How to Fix Dropped Frames and Improve Stream Quality

Learn how to distinguish network drops from rendering or encoding lag in OBS, troubleshoot the right cause, and handle viewer buffering.

Start by identifying which frames are being lost. In OBS, an increasing Dropped Frames counter points to a connection or bitrate problem; rendering lag or an encoding-overload warning points to computer resources. If viewers report buffering while OBS shows no dropped frames, their playback conditions may be the issue rather than your outgoing stream.

Diagnose the symptom before changing settings

What you see What it suggests First check
OBS Dropped Frames rises; connection status turns yellow or red The connection to the streaming server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Test the ingest server and bitrate, then check the local network and ISP route.
Missed rendering frames or an encoding-overload message The computer may be short on resources for the game, OBS composition and encoding together. Check GPU load, output settings and scene complexity.
Viewers report buffering, but OBS shows no dropped frames Viewer networks, locations and devices may be limiting playback. Check OBS’s counter first; then consider a lower-bitrate stream that is easier to receive.

These symptoms are different. OBS says the software itself is extremely unlikely to cause network dropped frames; its guidance separates connection trouble from rendering and encoding performance issues. OBS Help Portal

Fix network dropped frames in OBS

Work through connection variables one at a time. A speed test gives a total upload figure, but it does not prove that the route to a particular streaming server can sustain that rate consistently.

1. Test the streaming ingest server

Try a different ingest server for the service you are streaming to. For Twitch on Windows, OBS names TwitchTest as a way to find a server with a better Quality score. If you use Twitch Enhanced Broadcasting, test with it disabled or set its maximum streaming bandwidth below the TwitchTest result. These are Twitch-specific checks; other services may provide different server-selection tools. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Reduce bitrate to a sustainable level

Lower the video bitrate in OBS and check whether the dropped-frame counter stops increasing. OBS Project’s 2024 guidance suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point. Treat that as a rule of thumb, not a guarantee: upload speed can vary, and the route to the ingest server may be less reliable than a general speed test suggests. Stay within the streaming service’s current limits; the right setting depends on the service, route and connection.

3. Isolate the service and local network

  • Test another streaming service as a diagnostic. If the problem changes, that can help distinguish a service-specific route issue from a broader connection problem; changing services does not itself fix the cause.
  • Use wired Ethernet if practical. OBS notes Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming.
  • Temporarily check whether a VPN, security software or network-prioritization utility is interfering. OBS cites Lenovo Vantage and Killer NIC software as examples of tools that may deprioritize OBS.
  • Check that network drivers are current. If a problem began after a driver or network-software change, test whether reverting that change helps.

4. Check the network path without replacing hardware blindly

A faulty cable, modem, router, network card, switch or extender can disrupt the connection. Check connections and isolate suspect equipment where possible rather than buying replacements on guesswork. OBS recommends asking your ISP if you are unsure whether local hardware is at fault. If the issue persists after local checks, contact the ISP: congestion or routing beyond your home network may be involved. OBS Project’s connection guide

5. Use OBS network options as controlled tests

OBS lists Windows-only network optimizations and TCP pacing among possible checks. It also recommends setting Bind to IP to Default and testing IPv4 Only. If IPv4-only makes no difference, restore IPv4 and IPv6 rather than leaving the change in place without benefit.

Dynamic Bitrate Adjustment can reduce bitrate during congestion and may prevent interruptions, but OBS cautions that it does not solve the underlying connection issue and lowers stream quality while active. Use it as a mitigation, not a substitute for diagnosing the route or upload stability.

Fix rendering lag and encoding overload

When OBS reports missed rendering frames or encoding overload, focus on available system resources rather than changing the ingest server. OBS’s performance guide recommends reducing competing GPU work and simplifying what OBS must render. OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting

1. Reserve resources for OBS

On Windows, try launching OBS with Run as administrator. OBS says this can reserve GPU capacity for OBS and often resolves GPU-overload issues. Close or limit other programs that are heavily using the GPU.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

2. Reduce the game’s GPU demand

  • Cap the game’s frame rate at the monitor’s refresh rate.
  • Try V-Sync.
  • Lower demanding graphics settings.

These steps can leave more GPU capacity for OBS’s scene rendering and encoding. Change one setting at a time so you can tell which change affects the overload.

3. Lower output resolution or frame rate

If the system cannot keep up, reduce OBS output resolution or frame rate. If 60 fps is unstable, OBS suggests trying 30 fps. A lower output demand can improve consistency, though it changes the delivered stream’s detail or motion smoothness.

When viewers buffer but OBS does not drop frames

First confirm the broadcaster-side Dropped Frames counter is not increasing. Viewers use different networks, locations and devices, so buffering alone does not establish that your connection to the stream server is failing. OBS notes that lowering bitrate—and, if needed, resolution or frame rate—can make playback more accessible to viewers with less bandwidth, particularly on services that do not provide transcoding. The trade-off is lower quality for everyone receiving that stream. OBS Stream Buffering Troubleshooting
