To send vMix to Wowza Streaming Engine, choose Custom RTMP Server in vMix, enter Wowza’s application connection URL and the incoming stream name, provide Wowza source credentials if enabled, then verify the stream in Wowza Streaming Engine Manager. The URL points to the Wowza host, port and application; the stream name identifies the feed being published.
Before you configure vMix
You need a live application in Wowza Streaming Engine and its publishing details. Find the server host or IP address, the RTMP listening port, the application name and the incoming stream name. Wowza’s documented URL pattern is rtmp://[wowza-ip-address]:[port]/[application-name]. The default RTMP port is TCP 1935, but use the port configured for your Wowza virtual host rather than assuming the default. See Wowza’s RTMP encoder setup guide and publisher connection guide.
Have the source credentials ready
Wowza requires an RTMP source username and password by default, though authentication can be configured for the application. Use the source account associated with publishing—not viewer or playback credentials. Wowza’s official setup documentation describes this default requirement.
Configure and start the vMix stream
- Open Streaming settings. In vMix, open the Streaming window using the cog beside the Stream button.
- Select the destination. Choose Custom RTMP Server. vMix documents Wowza as a supported dedicated streaming server; see vMix Getting Started and vMix Streaming Settings.
- Enter the application URL. Put the Wowza connection URL in the URL field. It should contain the server host or IP, the actual RTMP port and the live application name, for example
rtmp://[wowza-ip-address]:[port]/[application-name]. Do not append the incoming stream name to this URL unless your particular Wowza configuration explicitly calls for it. - Enter the stream name. Put the Wowza incoming stream name in vMix’s Stream Key field. The label “stream key” in vMix refers here to the publishing stream name configured for the Wowza application.
- Set credentials and encoding. Supply the source username and password when source authentication is enabled. Select a quality profile appropriate to your production, uplink and receiving application; see the encoding guidance below.
- Start streaming. Start the stream in vMix and check the status in both applications.
Choose encoding settings that fit the receiving workflow
vMix exposes resolution, video bitrate, audio bitrate, codec, audio format, keyframe frequency and other advanced options. There is no single bitrate that is correct for every vMix-to-Wowza setup: select a profile that suits the produced video, the available upload bandwidth and the receiving application’s requirements.

Confirm that Wowza is receiving the stream
- In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, open the live application’s Incoming Streams view.
- Find the published stream and check that its status is Active. The stream detail view provides uptime and network-throughput information.
- Use Wowza’s Test Playback to check delivery beyond the publishing connection.
- In vMix, open View Status for technical information about the encoder-side stream.

Troubleshoot a failed or inactive connection
- vMix cannot connect: Check that the URL has the correct host, port and application name. Confirm the Wowza server is listening on that port and that TCP traffic to it is permitted across the network path.
- Wowza does not show the expected incoming stream: Confirm the stream name in vMix’s Stream Key field matches the application’s incoming stream name.
- Authentication fails: Verify the source username and password for the application. Do not substitute playback or viewer credentials.
- The stream is connected but playback does not work: Compare vMix’s View Status information with the Wowza stream’s status and use Wowza Test Playback to distinguish publishing from delivery issues.
- The stream is unstable or the output is unsuitable: Review resolution, video and audio bitrates, codec, audio format and keyframe frequency against the available uplink and receiving application’s requirements. Do not assume one bitrate fits every installation.
