If your laptop camera or microphone is not working, first check for a physical shutter, switch, keyboard control or mute button. Then test the device in another app. If it works there, focus on the original app or website’s permissions and device selection; if it fails everywhere, check system-wide privacy controls, restart and then investigate software or hardware.
Start with the laptop and the device
- Check for a physical block. Open the camera shutter, turn on any camera switch, or use the laptop’s dedicated camera or function key. Check the headset’s mute switch and connection if the microphone is the problem. Some Chromebooks have physical camera or microphone switches as well as software controls. Microsoft’s camera guidance and microphone guidance cover these checks.
- Test in another app. On Windows, open Start > Camera to check the camera. For a microphone, use the input test in Settings > System > Sound. If the device works in the system test but not in a meeting app or browser, the issue is more likely that app’s access or selected-device setting than a general device failure.
- Confirm the intended device is selected. A browser or app may be using a different camera or microphone, such as a connected headset or external webcam. Choose the intended device in that app’s settings, then test again.
Check system privacy permissions
Windows 11 camera
Open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera. Turn on Camera access and Let apps access your camera. If you are using a desktop program—such as a browser or many meeting apps—also enable Let desktop apps access your camera. Store apps may have their own access toggles. A setting that is unavailable or controlled by an administrator may require help from your workplace or school administrator.
Windows microphone
Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and allow device and app access. Then open Settings > System > Sound, choose the intended input and run its input test. Check the headset’s mute control and connection if the test shows no input. For Microsoft’s troubleshooting sequence, see Fix microphone problems.
macOS camera
Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and allow access for the affected app. Also check Screen Time > Content & Privacy > App Restrictions for camera restrictions. If macOS prompts you to quit and reopen the app after changing access, do so. Apple’s built-in camera guidance, published March 27, 2026, recommends updating macOS; it also advises Apple silicon users to restart. See If the built-in camera isn’t working on your Mac.

Chromebook
Open Settings > Privacy and security > Privacy controls. Enable device access, then check permission for the individual app. Web apps may also need camera or microphone permission in Chrome; Android apps use their app permissions. Refresh the app or page after changing access. Google notes that device-wide privacy controls and individual app permissions are separate checks. Check browser permissions for websites
Chrome has site-level controls in addition to the operating system’s privacy settings. Open Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Camera or Microphone. Allow the affected website, check that the right device is selected, then reload the page or restart Chrome. If the browser is managed by a school or employer, an administrator may control these settings. A site permission cannot override a system setting that blocks access. If the device still fails in every app
- Restart the laptop and test the camera or microphone again.
- Install available operating-system updates. For a Windows device that is still not detected, check for camera or audio driver updates; Microsoft documents driver reinstallation as a later microphone troubleshooting step.
- Check whether security software is blocking camera or microphone use, while avoiding changes to security settings you do not understand or control.
- For an external camera, reseat its USB connection and test it on another device. Compatibility depends on the laptop’s ports and operating system.
- If a built-in camera remains unavailable after these checks, contact the laptop manufacturer or an authorized service provider. Apple advises service for persistent built-in camera failure or a flashing green camera indicator.
Choose between repair and a workaround
If the internal camera is missing across apps after privacy, restart and software checks, manufacturer or authorized-service diagnosis is the route to a permanent hardware fix. An external USB webcam may be a quicker workaround, but confirm port and operating-system compatibility for the specific camera and laptop. The official guidance cited here does not establish a universal repair cost or a webcam model that works with every laptop.
