Choose portrait (9:16), landscape (16:9), or a supported dual-format option, then check the audience-facing preview before going live. The exact control depends on where you stream.
Portrait vs. landscape: what changes?
Portrait is a tall 9:16 frame; landscape is a wide 16:9 frame in the streaming-studio workflows covered here. Rotating a phone may change how its camera or display is oriented, but it does not necessarily change an encoder’s canvas or the destination’s output format.
A portrait crop made from a landscape composition can cut off content at the sides. If your service provides a separate portrait layout, fit, or reposition sources there and inspect that preview. Do not assume the landscape preview represents what portrait viewers will see.
Change orientation in YouTube Live Control Room
YouTube says streams started from Live Control Room go live in horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 formats by default. The vertical version initially uses a center crop. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, edit the vertical layout using center crop, fit to phone width, or stacked options; you can also adjust zoom and position. Check both outputs before starting.

For a third-party encoder dual-stream workflow, YouTube describes using RTMP(S) and selecting a second stream key for the vertical output. YouTube uses the vertical version for Shorts-feed viewers and the horizontal version for other viewers, with one shared stream URL and chat. Available features can differ between formats; consult YouTube’s live-streaming guidance for current details.
Change orientation in TikTok LIVE Studio
- Right-click the scene you want to use.
- Select Switch layout, then Dual layout.
- Edit the portrait layout first. Sources and widgets sync to landscape, where you can change their position and size.
- Preview both layouts. Full-screen video is proportionally scaled and centered rather than cropped or distorted.
Chatbox and ranking widgets are removed when switching a landscape scene to dual layout because those widgets are not supported in portrait. See TikTok LIVE Studio’s dual-layout instructions.

Choose portrait or landscape in Restream Studio
Assign channels to Portrait or Landscape before starting. Restream’s portrait mode uses 9:16, with 1080×1920 or 720×1280 options described in its guidance; landscape uses 16:9. Orientation cannot be switched while live, and some platforms may not support portrait video. Confirm the format for each destination before you start. Details are in Restream’s portrait-mode guide.
Choose a mode in Streamlabs Talk Studio
Before going live or starting a recording, select the portrait-mode icon and toggle Portrait or Landscape. Streamlabs says this control cannot be switched after going live or starting a recording, so verify the selection and preview first. See Streamlabs’ Talk Studio instructions.

Use the orientation supported by your mobile app
Mobile behavior is app-specific. For example, the Roland GO:LIVECAST manual says its app can be used in portrait or landscape and broadcasts in the orientation being used. That is not a universal rule for every phone, app, or destination. Check your app’s preview and instructions rather than relying on the phone’s rotation alone. Roland GO:LIVECAST Owner’s Manual.
Before you go live
- Decide whether you need portrait, landscape, or both.
- Check the destination’s support for the selected format; some platforms may not accept portrait video.
- Preview the actual audience-facing output, especially if the portrait version is cropped from a landscape source.
- For dual output, inspect each layout independently and confirm that important text, faces, and visual details remain in frame.
- Set orientation before starting if your studio locks it once the broadcast or recording begins.
Troubleshooting orientation problems
The phone is vertical, but the stream is horizontal
The phone’s rotation may affect the camera or display without changing the configured output canvas. Choose portrait in the streaming software or destination and verify its outgoing preview.

The portrait output cuts off the sides
A center crop can omit the edges of a landscape composition. Adjust zoom and position, choose a fit or stacked layout if available, or build a separate portrait layout and check it before going live.
The orientation control is unavailable after starting
Some studios require orientation to be selected before going live or recording. If the control is locked, end the session and set the desired orientation before starting again.

A widget disappears in dual layout
Some elements are not supported in every format. TikTok LIVE Studio, for example, removes chatbox and ranking widgets when a landscape scene is switched to dual layout because they are unsupported in portrait. Review each layout’s supported elements.
A destination does not show portrait video
Support varies by platform and destination. Confirm portrait availability for the specific channel before choosing that output; a studio’s portrait setting does not guarantee every destination will accept it.
