A working setup needs a camera or encoder that publishes a stitched 360 feed, a Wowza live application configured for delivery, and a separate player that supports both the chosen format and 360 playback.
How the 360-degree workflow fits together
Think of the setup as three linked jobs: capture and stitch the scene, transport and package the video, then render it for the viewer. Wowza handles the middle job. It can ingest supported video and deliver it as HLS, but the player must interpret the equirectangular image as a sphere so viewers can look around. A standard HLS player may instead show the entire flattened image as a rectangle.
Wowza’s worked 360 example uses a camera publishing RTMP to a live application in Streaming Engine, with HLS used for playback. The example was published in November 2020 and used an Insta360 Pro 2 and a separate VR-capable player; treat those device and interface details as historical rather than current recommendations. In that demonstration, Wowza’s own test players did not render the stream in 360 mode. Presenter Justin Miller said, “I can’t really look at VR360 video through our test players,” referring to those test tools in that demonstration.
What you need before configuring Wowza
- A 360 camera and publishing path: The camera or its control software must stitch the capture into a 360 projection and publish a format accepted by your Engine application. Check current camera firmware and its output codec, resolution, frame rate, projection, and publishing protocol.
- A Wowza Streaming Engine server: The current Engine specification lists H.264 as supported RTMP video input and HLS as a supported delivery format. Its documented port list includes TCP 1935 for RTMP and TCP 80/443 for HTTP/HTTPS streaming. Those protocol-support facts do not establish that every camera, resolution, or player combination will work.
- A 360-capable player: Confirm that it accepts your delivery format, such as HLS, and can display the camera’s projection as an interactive sphere on the intended devices. The 2020 walkthrough used Field Player as an example, not as a current endorsement.
- A network path between camera, server, and viewers: A private or local address is usable only from the relevant local network. Remote publishing and playback require reachable addresses and appropriate firewall rules.
- Credentials and a test window: RTMP- and RTSP-based encoders must provide source credentials by default according to Wowza. Arrange credentials securely and test the complete path before the event.
Configure and test the RTMP-to-HLS workflow
- Prepare the camera output. Set the camera or its control software to produce a stitched 360 feed in a codec and format accepted by the planned Engine application. Wowza’s documented example used an Insta360 Pro 2 publishing RTMP; that November 2020 example does not verify current model availability or compatibility. Confirm the present camera’s output settings and the target player’s requirements.
- Create a live application in Wowza Streaming Engine. Configure a live application and enable HLS playback if HLS is the intended input for the viewer’s player. Use the application’s current Engine instructions to obtain the server host, RTMP port, application name, and stream name required by your encoder.
- Keep source authentication enabled. Supply the RTMP source credentials to the camera or encoder. The 2020 tutorial temporarily allowed unauthenticated RTMP sources for a local-network demonstration; that is not a production security recommendation. Do not expose an open publishing endpoint to the public internet.
- Set the publishing destination in the camera or encoder. Enter the reachable Wowza host, RTMP port, application, stream name, and source credentials. The walkthrough used port 1935 and a chosen stream name, but use the endpoint and values for your own application. Confirm that the camera is publishing and that the source appears in Engine’s live-source view.
- Get the HLS playback URL from Engine. Use the playback URL generated for the active stream. Open it in a player that supports HLS and has a 360 or spherical display mode. The 2020 walkthrough copied the HLS URL into an external VR-capable player because the Wowza test players shown there could not render the video as 360.
- Enable spherical or 360 display in the player. Configure the player for the projection produced by the camera, then check orientation and whether viewers can look around as intended. A successful HLS connection alone proves transport, not spherical rendering.
- Test from the actual viewer network and devices. Check the full camera-to-server-to-player path on the networks and devices viewers will use. Inspect stitching, projection, orientation, audio synchronization, buffering, image quality, and end-to-end delay. A local test can miss firewall, routing, or bandwidth issues that appear remotely.
Choose settings around the whole chain
Resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
Choose camera resolution and frame rate based on the camera’s current capabilities, the player’s compatibility, available upstream bandwidth, and the server’s capacity. A 360 image spreads detail across a wide sphere, so an acceptable-looking flattened preview does not guarantee a useful view when a viewer looks in one direction. Test the actual player experience at the expected viewing quality.

