A codec compresses and decodes video; a streaming protocol is the route that carries it to a platform. For YouTube Live, the right choice depends on the ingest protocol: Google lists H.264 for RTMP and RTMPS, H.264 and HEVC for HLS, and H.264 and VP9 for DASH. Those are YouTube-specific compatibility options, not a universal ranking of codecs.
Codec vs. protocol: what each one does
A video codec describes how video is encoded into a compressed stream and decoded for playback. H.264, HEVC (also called H.265), and VP9 are codec names. A protocol is the delivery or ingest method used to send a stream to a service. The protocol matters because a platform can accept different codecs over different ingest routes.
Codec names and codec identifiers in a manifest are related but not interchangeable. The IETF HLS specification, for example, uses a CODECS attribute to signal formats; its example mp4a.40.2,avc1.4d401e identifies AAC-LC audio and H.264 Main Profile Level 3.0 video.
YouTube Live codec support depends on the ingest protocol
Google’s YouTube comparison lists the following combinations. Use it as YouTube guidance, not as a compatibility chart for other services.

| YouTube ingest protocol | Listed video codecs | Encryption and latency notes | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTMP | H.264 | Unencrypted; suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency. | When H.264 is supported by your encoder and the documented latency options fit your stream. |
| RTMPS | H.264 | Encrypted; suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency. Google describes it as the secure extension of RTMP. | When you want the RTMP route with encryption and H.264. |
| HLS | H.264, HEVC | Encrypted; supports HDR, but is not suited to ultra-low latency. | When the HLS format constraints are supported by your encoder and its relatively higher latency is acceptable. |
| DASH | H.264, VP9 | Encrypted; not suited to ultra-low latency. | When the YouTube DASH route and VP9 are supported by your setup and the latency trade-off works. |
The protocol options and latency descriptions above come from Google’s YouTube comparison. Do not assume that the same codecs or rules apply to another platform: confirm that destination’s current ingest requirements.
How to choose a codec and ingest route
- Start with the destination. Check the platform’s current requirements for the exact ingest protocol you plan to use. A codec appearing in one protocol’s support list does not mean it is accepted over every route.
- Set your latency goal. For YouTube, Google lists RTMP and RTMPS as suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency. HLS and DASH are not suited to ultra-low latency; segment-based delivery typically incurs greater latency.
- Match the stream’s quality goals to supported formats. For YouTube, HLS supports H.264 or HEVC and HDR; DASH lists H.264 or VP9. These options matter only if your encoder and chosen delivery workflow support them.
- Check the actual encoder implementation. Confirm that your software or hardware encoder can produce the selected codec and required settings. Hardware acceleration, encoding load, and compatibility vary by implementation; the codec name alone does not tell you how a particular encoder will perform.
- Check the receiving playback chain. Consider the devices and players your audience uses, and verify support for the selected format where it matters. The YouTube protocol table does not establish codec support across all devices.
There is no evidence here for a universal winner in visual quality, compression efficiency, processing cost, or device compatibility. Avoid choosing HEVC or VP9 on the assumption that either will always look better or use less bandwidth than H.264 in every live workflow.

YouTube HLS: format constraints to check
Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API HLS guide describes HLS as a good choice for premium content that requires high quality and high resolution at relatively higher latency. The requirements below are specific to YouTube HLS ingest, not general HLS rules for every service.
- Container and audio: mux audio and video in M2TS. The supported audio format is single-track AAC.
- Video and frame rate: use H.264 or HEVC, at up to 60 fps.
- GOP structure: use a closed GOP.
- HDR: YouTube HLS supports HDR with HEVC. Google’s guide specifies 10-bit PQ or HLG and Rec. 2020 color requirements, including primaries and matrix details. Check the guide’s exact color settings when configuring HDR rather than relying on the label alone.
- Segment duration: Google recommends segments of one to four seconds, with a five-second maximum. Shorter segments can reduce latency, but may increase rebuffer risk and reduce encoding efficiency.
These segment settings are an HLS trade-off, not evidence that one codec is better than another. If your encoder exposes HLS muxing, segment, or color controls, match them to Google’s current guide.

What to verify when a codec option is missing or rejected
- The route may not accept it: compare your selected YouTube protocol with the support matrix. For example, VP9 appears in the DASH row, not the RTMP or RTMPS rows.
- The encoder may not offer that format: verify codec support in the specific software or hardware encoder you are using. Support can differ between implementations; do not infer it from a codec’s name.
- An HLS setting may be incompatible: check M2TS muxing, single-track AAC audio, closed GOP, the frame-rate limit, and HDR color settings where applicable.
- The route may not meet your latency target: HLS and DASH are not YouTube’s ultra-low-latency choices in the comparison. Consider the RTMP or RTMPS route if its H.264 support and other settings fit.
- The issue may be downstream: confirm that the intended playback devices and software can handle the chosen format; platform ingest acceptance alone does not guarantee every viewer’s playback chain will.
