WebRTC live streaming is real-time audio or video exchanged between browsers or other compatible endpoints using a set of browser APIs and network protocols. An application supplies media, negotiates a connection through signaling, and uses ICE to find a route; the media then travels securely, either directly between endpoints or through a relay or forwarding server.
What is WebRTC live streaming?
WebRTC is not one hosted streaming service or a single protocol. It is a coordinated set of browser-facing APIs and transport protocols for exchanging audio, video, and application data in real time. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) describes its role this way: “The WebRTC 1.0 specification exposes an API to control protocols (defined within the IETF) necessary to establish real-time audio, video and data exchange.” W3C WebRTC Recommendation.
The W3C specifies the browser APIs for working with media and connections; the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) specifies transport and related protocols. In a typical video call, an app obtains camera and microphone tracks, attaches them to a connection, and coordinates the setup with the other endpoint. The same mechanisms can support other real-time video applications, but the architecture and user experience depend on the application.
How does real-time video work?
- Get or select media. An app may capture a camera and microphone or select another source. The WebRTC API works with media represented as
MediaStreamTrackobjects. - Add tracks to a connection. The app attaches the tracks to an
RTCPeerConnection, the browser object responsible for managing sending and receiving media. - Exchange connection descriptions. The endpoints create and exchange descriptions of the media and connection negotiation. They need a way to pass these messages to each other, but WebRTC does not prescribe the signaling transport.
- Find a network route with ICE. Each endpoint gathers possible connection routes, called candidates, and exchanges them through signaling. ICE tests compatible routes to find a usable candidate pair.
- Send media over the selected route. Once a route works, media flows using secure RTP. DTLS-SRTP handles key exchange for the secure media transport, as specified in IETF RFC 8835.
The connection process can respond to changes in stream settings or network conditions. That does not imply a universal latency or quality: outcomes depend on the application, route, infrastructure, and the endpoints’ network conditions.

Signaling, ICE, STUN, and TURN: what each part does
Signaling coordinates setup
Signaling carries the negotiation messages—such as offers, answers, and ICE candidates—between endpoints. The application chooses how to exchange them. A signaling server can route messages without interpreting their contents; WebSocket is one possible transport, not a WebRTC requirement. MDN’s signaling guide describes the exchange.
ICE searches for a working path
ICE evaluates candidate routes and checks whether the endpoints can communicate over them. A direct path may work, but direct connectivity is not guaranteed.

STUN helps with address discovery
STUN helps an endpoint discover network-facing address information and restrictions relevant to connectivity. It assists ICE in testing routes; it does not itself carry the call’s media.
TURN relays when direct connectivity fails
If the endpoints cannot establish a viable direct route, ICE can use a TURN relay. The media then passes through that relay rather than travelling directly between the endpoints. Relay use is a valid WebRTC path, not evidence that WebRTC has failed. See MDN’s WebRTC protocols overview.

How multi-person WebRTC calls are delivered
A direct peer connection is well suited to exchanging media between a small number of endpoints. In a mesh arrangement, each participant may need to send a separate stream to each other participant; the amount of sender-side work and recipient fan-out grows as more people join. There is no universal participant count at which mesh stops working: that depends on the product, network, and media requirements.
Direct peer delivery
With direct delivery, endpoints exchange media with one another where network conditions permit. The application still needs signaling, and ICE may select a TURN relay if direct connectivity is unavailable.

SFU-mediated delivery
For multi-party calls, an application may use a Selective Forwarding Unit (SFU). An SFU receives participant streams and forwards them to recipients, rather than requiring each sender to distribute a separate stream directly to every other participant. This is an architecture choice, not a requirement for every WebRTC connection. It adds an intermediary to operate and should be evaluated alongside signaling and TURN needs. The trade-offs are qualitative; no single participant threshold or universal bandwidth, cost, or latency advantage applies to every deployment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What WebRTC does—and does not—guarantee
- It provides APIs and protocols, not a complete hosted calling product. An application must supply the surrounding service and connection coordination.
- Signaling is outside the core WebRTC API. Applications choose how endpoints exchange negotiation messages.
- Media is not guaranteed to travel directly. ICE may choose a TURN relay, and a multi-party service may put an SFU in the media path.
- It does not promise a fixed latency, quality, or participant capacity. Those results depend on deployment and network conditions; the specifications do not establish a universal figure.
WebRTC for a live stream versus a 24/7 YouTube channel
WebRTC is designed for real-time exchange between connected endpoints. Keeping a prerecorded video running continuously on a YouTube channel is a different task: it requires sending an ongoing stream to YouTube, rather than setting up a real-time exchange between browsers. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube; it is not a WebRTC calling service and does not stream to other platforms.
