To translate a YouTube video, choose what viewers need in another language: translated title and description, subtitles, or translated spoken audio. In YouTube Studio, set the video’s original language first, then add translated metadata or captions, use automatic dubbing if the video is eligible, or upload a prepared audio track if your channel has access to multi-language audio.
Choose what to translate
YouTube treats metadata, captions and dubbed audio as separate features. They serve different needs, and enabling one does not automatically provide the others.
| What you add | What viewers get | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Translated title and description | A title and description in another language; YouTube says these can be searchable by viewers using that language. | Does not translate the speech in the video. |
| Subtitles or captions | On-screen text representing speech, including translated text when you add another language. | Useful for comprehension and accessibility, including for deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers. |
| Automatic dubbing | A generated translated audio track for eligible videos and language pairs. | Availability varies, and generated speech may need review. |
| Creator-prepared multi-language audio | An audio track you or a localization provider records and uploads for a language. | YouTube hosts the track but does not create it for you; access is limited. |
For documentary material, a practical choice is often to translate metadata and add subtitles first, then consider dubbing when spoken-language access is important and you can review the result.
Set the original video language first
The original-language setting is used in caption and translation workflows. Check it before creating captions or relying on automated dubbing; an incorrect setting can interfere with the results. You can review the language setting in YouTube Studio using YouTube’s instructions for changing the language of an uploaded video.

Translate a title and description
- Open YouTube Studio. Go to Subtitles and select the video.
- Add the target language. Choose Add language for the language you want to publish.
- Enter the translated metadata. Under Title and description, add the translated title and description.
- Publish. Review spelling, names and meaning, then publish the translation.
YouTube says translated titles and descriptions can appear in search for viewers using those translations. Treat this as a discoverability opportunity, not a promise of higher rankings, views or watch time. See YouTube’s title and description translation guidance.
Add subtitles or captions in another language
Captions represent speech as text; translated subtitles let viewers follow a video when they do not understand its spoken language. YouTube may automatically create captions for the original spoken language, but creators should check and correct them rather than assume they are error-free.

Use automatic dubbing when the video is eligible
Automatic dubbing creates translated audio tracks for eligible creators and videos. YouTube says the feature is enabled by default for eligible creators; some channels may have an early-access control if it is not enabled. In Studio, creators can choose whether dubs publish automatically or require manual review, and can preview, publish, unpublish or delete generated tracks on a computer.

Check access and language availability
Open the video’s Languages view in YouTube Studio to see the languages available for that specific video, including experimental languages. Support is not universal and may change as YouTube expands its language options. Eligibility issues can include a video longer than 120 minutes, little or no speech, an unsupported or undetected source language, speech pacing, or copyright claims. The 120-minute figure is an eligibility condition YouTube lists, not a guarantee that shorter videos qualify.
Preview before publishing
Listen to the complete dub when accuracy matters, especially for documentaries with names, dates, quotations, dialects or technical vocabulary. Generated audio can contain errors related to pronunciation, accent, dialect, background noise, speech recognition, idioms and jargon. YouTube says automatic dubs cannot be edited. If the original video language was set incorrectly, correcting it can lead to dubs being regenerated. Read YouTube’s automatic dubbing guidance for current controls and eligibility details.

Upload a prepared multi-language audio track
This is a separate option from automatic dubbing. You, a translator or a dubbing provider must prepare the audio; YouTube does not generate the uploaded track. YouTube limits access to creators with Advanced features, and access or rollout can vary.
- Prepare the dubbed recording for the target language and align it to the video.
- Open the video’s language controls in YouTube Studio and add the language.
- Upload the supported audio-only file for that language.
- Review and publish the track in the video’s language settings.
If an automatic dub already exists in the same language, YouTube says it must be deleted before you can upload a replacement track. Consult YouTube’s multi-language features instructions for access and upload details.

Decide between subtitles and dubbing
- Use translated metadata when the immediate goal is to present the video clearly to speakers of another language and make its title and description available in that language.
- Use subtitles when viewers can follow translated text, or when precise wording and accessibility matter.
- Try automatic dubbing when a generated spoken version is available and you can review it before it reaches viewers.
- Use prepared audio when you need editorial control over the voice, translation and delivery and can invest in recording or localization.
YouTube does not provide comparative accuracy benchmarks or a universal cost estimate for these approaches. The choice depends on channel and video access, language availability, the need for speech versus text, review requirements and production effort.
What viewers can change
Viewers can set preferred languages for audio, titles and descriptions, and switch between available audio tracks in the player. YouTube uses language-related signals to match content to viewers, but the version selected may not depend only on a viewer’s primary language setting. Details are in YouTube’s guide to preferred languages.
Common problems and fixes
- The expected dub language is missing: Check the individual video’s Languages view. Eligibility, language-pair support and rollout vary; the channel may not have access for that video.
- Automatic dubbing is unavailable: Check whether the video has little speech, exceeds YouTube’s stated 120-minute eligibility limit, uses an unsupported or undetected source language, has unusual speech pacing or has a copyright claim. These are possible eligibility reasons, not an exhaustive diagnostic guarantee.
- Captions or automated translation behave unexpectedly: Verify the video’s original-language setting before retrying the workflow.
- A generated dub mispronounces a name or mistranslates a phrase: Preview it and use manual review before publication where available. YouTube says automatic dubs cannot be edited; if the source-language setting was wrong, correct it because YouTube may regenerate the dub.
- You cannot replace an automatic dub with your own track: Delete the existing automatic dub for that language first, then upload the prepared track if your account has multi-language audio access.
- Viewers do not see the language version you expect: Available tracks and viewer language preferences influence the experience; viewers can also switch audio tracks in the player.
Keep a translated documentary in an always-on YouTube loop
Translation features add language tracks to a video; they do not keep a YouTube channel live. If you want an already-uploaded translated documentary or playlist to play as a continuous YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service for looping uploaded videos to YouTube. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and monthly billing is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
