Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe strongest YouTube podcast topics start with a specific viewer, not a generic list of “viral” subjects. Use your audience’s questions and viewing habits to choose a clear episode promise, build it into a repeatable format, and review how similar episodes perform. No topic guarantees views: interest, competition, and viewer response all matter.
How to find podcast topics for your YouTube channel
- Name the viewer. Describe who the show serves and the questions, problems, interests, or decisions they bring. A documentary channel might serve viewers curious about a particular period, place, person, or unresolved question—but choose a focus that matches your own expertise and audience.
- Look at what your audience watches. In YouTube Studio, open Analytics and review the Audience tab. Available reports about other videos and channels your viewers watch can suggest episode subjects, guests, titles, thumbnails, or collaboration opportunities. YouTube notes that data availability can vary. YouTube’s Audience tab guidance explains the reports; its Analytics overview describes the wider set of channel metrics.
- Find patterns in your own uploads. Group past videos by intended audience, topic, format, style, longevity, or production budget. Compare similar groups over a meaningful date range rather than treating a single hit as a reliable baseline. Look for subjects and formats your viewers return to.
- Turn broad interests into episode questions. A pillar is a durable area your show can revisit; an episode is a distinct question or promise within it. For example, a history-focused pillar could become an episode examining why a particular decision was made, a guest’s contrasting account, a listener question, a case study, or a myth-versus-fact discussion. Treat these as starting prompts, not proven winners.
- Choose a repeatable format. Ask whether you can revisit the idea with new evidence, guests, cases, or audience submissions. YouTube’s content-planning guidance recommends looking for repeatable formats rather than relying on one-off success. YouTube’s planning guidance also discusses grouping content and considering its longevity and cost.
Podcast topic ideas to adapt
Use these as prompts and make each one specific to your intended audience, knowledge, and available material:
- One question, explained: Answer a question viewers repeatedly ask about a subject your show covers.
- A case study: Trace one person, event, decision, or investigation, and explain why it matters to your audience.
- Two perspectives: Invite a guest with a different experience or interpretation, and make the episode’s question clear in advance.
- Listener questions: Build an episode around questions submitted by viewers, grouping related ones into a coherent discussion.
- Myth versus evidence: Examine a common claim, distinguish what is documented from what remains uncertain, and explain the evidence.
- A timely change: Discuss a relevant development or anniversary, while connecting it to the show’s enduring subject matter.
- A recurring check-in: Return to a developing story, ongoing project, or question at useful intervals.
These are editorial formats, not topics YouTube certifies as successful. Ground them in viewer interest and your ability to make a useful, well-supported episode.
How to compare candidate topics
When several ideas seem promising, compare them against the same criteria. A simple scorecard can help your team make the trade-offs explicit; it is a planning aid, not a prediction of views.

| Criterion | Ask |
|---|---|
| Audience fit | Do your current or intended viewers show interest in this subject, based on their questions, viewing behavior, or response to related uploads? |
| Specificity and usefulness | Can you state what question the episode answers or what the viewer will understand afterward? YouTube’s search guidance says relevance between a query and the title, description, tags, and video content matters. Read YouTube’s search and discovery guidance. |
| Interest and competition | Is the subject likely to interest the audience you want to serve, and what other viewing choices might compete for their attention? A broad topic may have a larger potential audience and more competition; size alone is no guarantee. |
| Durability and repeatability | Will the episode remain useful, and can the format support worthwhile follow-ups? If it depends on a short-lived moment, decide whether it still serves the larger show. |
| Production effort | Can you obtain the guests, research, rights, time, and budget this episode requires—and repeat that effort if the format works? |
| Evidence after publishing | Which available measures—such as views, watch time, traffic sources, audience retention, and audience details—will help you understand how viewers responded? |
How to validate ideas without guessing at the algorithm
- Publish a focused episode. Give it a clear promise and make sure the episode delivers on its title and description.
- Review its performance in context. Use the metrics available in YouTube Analytics and compare the episode with similar videos over a useful period. A one-off spike does not establish a dependable format.
- Record the response. Note which subjects, approaches, or moments your audience engaged with, while considering how the episode was discovered and who watched it.
- Decide what to do next. Continue a format when patterns support it, adjust the angle when the audience’s response suggests a mismatch, or stop when the effort is not justified.
YouTube describes recommendations as personalized and identifies viewer interests and satisfaction as important. Topic interest, competition, and changes in viewer behavior can also affect reach; search involves relevance, engagement, and quality. These describe platform systems, not a formula for guaranteed performance. As YouTube puts it in its recommendation-system guidance: “Instead of asking, ‘Does the algorithm like my content?,’ creators should focus on their ‘audience’ and ask, ‘Does my audience like this?’”
Set up the YouTube podcast around the show
YouTube represents a podcast as a playlist and its episodes as videos. Its guidance recommends one public podcast playlist per show, with full-length episodes in consumption order. Keep seasons of the same show together rather than creating separate podcasts for each season; do not mix clips, unrelated shows, or uploads from other channels into the podcast playlist. Use the show’s actual name and a detailed description. YouTube’s podcast playlist guidance covers setup and eligibility.

Make an audio-first podcast available on YouTube
If you already produce an audio podcast, YouTube says eligible creators in select regions can submit an RSS feed. YouTube can create videos using the show’s art as a static image. Creators not using RSS can use a third-party tool to turn audio into video, such as an audiogram or another dynamic format; this is a production option, not a requirement for choosing topics. Check the current regional availability and policy details in YouTube’s RSS podcast guidance.
