To become a VTuber, choose an avatar format, make sure your tracking app supports it, connect the avatar and audio to streaming software, check your platform’s live-stream eligibility, then rehearse a complete test stream. You do not need a custom model or a full studio before you begin: start with compatible gear you already own and improve the setup once you know what kind of content you want to make.
1. Decide what kind of VTuber stream you want to make
Start with the content, not the avatar software. Gaming, chatting, drawing, music, and documentary commentary place different demands on your scenes and audio. A gaming stream, for example, needs the game and avatar visible together; a commentary stream may need space for material you are discussing. Sketch the screen layout and decide how much avatar movement you want before choosing a model.
You can begin with a simple avatar and upgrade later. A custom or expensive model is not a prerequisite for finding out whether you enjoy streaming. The key early decision is the model format, because tracking apps do not all support the same formats.
2. Choose an avatar format and compatible tracking software

VTube Studio is a specific option for Live2D, not a universal tracker. Its documentation describes tracking quality as iOS above webcam above Android; that is the vendor’s assessment, not an independent comparison. It also supports sending tracking data from a phone to a PC or Mac over a local network. Read VTube Studio’s current documentation.

If you choose VTube Studio
- Use a Live2D Cubism model. Do not buy or prepare a VRM/VRoid model expecting to load it directly in VTube Studio.
- Webcam tracking works with webcams generally. The documentation recommends 1280×720 or higher for good eye and blink tracking, and says 15–30 FPS is sufficient for webcam tracking. These are the vendor’s recommendations, not a guarantee that every camera or computer will produce the same result.
- A phone is optional if you use webcam tracking. The documentation lists iPhone/iPad devices with Face ID and certain A12-or-newer devices as supported iOS examples. It says recent Android devices should generally work, while older ones may not. Check its current device requirements before buying or relying on a particular phone.
VTube Studio is available on mobile and desktop. Check the current Steam listing and documentation for current app details and system requirements.
3. Get a model you have permission to use
You can create, commission, or obtain a model, provided it works with your tracking software. Match the file format to the route you picked: Live2D for the VTube Studio route, or a compatible VRM/VRoid format for software that supports 3D models. Before using a model publicly, read its license and confirm whether streaming, monetization, edits, and commercial use are allowed. Do not assume that a downloadable model is cleared for every use.
If commissioning an artist, agree on the deliverables and permitted uses before work begins. Ask which tracking apps and formats the model supports, and whether any expressions or toggles are included. You can postpone a bespoke model until you have established the content style you want.

4. Prepare the computer, microphone, and streaming scene
Install the avatar tracker and a broadcast application such as OBS. VTube Studio says it works with OBS, Streamlabs, and other streaming software. Add the avatar as a source, then place your microphone, game or other content, and any overlays into scenes that match the stream you planned.

Build and inspect the scene
- Set up a starting scene. Add the avatar and microphone, then add the game capture, browser or other content source needed for your format.
- Check the avatar capture. Confirm the model is framed correctly and that the capture does not show application controls, menus, or desktop clutter you did not intend to broadcast.
- Check audio separately. Speak at the volume you expect to use. Make sure the microphone is selected and that its level is clear without overwhelming game or other source audio.
- Make a second scene if needed. A chatting or break scene can be useful, but keep the first setup simple enough to operate while talking or playing.
Hardware requirements for one application do not establish that a computer can run tracking, a game, overlays, and encoding smoothly at once. The OBS documentation specifically cautions that meeting its requirements does not guarantee effective streaming or recording. Check the current OBS system requirements, and test the actual combination of game, avatar, and scenes you plan to use. The VTube Studio Steam listing gives minimum and recommended specifications for that app; those are not a promise of performance for the whole broadcast setup.
5. Check that your channel can go live
Platform rules and account status can change, so confirm eligibility in the platform’s current help pages before planning a debut.

YouTube
YouTube Help says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. The help page also states that streamers must be at least 16. YouTube describes encoder streaming as an option for gameplay, overlays, and hardware such as microphones and cameras. Review YouTube’s live-streaming help for the current requirements and account steps.
Twitch
Twitch Help says streamers need a stable internet connection and a video encoder, and lists OBS among software options. See Twitch’s streaming software guidance for current details.

Do a complete test before announcing a debut. Use a private or unlisted test where the platform offers that option. Check tracking, microphone clarity, game or content capture, scene changes, and network stability together—not just one at a time. If the avatar looks fine in its own app but disappears in the broadcast preview, fix the capture source before going live.

- Move your face naturally and verify that eyes, mouth, and expressions respond as expected.
- Speak while other audio is playing and check that your voice remains understandable.
- Switch every scene you plan to use and confirm the correct sources appear.
- Watch the stream output on another device if possible; the creator preview may not reveal every viewer-facing issue.
7. Troubleshoot common first-stream problems
The avatar software will not load the model
Likely cause: the model format is not supported by that app. Fix: confirm the model’s format and use software that supports it. In particular, VTube Studio supports Live2D models, not VRoid/VRM.
Webcam tracking is weak or misses blinks
Likely cause: insufficient image detail, inconsistent lighting, camera placement, or a device that does not meet the tracker’s expectations. Fix: for VTube Studio webcam tracking, follow the documentation’s 1280×720-or-higher recommendation, place the camera where your face is visible, and check the current tracking and device guidance. A compatible phone is another possible tracking input, not a requirement.
The computer stutters when the stream is running
Likely cause: the combined load of tracking, game, scenes, and encoding exceeds what the computer handles smoothly, even if an individual app’s listed requirements are met. Fix: test the whole setup, simplify scenes or overlays, and reduce the load from the game or other simultaneous tasks before the public stream. Do not treat minimum software specifications as a whole-system performance guarantee.

The avatar appears in its app but not in OBS
Likely cause: the avatar source was not added or captured correctly, or the selected scene is different from the one being previewed. Fix: inspect the active scene and source visibility, then rehearse a scene switch and verify the broadcast output.
The platform will not let you start a live stream
Likely cause: channel verification, an account restriction, age eligibility, or another current platform requirement. Fix: review the platform’s help page and account status before troubleshooting the encoder; a streaming app cannot override channel eligibility rules.
