To forward a live stream, either send a separate output from your streaming software to each platform, or send one feed to a cloud relay that distributes it. Direct outputs offer more local control but need enough computer capacity and upload bandwidth for the combined streams. A relay reduces the load on your computer and simplifies distribution. Before going live, prepare each destination, check its rules and limits, and test the complete setup.
What forwarding a live stream means
Forwarding a live stream means sending the same live content to another service—often to multiple services at once. This is commonly called simulcasting or multistreaming; YouTube uses the term “simulstreaming.” YouTube Help says, “You can go live with the same content across multiple platforms at the same time.” (YouTube Help: Stream across platforms)
The main choice is whether your local encoder sends a separate stream to each destination or sends one stream to a relay for distribution.
Choose how to send the stream
Send separate outputs from your computer
Configure your streaming software or hardware to send an output to each platform. This keeps the routing under your control, but your setup must encode the outputs and upload them all. YouTube describes local encoding as a suitable option for creators who want control and have a powerful computer; that is guidance, not a guarantee that any particular computer or connection can handle a given number of outputs.

Send one feed through a cloud relay
Connect your destinations to a cloud service, send one incoming feed from your encoder, and enable the outputs you want. The relay distributes that feed to the selected services. YouTube characterizes cloud service encoders as a simpler, lighter-on-the-computer option, especially when streaming to more than two channels; actual features and limits depend on the service. Cloudflare Stream, for example, documents RTMP outputs that can be added, enabled, disabled, or removed through its dashboard or API. It documents up to 50 concurrent destinations for one live input; that is a Cloudflare Stream capability, not a general simulcasting limit. (Cloudflare Stream simulcasting documentation)
Compare the practical trade-offs
| Consideration | Direct outputs | Cloud relay |
|---|---|---|
| Upload bandwidth | Plan for the combined target bitrates of all outputs. | Your encoder sends one incoming feed to the relay; the relay distributes it. |
| Computer workload | Depends on the number and configuration of local outputs. | Distribution is handled by the relay, reducing local work. |
| Control and setup | More direct control, with destination details configured in the encoder. | Connect destinations and enable outputs in the relay. |
| Destination count | Depends on the local setup and its capacity. | Depends on the service and plan. Cloudflare Stream documents up to 50 concurrent destinations for one live input. |
Choose based on your available upload bandwidth, computer capacity, number of destinations, preferred level of control, relay plan limits, and the rules of each receiving platform.

Prepare your accounts and stream details
- Confirm that each destination account is active and in good standing. Check its current live-streaming requirements and any relevant exclusivity or simulcasting terms.
- Find the destination’s stream key and RTMP server URL if your encoder or relay requires them. Treat stream keys as credentials: do not publish or share them.
- For YouTube, the channel must be verified and live streaming enabled. YouTube says initial activation can take at least 24 hours after the first request, so do not leave it until event time. See YouTube’s guidance.
- If using a relay, connect the destination accounts, create or select the intended live events, and enable the outputs before starting the encoder.
Set up a direct multi-output stream
- Choose the platforms and events. Create the live events or broadcasts on each destination as required. Make sure you are using the event’s current stream credentials, not an old key or a different scheduled event.
- Configure each output. In your encoder or streaming hardware, enter the correct ingest server and stream key for every destination. The exact menu names vary by encoder; use the destination’s current instructions for its server details and supported settings.
- Check upload capacity. Add together the target bitrates for the outputs. YouTube Help recommends upload speed of 1.5 to 2 times the combined target bitrate for stability. Its example adds two streams at 6 Mbps and 4 Mbps for a 10 Mbps total, then recommends 15–20 Mbps upload, particularly on a shared connection. This is YouTube’s setup guidance, accessed in 2026—not an independently measured universal threshold. (YouTube Help)
- Run a realistic test. Test with representative camera motion, audio, and graphics. YouTube advises using a speed test that reflects typical video and audio activity rather than relying only on a nominal connection figure.
- Start and verify every destination. Start the encoder, then confirm that the live broadcast appears at each service. During a YouTube broadcast, watch the Stream health tab in Live Control Room for warnings or delivery problems.
Set up a cloud relay
- Connect destination accounts. In the relay service, authorize the channels or enter the required destination credentials. Confirm that the correct accounts are connected.
- Create or select the live events. Select the intended events or destinations and enable each output you want to receive the feed.
- Send the encoder feed to the relay. Set the encoder’s service to the relay if it is listed, or enter the relay’s server URL and stream key. For an OBS plus Restream setup, Restream’s guide describes connecting destination channels in Restream, selecting Restream as OBS’s streaming service or pasting the relay stream key, and then starting the OBS stream. Restream Studio in a browser is another option if you do not need OBS. Check the guide for its current supported platforms and limits. (Restream setup guide)
- Start the feed and check outputs. Start streaming from the encoder, then verify that each selected destination is receiving the broadcast. Monitor the platform-side stream-health indicators as well as the relay dashboard.
Check platform rules before simulcasting
Each receiving service can set its own terms. Twitch’s Terms of Service section 11 and its simulcasting guidance describe conditions for simulcasting, including that the Twitch audience experience must not be worse than on other services, creators must not direct Twitch viewers to leave for a concurrent stream elsewhere, and activity from other platforms must not be combined and shown on the Twitch stream in the prohibited ways. Twitch’s policy pages can change, and the full FAQ text may not always be accessible; check the current terms and FAQ before relying on a particular interpretation. Also review any separate exclusivity agreement that applies to you. (Twitch Terms of Service; Twitch Simulcasting Guidelines FAQ)
Plan limits change too. Restream’s guide currently says its free plan supports Facebook profiles and YouTube, permits two channels at once, and requires Standard for Facebook Pages and Groups. These are Restream-reported plan details, not permanent platform-wide rules; check the current plan information before choosing a workflow. (Restream setup guide)

Troubleshoot common forwarding problems
- One destination is offline while others work: Check that the destination output is enabled, the correct event is selected, and its stream key and server URL match that event. Reauthorize the destination account if the relay reports a connection issue.
- All outputs are unstable on a direct setup: Compare the combined target bitrates with available upload capacity. If the connection is shared or variable, reduce the combined load, improve the connection, or test a cloud relay workflow.
- The computer struggles during a direct multi-output broadcast: Check encoder workload and the number of local outputs. A relay can handle distribution from one incoming feed, reducing the work done locally.
- YouTube does not accept the stream: Confirm live streaming is enabled on the verified channel, allow for the initial activation period, and check that you used the correct current stream key and event.
- The stream is live but quality or delivery is poor: Test again with realistic motion, audio, and graphics; inspect YouTube’s Stream health tab and the receiving platforms’ status indicators. A speed-test result alone may not reflect the load of an actual broadcast.
- A destination rejects or limits the broadcast: Check that the account is in good standing, review the service’s current live-streaming terms, and verify that your relay plan supports that destination and channel type.