Set a bitrate the camera’s connection can sustain and that the server and delivery path can carry. The 2020 Wowza walkthrough showed a single high-resolution stream, not a universal bitrate or performance guarantee. Its presenter also noted that the example did not use adaptive bitrate. Do not treat its configuration or reported delay as a recommended value for other cameras, networks, or audiences.
Adaptive bitrate
If viewers need multiple quality levels, Wowza documents a transcoder workflow for creating aligned renditions. Validate the resulting renditions in the specific 360 player: the available documentation does not establish that arbitrary transcoding and player combinations preserve the projection or spherical metadata used by a particular camera. Test every rendition and switching behavior before relying on adaptive playback.

Latency and protocol choice
The historical walkthrough enabled a low-latency HLS setting and reported a 10–15-second delay in that particular demonstration. It was a configuration-specific local example, not a general latency promise. If your target is browser-based real-time delivery, Wowza also documents WebRTC and protocol bridging between WebRTC and HLS. Its current WebRTC guide says, “Encryption is mandatory for WebRTC, so you must configure TLS before streaming.” That documentation does not establish a turnkey WebRTC workflow for spherical 360 playback; verify camera, server, and player support together.
Networking, security, and capacity
Wowza’s current specification lists TCP 1935 for RTMP and TCP 80/443 for HTTP/HTTPS streaming. Open only the ports needed for your selected workflow, and verify that routing and firewall rules allow the camera to reach Engine and viewers to reach the playback endpoint. A private server address suitable for a local test will not be reachable by remote viewers without appropriate network configuration.

For capacity planning, Wowza’s updated 2026 specification recommends, for high-load production, a six-core 3.00 GHz-or-better CPU, 16–32 GB RAM, SATA SSD, and 10 Gbps Ethernet. Its minimum-production recommendation is a single quad-core 3.00 GHz-or-better CPU, 4 GB RAM, SATA HDD, and 1 Gbps Ethernet. These are vendor deployment recommendations, not 360-specific benchmarks or requirements for every stream. Actual capacity depends on the number of streams, their formats and bitrates, transcoding, and audience delivery path.

Wowza documents RTMP Stream Targets for forwarding streams to third-party destinations. Configure the destination and confirm that it accepts the stream before relying on this route. If you send multiple adaptive-bitrate renditions, the destination needs corresponding streams and targets. Separately verify that the platform and its player recognize the 360 projection and any required metadata; RTMP delivery alone does not establish a correct 360 viewing experience.

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No stream appears in Wowza’s live sources | Incorrect host, port, application, stream name, credentials, or network route | Compare the encoder destination with the live application settings, verify source authentication, confirm TCP 1935 reachability where RTMP is used, and check firewall or routing rules. |
| The player connects but shows a flat rectangle | The player is treating the equirectangular image as ordinary video | Use a player with 360/spherical support and enable the appropriate display mode; verify the camera projection matches the player’s setting. |
| HLS URL works in one player but not the intended device | Format or device compatibility differs | Test HLS support and spherical playback on the actual browsers, headsets, and devices planned for viewers. |
| Image buffers or drops quality | Bitrate exceeds available network capacity, or delivery and rendition setup is unsuitable | Measure the camera uplink and viewer path under realistic conditions, adjust the camera output, and test each transcoded rendition if adaptive bitrate is used. |
| Image is distorted, incorrectly oriented, or not fully interactive | Projection, stitching, orientation, or player configuration mismatch | Check the camera’s stitched output and projection settings, then configure and verify the corresponding mode in the target player. |
| Audio is out of sync or the stream has unexpected delay | Capture, encoding, network, packaging, or player buffering behavior | Test the complete chain and compare on the target network and player. The delay reported in the 2020 local demonstration is not a general benchmark. |
| WebRTC setup does not establish a secure connection | TLS is not configured | Configure TLS before streaming with WebRTC, as required by Wowza’s current guide. |
