For a first deployment, use Wowza Streaming Engine’s Linux Amazon EC2 Marketplace AMI: choose the architecture and licensing option that fit your account, launch it with an appropriate security group and EC2 key pair, then verify the server and a sample video. Wowza’s Linux EC2 guide, updated July 22, 2026, documents this route for x86 and ARM64 images. This walkthrough follows that Linux AMI path; if you need Windows, use Wowza’s corresponding Windows AMI guidance and confirm the image is currently available in your region.
Choose the AMI, license, and instance before launch
Wowza’s Marketplace route provides Linux images for x86 and ARM64, with BYOL and paid variants. The current subscription names and availability can change, so check the live Marketplace listing before you launch. Wowza says its current subscriptions replace older AWS Marketplace BYOL and Standard subscriptions; legacy subscriptions may continue until canceled in your AWS account. See Wowza’s Linux EC2 deployment guide for the current launch flow and options.
| Choice | What it means | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| BYOL AMI | Provide a valid Wowza license key in EC2 user data as documented, or activate after launch using the appropriate flow. | Have a valid key ready. If the key is missing, the server may start with a temporary license that must be replaced. |
| Paid AMI | The license is embedded in the image and cannot be changed. | Wowza says paid Linux AMIs always use the default startup package. |
| x86 or ARM64 | These are the processor architecture options described for the Linux Marketplace AMIs. | Choose an instance type compatible with the image architecture and your workload. |
| Default or custom startup package | The default package configures the live, vod, and vods3 applications. A custom package replaces it. |
Use a custom package only if you can supply all the application configuration files you need. |
Size for the workload, not a generic recommendation
There is no universal best EC2 instance size in Wowza’s reviewed installation guidance. The right choice depends on audience size, ingest format, transcoding, concurrent work, and egress requirements. Estimate those needs, then check current AWS charges for the selected instance, storage, and network use. Wowza specifically cautions against CPU-credit instance types—its example is a Tx instance—because Wowza Streaming Engine could stop if credits run out.
Choose a region near the stream source or audience when latency matters. Wowza notes that instances in multiple regions can provide redundancy, but that adds deployment and operating complexity. This guide does not prescribe a multi-region design or a universal cost estimate.

Prepare the launch settings
Configure a security group
Create or select a security group for the protocols and management access you actually need. Wowza gives TCP 1935 for RTMP and TCP 8086–8088 for Wowza Streaming Engine Manager as example openings. These are examples, not a complete rule set for every protocol or deployment; Wowza points to additional rules for other protocols and management in its EC2 guide.
- For production, restrict Manager access to trusted administrator addresses where possible. Do not treat an “Anywhere” source in an example rule as a general security recommendation.
- Expose only the media protocols your ingest and playback workflow needs. Add other protocol-specific rules only when required.
- The initial Manager URL documented by Wowza uses plain HTTP. Apply an appropriate network boundary and use HTTPS where your deployment requires it.
Choose an EC2 key pair
Select an EC2 key pair during launch. Wowza identifies it as the means to connect to the instance over SSH. Keep the private key protected and available to the administrator who will perform server-level troubleshooting.

Set BYOL user data, if applicable
For a BYOL launch, Wowza documents this user-data setting for the license key:
WZA_wowzaServerLicenseKey=[license-key]
Replace [license-key] with your valid key. Additional feature keys can be pipe-separated. Do not use this setting as a substitute for checking activation after launch; a missing or invalid key may leave a temporary license in place.

