To play Wowza Streaming Engine media on a Chromecast, serve the stream—typically as HLS—and play it in a Cast-capable web player such as Wowza Flowplayer with its Chromecast plugin. The page hosting the player must use HTTPS, and the Chromecast receiver and the device sending playback must be on the same local network.
How the Wowza-to-Chromecast setup works
Wowza Streaming Engine serves the media; it does not by itself add a Cast button to a website. A Cast-capable player supplies that control and sends playback to the receiver. The practical path is therefore: make the stream playable from Wowza, load it in a compatible player, then cast from an HTTPS page.
Prepare a playable Wowza stream
Identify the playback URL
A Wowza playback URL is built from the protocol, server address, port, application, stream name, and playback path. Wowza gives this HLS example: http://example.com:1935/myApplication/myStream/playlist.m3u8. Replace the example host, application, and stream with your deployment’s values. For secure playback, Wowza says to use the SSL certificate hostname and port 443.
Before adding Cast, open the stream in a player that can handle its format and confirm the playlist and media load. If the stream is private or access-controlled, ensure the receiver can retrieve the playlist and every segment it references; successful playback on the sender alone does not prove the receiver can reach them.

Prefer HLS for this browser-player workflow
Wowza supports HLS delivery as segmented adaptive-bitrate streaming over HTTP. Its HLS packetizer documentation lists H.264 video and AAC-family audio support. That establishes Wowza-side format support, not universal compatibility: the selected player and the target Cast receiver must also support the stream’s codecs and segment format.
Add Chromecast support with Wowza Flowplayer
Wowza Flowplayer documents a Chromecast plugin that adds casting to videos. Its integration loads the Flowplayer core player and the Chromecast plugin, then configures the player’s chromecast namespace. Configuration includes a receiver application identifier and HLS audio/video segment-format fields. Use the plugin’s current documentation for the exact syntax and supported configuration options rather than copying code for a different player version.

The plugin documentation describes stable and canary receiver application options. It also allows a Google-registered custom Cast receiver application ID. A custom receiver can provide control over receiver behavior, but Wowza cautions that not all features may be available with a custom application.
Set up playback and cast
- Make the stream reachable. Use the deployment-specific Wowza HLS playback URL and verify that the playlist and its media segments can be fetched from the network the receiver will use.
- Load the player integration. Add Flowplayer core and its Chromecast plugin to the page, configure the
chromecastnamespace with the appropriate receiver application and HLS segment settings, and point the player at the Wowza stream. - Serve the page over HTTPS. Flowplayer says insecure pages do not show the Cast icon. Use an SSL-protected page; if the page is HTTPS, use secure playback as needed to avoid mixed HTTP/HTTPS content.
- Connect to the receiver. Power on the Chromecast receiver, keep it within range, and connect the sender device and receiver to the same local network.
- Cast from the player. When the Cast control appears, select the receiver and start playback. If casting connects but media does not play, check receiver access to the full playlist and all referenced segments, then check codec and segment-format compatibility.
Check the network ports used by the deployment
Wowza’s technical specifications list TCP port 80 for HLS and TCP port 443 for HTTPS/SSL-TLS streaming. Its playback documentation identifies port 1935 as the default streaming port and uses 443 for secure playback. Allow only the ports your deployment actually uses through the Engine host firewall, cloud security groups, and relevant network controls. A URL using a different configured port requires that port to be reachable too.

Troubleshoot missing controls or failed playback
The Cast icon does not appear
- Confirm the player page is HTTPS; Flowplayer says insecure websites do not display the Cast icon.
- Check that a receiver is powered on, in range, and on the same local network as the sender.
- Confirm the Chromecast plugin loaded and that the player integration is configured for the selected receiver application.
The icon appears, but casting fails or remains blank
- Test the complete HLS playlist and segment URLs from the receiver’s network. A working sender-side preview does not guarantee that the receiver can reach every URL.
- Check that the selected receiver and player support the stream’s codecs and segment format. Wowza’s HLS support for H.264 and AAC-family audio does not guarantee compatibility across every receiver.
- Check firewall and cloud-network rules for the actual playback port, including secure playback on 443 if used.
An HTTPS page cannot load the stream
Check for mixed content: an HTTPS page that requests media over HTTP may be blocked by the browser. Use secure playback with the SSL certificate hostname and port 443 where applicable, and confirm that the playlist’s segment URLs are also reachable over the intended secure route.
A custom receiver behaves differently
Verify the custom application ID and receiver-side behavior. Wowza Flowplayer permits a Google-registered custom receiver application, but warns that some features may not be available with one. If the issue is receiver-specific, compare against the documented stable or canary receiver options.
