Use Streamlabs Console if you play on Xbox and want to configure a Streamlabs broadcast in a browser without a separate streaming PC or capture card. Console is Xbox-specific in Streamlabs’ FAQ; it is not the same workflow as a general-purpose desktop app.
How the two Streamlabs options differ
The choice is mainly about where the stream is produced. Desktop is software installed on a computer: it can combine game or desktop capture with a camera, microphone, scenes, overlays, alerts, chat, recording and audio filters. Console is a browser-configured service for broadcasting Xbox gameplay through the Xbox Twitch app. It offers scenes and selected widgets, but a narrower production and microphone workflow. Streamlabs’ comparison presents Desktop as available for Windows and Mac, while its Console FAQ describes Console as Xbox-only. Streamlabs’ comparison and Console FAQ explain the respective workflows.
| Question | Streamlabs Desktop | Streamlabs Console |
|---|---|---|
| Where does it run? | Windows or Mac computer. | Configured in a browser for Xbox streaming. |
| What production controls are documented? | Sources, scenes, overlays, alerts, widgets, chat, recording and audio filters. | Scenes, selected widgets, overlays and alerts; the FAQ lists Chat Box, Event List and Stream Labels. |
| Is a streaming PC or capture card needed? | A PC is needed; capturing a console into Desktop may require a capture card. | No separate PC or capture card is required for the documented Xbox workflow. |
| What microphone/camera path is documented? | Choose a microphone and camera as sources. | Use a headset microphone connected to the controller. An Xbox USB webcam or a phone used as a webcam is optional; a separate external microphone is not supported by the FAQ. |
| What destinations are documented? | The comparison lists Twitch, YouTube and Kick chat integration; destination support can change. | The documented multistream workflow requires Twitch and allows YouTube, TikTok and Kick as additional destinations—not standalone choices. |
Choose Desktop if you want PC-level control
Desktop is the better fit for a PC game, a broadcast built around desktop capture, or a production where you need to mix multiple sources and manage audio, scenes and recording from one application. It also makes sense for console gameplay if you want a PC-based production workflow and accept the extra hardware and setup.
Using Desktop with a console
In the documented capture-card approach, the console’s video output is routed through a capture device to the computer, then added in Desktop as a source. The computer runs the broadcast software and handles the production; the capture device bridges the console video to the PC. Streamlabs’ console setup guide names Elgato and AVerMedia as examples, but its hardware examples are dated. Check a specific capture card against your console, computer ports, resolution and frame-rate needs before buying. This route adds hardware cost and configuration; it is unnecessary for the Xbox Console workflow.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose Console if you stream Xbox without a capture setup
Console is designed for an Xbox player who wants Streamlabs scenes and engagement elements without routing gameplay through a computer. Streamlabs’ FAQ says to configure the stream in a browser and select Streamlabs as the destination in the Xbox Twitch app. It also says a headset microphone plugged into the controller is the supported mic route: a separate external microphone is not supported. For camera video, the FAQ describes an optional webcam connected to Xbox by USB or a phone used as a webcam. It lists multiple scenes and widgets including Chat Box, Event List and Stream Labels. See the Console FAQ for its setup and peripheral details.
Know the destination constraint
Streamlabs’ Xbox multistream guide documents a workflow with Twitch as a required destination and YouTube, TikTok and Kick as additional outputs. The cited material does not establish that those additional services can be selected by themselves through Console. Treat Console as Twitch-based for this documented multistream workflow rather than assuming it can broadcast to any one of the other platforms alone.

When native console broadcasting is enough
If you want the simplest route and do not need Streamlabs overlays or alerts, the console’s native broadcasting app may be enough. Streamlabs’ general console guide characterizes native apps as easy and cost-effective, with less customization and no Streamlabs alerts or overlays. That is a reasonable trade if avoiding a subscription or added hardware matters more than building a branded scene layout.
For PlayStation or Switch, do not assume Streamlabs Console is available: Streamlabs’ FAQ says those consoles are unsupported by Console. Desktop plus a capture device is a separate, more involved PC route, but the cited material does not settle the exact current PlayStation setup or equipment requirements. Confirm current platform documentation before buying hardware.

Cost, trial and plan scope
Streamlabs’ Console FAQ, published September 5, 2025, lists a seven-day free trial and these Console prices; they are the figures in that FAQ, not a live checkout verification:

Check the computer before installing Desktop
Streamlabs’ system-requirements page displays a minimum of Windows 10 or macOS 12 and 8 GB RAM, and recommends at least 16 GB RAM for demanding streams, animated overlays or advanced plugins. The page’s recommended operating-system text is internally inconsistent, and Streamlabs’ newer quick-start material gives differing details. Treat those numbers as a prompt to verify the live requirements page for your operating system and workload, not as a definitive purchase specification. See Streamlabs Desktop system requirements.
Another option for a continuous YouTube loop
If your goal is not interactive gameplay but keeping uploaded videos live on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a different kind of tool: it loops uploaded recordings from the cloud rather than capturing a live console or camera. It is YouTube-only. Upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Because the stream runs in the cloud, your computer does not have to stay on; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. See StreamNeo for details.