Launch the Wowza Linux EC2 instance
- In AWS Marketplace, locate the Wowza Streaming Engine Linux AMI and confirm its current region availability, architecture, and licensing terms.
- Choose BYOL or the paid AMI, then select an instance type compatible with the image and sized for your expected ingest, playback, transcoding, concurrency, and egress workload.
- Choose the EC2 region, configure the security group for required media and management traffic, and select an EC2 key pair for SSH access.
- If you are using BYOL, enter the license-key user-data setting. If using a custom startup package, provide its user data as described below. The paid Linux AMI uses its embedded license and default startup package.
- Review the launch settings and current AWS charges, then launch the instance.
- After it starts, note its instance identifier and public DNS name or hostname. Use that address for remote Manager, SSH, and streaming access. If you need a persistent public address that can be reassigned, Wowza notes that you can associate an Elastic IP.
Use a custom startup package only when you need one
A startup package is a compressed bundle containing startup.xml, configuration files, and scripts. It is passed at launch through user data. Without a custom package, the default package configures the live, vod, and vods3 applications. A custom package replaces the default; it must therefore include every application configuration you intend to use, rather than assuming the default applications will remain.
Wowza documents two ways to provide a package. The “As file” upload route is limited to 16 KB. The “As text” route can reference a full package URL with WZA_startupPackageURL. Consult Wowza’s startup package instructions for the exact user-data format and package requirements.

If startup configuration fails, inspect /usr/local/WowzaStreamingEngine/logs/wowzastreamingengine_startup.log. Check that the package can be fetched, that its contents include the required files, and that a custom package contains all the application configurations you expect.
Verify the server and play a sample video
- Check the server response. Open
http://[wowza-ip-address]:1935/ServerVersion, replacing the bracketed value with the instance’s public IP address. Wowza’s general installation guide says a successful response displays the Wowza Streaming Engine version. - Sign in to Manager. Open
http://[wowza-ip-address]:8088/enginemanager. Sign in with the case-sensitive Manager administrator credentials configured for the account. - Create a VOD application. In Manager, create a VOD application and use it to test content delivery.
- Play the installed sample. Test playback of
sample.mp4. Successful playback demonstrates that the basic server can serve VOD content.
These checks validate basic server response, Manager access, and VOD playback; they do not by themselves prove that a production ingest, transcoding profile, audience load, or every required media protocol is configured correctly. For the general installation and validation workflow, see Wowza’s install and configure guide, updated July 24, 2026.

Troubleshoot common first-deployment failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
/ServerVersion does not return the WSE version |
The instance may not be reachable on TCP 1935, or the server may not have completed startup. | Confirm the instance address and that the security group allows the required TCP 1935 access. Check the startup log if the server is not ready. |
| Manager does not load at port 8088 | Manager access may be blocked by the security group, or the URL, address, or credentials may be wrong. | Check TCP 8086–8088 rules as applicable, use /enginemanager on port 8088, and enter the configured credentials with the correct case. Keep Manager restricted to trusted administrator addresses. |
| BYOL does not activate as expected | The key may be missing, invalid, or improperly passed in user data. | Verify the WZA_wowzaServerLicenseKey value and complete activation through the appropriate flow; replace any temporary license. |
| Expected applications are absent after launch | A custom startup package replaced the default package and did not include all needed application configuration. | Review the package contents and startup log. Include every application configuration you require; the default package otherwise configures live, vod, and vods3. |
| Custom package is rejected or incomplete | The package may exceed the “As file” upload limit or be inaccessible from the URL-based route. | Keep an “As file” upload within the documented 16 KB limit, or use “As text” with WZA_startupPackageURL to reference the full package. Verify the package URL and required files. |
| Server stops under sustained work | A CPU-credit instance may have exhausted its credits. | Review the instance choice and workload. Wowza warns that WSE could stop when credits are exhausted on CPU-credit types; choose an appropriate non-credit-dependent option if the workload requires sustained CPU. |
| Sample VOD playback works but a live workflow does not | The VOD smoke test does not validate ingest protocols, stream configuration, or workload capacity. | Check the ingest protocol’s required security-group rules and the live application configuration, then validate with the actual source and expected load. |
Optional: S3 integration
S3 authorization is an adjacent integration, not a prerequisite for installing and validating Wowza Streaming Engine on EC2. If your deployment needs it, use Wowza’s guide to S3 authorization with EC2 instances rather than adding S3 permissions to a basic installation without a use case.
