
| Route | What the documented billing model says | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Marketplace image with embedded licensing | Wowza describes a combined Microsoft invoice for VM runtime, storage, bandwidth, and Wowza usage. Its pricing page describes paid Marketplace instances as provider-billed hourly and says no separate key is required for an embedded license. | You want the license and Azure infrastructure billed through the Marketplace offer. |
| BYOL | Azure bills VM runtime, storage, and bandwidth. A Wowza subscription may be invoiced separately by Wowza. | You already have an eligible Wowza license or prefer to manage licensing separately. |
Offer availability, included terms, and billing can change. Review the current Azure Marketplace listing and Wowza pricing before you commit; do not assume a particular offer name, plan, or price based on an older setup guide. Wowza’s Streaming Engine pricing information and Azure Marketplace are starting points.
Prepare the Azure deployment
Confirm access and operating system
- You need an Azure subscription and permission to create virtual machines, storage, and network security rules.
- Choose Windows or Linux based on your operating-system experience and administration tools. Wowza documents a setup path for each; the available evidence does not establish that one performs better in general.
- The Windows quick-start updated July 22, 2026 describes a Windows Server 2019 Datacenter image with Wowza Streaming Engine 4.11.3. The Linux quick-start updated the same date also identifies 4.11.3 for its latest preconfigured image. These are guide-specific version statements, not a guarantee that the same image or OS remains available: verify the live Marketplace offer before deployment.
Plan region, VM size, and network access
- Select a region with low latency to the camera or encoder that will send the live feed. This reduces the network distance on the ingest path; it does not by itself guarantee low viewer latency.
- Choose a VM size for your actual encoding, transcoding, and stream load. Wowza’s Windows guide explicitly warns against its A0 size for insufficient CPU resources, and gives D-series examples that should be treated as historical guidance, not a universal sizing rule. Check current Azure availability and size the workload you intend to run.
- Decide which ingest and playback protocols your encoders and viewers require before configuring inbound access. Add only the corresponding ports and protocols, restrict source addresses where practical, and manage them through the VM’s network security group. The Windows guide notes that UDP inbound rules may be needed when an encoder sends via UDP; do not open broad port ranges without a deployment-specific reason.
- Plan a secure management path. Avoid leaving the Manager interface broadly reachable from the public internet; restrict access to trusted IPs or a protected network and configure HTTPS for production.
Install with the Windows Azure Marketplace image
This is the detailed Windows sequence documented by Wowza. Marketplace labels and image availability can change, so select the current Wowza Streaming Engine offer in the Azure portal rather than relying on a remembered listing name.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- In the Azure portal, open Azure Marketplace and find the Wowza Streaming Engine image. Review the offer’s operating system, version, license model, and current billing terms.
- Start VM creation and choose or create a resource group. Enter a VM name, select the region, and choose a suitable VM size. The Wowza guide recommends locating the VM near the camera or encoder feeding it; do not select the guide’s warned-against A0 size.
- Configure the VM’s disk and network settings. Add inbound network security group rules only for the ingest, playback, and management traffic your setup needs. If an encoder sends streams over UDP, allow the required UDP traffic from the necessary source addresses rather than opening UDP indiscriminately.
- Review the selected license route and Azure estimate, then create the VM. Wait for provisioning to complete and note its public IP address for the initial connection and test.
- Connect to Windows using Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) and the administrator credentials established for the VM. Protect RDP access with appropriate source restrictions; do not expose administrative access to the whole internet if it can be avoided.
- Open
C:Program Files (x86)Wowza Media SystemsWowza Streaming Engineconfadmin.passwordand replace the initial Wowza Manager username and password with unique credentials. Do not leave default credentials on a publicly reachable management service. - Open Wowza Streaming Engine Manager at
http://[public-ip-address]:8088/enginemanagerfor initial setup, replacing the bracketed text with the VM’s public IP. For production, use HTTPS and restrict Manager access rather than leaving this HTTP endpoint exposed publicly. - Check license status in Manager. The Windows guide says a temporary license key is preloaded; if using BYOL, replace it with the applicable subscription or perpetual key. With an embedded-license Marketplace image, follow the offer’s instructions and verify that its license is active.
Install with the Linux Azure image
Wowza maintains a separate Linux-on-Azure quick-start, which documents SSH access and a preconfigured image. Its guide-specific latest-image statement is Wowza Streaming Engine 4.11.3, updated July 22, 2026; confirm the current image in Marketplace before creating the VM.
Use the Linux guide’s own current instructions for VM configuration, SSH access, license verification, and Manager setup. The Windows-specific admin.password path and RDP steps above do not apply to Linux, and exact Linux commands or file locations should not be inferred from them.

Test the server and confirm the public address
- In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, use the test stream and Test Players workflow described in the Windows guide to validate that the server can ingest and play a stream.
- Use the VM’s public IP address as the externally reachable server address. Confirm the selected ingest protocol and network security group rules match the encoder and player you are testing.
- If a test player displays a private IP instead of the public address, Wowza notes that Azure variable lookup can cause this behavior. Follow the guide’s documented property-setting remedy rather than changing unrelated network rules.
- After the test, verify playback from a client outside the VM and confirm that only intended ports and management sources remain allowed.
Stop, delete, and monitor costs
Stopping a VM and deleting it are different actions. A stopped VM may leave associated resources, such as disks or public IP allocations, in place, and charges can depend on the resource and current Azure terms. Deleting a VM does not necessarily remove every associated resource unless you select or delete them as well. Review the resources in the Azure portal and the current billing details before leaving a deployment idle or removing it. With BYOL, account separately for any Wowza subscription charges; with embedded licensing, verify how the selected Marketplace offer bills usage.
Common setup problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Cannot reach Manager on port 8088 | The VM is not fully provisioned, the address is wrong, or the network security group blocks access. | Confirm the VM is running, use its current public IP, and check the specific inbound rule. Restrict Manager access to trusted sources and use HTTPS for production. |
| Encoder cannot connect or send a stream | The required ingest protocol or port is not allowed, or the encoder is targeting the wrong address. | Check the encoder’s configured destination and protocol, then allow only the required traffic in the network security group. Add UDP only when the chosen ingest path requires it. |
| Test player shows a private address | Azure variable lookup may supply a private IP to the test player. | Use Wowza’s documented property-setting remedy in the Windows setup guide and retest with the public IP. |
| Manager login fails | Initial credentials may still be in use, or the configured username and password differ from the ones entered. | For Windows, check and securely update the documented admin.password file over RDP. Keep the management endpoint restricted while recovering access. |
| Performance is inadequate | VM CPU or network capacity may not suit the ingest and processing workload. | Review the current Azure VM size and workload requirements. The Windows guide specifically warns that A0 lacks enough CPU; its other size examples are not universal recommendations. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that needs uploaded videos looped as a 24/7 live stream, StreamNeo is a different, simpler option than administering a Wowza VM: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo runs the loop in its cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream; and the first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
