Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA reliable podcast workflow moves from episode planning to recording, editing, RSS hosting, directory distribution, and a final release check. Start by choosing your recording and publishing route, then use the same preparation, backup, and verification steps for every episode.
Choose a workflow that fits your show
There is no single required podcast tool stack. Decide how you will record and edit, and whether you want a podcast host to maintain an RSS feed or plan to publish directly to a particular platform. The choice affects where you enter episode details and how you update or distribute each release.
- Format: Decide whether you are making audio, video, or both.
- Recording: A solo show can use a straightforward local setup; remote guests or multitrack needs may call for a different recording workflow.
- Editing: Match the editing process to the work required, from trimming a simple take to managing multiple tracks.
- Publishing ownership: With an RSS-hosted show, the host maintains the feed. A direct platform workflow may instead hand an edited file to that platform for episode details and publication.
- Distribution and schedule: Check which listening platforms can be connected, whether distribution is automatic or requires separate submission, and how scheduling works.
Official platform documentation describes available capabilities and procedures, not a universal best choice or independently measured product quality. Choose based on the format and release process your show needs.
Plan the episode before you record
Write down the topic, intended listener, format, participants, recording date, and intended release date. Draft the episode title and description before upload so missing metadata does not hold up publication. This is a practical planning method, not a requirement imposed by the platforms cited here.

Prepare your room and recording input
Choose a quiet room and reduce echo where practical. Connect a USB microphone directly to the computer; an XLR microphone requires an audio interface. Headphones let you monitor without sending speaker playback back into the recording. You can start with equipment you already have: buying a USB microphone, headphones, or an interface is optional, not a prerequisite.
In Audacity, select the microphone under Recording device and headphones under Playback device. For a single voice recorded with one microphone, Audacity recommends a mono voice track. Speak at your normal level while checking the meter; Audacity recommends speech peaks between −18 dB and −6 dB, leaving headroom below clipping. Audacity’s recording guidance

Record a test, then capture the episode
- Put on headphones and confirm that the intended microphone and playback devices are selected.
- Record a short test at normal speaking volume. Listen for room noise, echo, a missing input, or peaks that clip.
- Fix what you can before the full take: adjust the input level, reposition the microphone, or reduce nearby noise. Preventing clipping and poor room sound is safer than assuming software can repair them later.
- Record the episode. A few seconds of room silence can provide a sample for later noise reduction if needed, according to Audacity’s guidance.
- Listen to the take before moving on, checking that the voice is present and intelligible throughout.
Edit while keeping a safety copy
Keep the editable project separate from the file you intend to publish. Audacity’s recording manual recommends exporting a safety copy as WAV or AIFF immediately after recording and before editing. Save the project as well; Audacity’s getting-started guide covers saving projects and exporting audio. Audacity recording manual · Audacity getting-started guide
Use editing as a quality-control pass: remove clear mistakes and long dead air, check transitions and levels, and listen to the exported file from beginning to end. No general loudness target is established by the sources cited here, so do not treat an arbitrary number as a universal podcast requirement.

Publish through an RSS host or directly to a platform
RSS-hosted show
Upload and manage the episode through your podcast host. For an RSS-created show, Apple says an episode cannot be updated in Apple Podcasts Connect; make the change at the third-party host that maintains the feed. Apple requires an episode title and enclosure tags, and recommends tags for episode type, episode number, and release date. A new show submitted to Apple must pass technical validation and review. Direct platform workflow
A direct upload is different from distributing through an RSS host. Riverside documents a Spotify workflow in which an edited export opens in Spotify for Creators as a draft; the creator enters episode details and chooses to publish or schedule. By contrast, Riverside hosting can distribute to connected platforms, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube. Its host workflow publishes scheduled episodes to the RSS feed at the scheduled time. Confirm which route you are using before assuming a release or update will carry through automatically. Riverside’s Spotify publishing guide · Riverside distribution guide
Submit directories and verify each release
- Submit the show’s RSS feed to the listening platforms you want to reach, unless your chosen host’s connected distribution setup handles that destination.
- Check the first listing after directory submission, including the show details and episode information.
- After each release, verify the episode on the intended destinations: confirm it appears, the title and description are correct, and the audio plays as expected.
- For scheduled releases, check after the scheduled time. Do not assume that a scheduled upload to one service also publishes everywhere unless your distribution setup says it does.
Troubleshoot common workflow failures
- No microphone signal: Recheck the selected Recording device, the physical connection, and any audio interface used with an XLR microphone. Record another brief test before continuing.
- Playback bleeds into the recording: Use headphones rather than speakers while monitoring.
- Peaks clip: Lower the input level and test again at normal speaking volume. Clipping is better prevented than repaired.
- Room echo or noise is distracting: Reduce avoidable noise and reflective sound before recording; do not assume editing will fully fix the room.
- An Apple RSS episode needs an update: Make the change at the third-party hosting provider, not Apple Podcasts Connect.
- An episode is missing from a destination: Check whether that platform is connected to the host or requires separate feed submission, then check the scheduled time and listing directly.
- The published file contains an edit or export error: Listen to the exported audio from beginning to end before uploading; retain the editable project and pre-edit safety export in case you need to make a corrected version.
Or let it run in the cloud
Podcast recording and publishing are separate from keeping a pre-recorded video live on YouTube around the clock. If you also need an always-on YouTube stream from uploaded video, StreamNeo runs it from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; your uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
