Streamlabs’ documented legacy workflow specifies Python 2.7.13 and its Lib folder; check your exact version’s requirements before installing that older runtime.
Before you begin: Desktop Chatbot or Cloudbot?
These steps are for Streamlabs Desktop Chatbot, a Windows-only application. Streamlabs directs Linux and Mac users toward Cloudbot, which is a separate online product—not a different interface for importing Desktop Chatbot scripts. The instructions here do not establish that Cloudbot supports the same scripts or is a drop-in replacement. See Streamlabs’ Desktop Chatbot FAQ and its separate Cloudbot setup guide.
Configure the documented Python runtime
Streamlabs’ script-specific support article, originally published August 5, 2020 and reported updated April 25, 2025, documents Python 2.7.13 for its legacy Desktop Chatbot script workflow. A related Streamlabs support repository troubleshooting note specifies Python 2.7.13 x86 and warns that newer Python versions or x64 can cause errors in this application. These are version-specific legacy requirements, not a recommendation to use Python 2.7 for general programming. Confirm the requirement for your installed Chatbot version before installing runtime software.
- Install the Python version and architecture required by your Chatbot version. Streamlabs’ documented workflow calls for Python 2.7.13.
- In Chatbot, open the Scripts tab and its settings. Set the Python directory to the runtime’s
Libfolder. The documented default example isC:Python27Lib; your path depends on where Python was installed. - Check that the folder is named
Lib, notLibs, then save the setting. Streamlabs’ Chatbot Scripts [Desktop Chatbot] article and its Python scripting PDF describe selecting theLibfolder and reloading scripts.
Make the Scripts tab appear
If the Scripts tab is missing, connect or reconnect both the bot account and streamer account under Connections, making sure they are connected to the streamer’s channel. Streamlabs documents this connection as a requirement for the tab to appear.

Import a script ZIP
Desktop Chatbot does not preload scripts: the support repository says they must be imported manually. Obtain a ZIP from a source you trust. Streamlabs suggests its Chatbot Discord or someone you know well, but that is not a guarantee that every shared file is safe.
- Open Chatbot’s Scripts tab.
- Select Import in the upper-right corner.
- Choose the script’s ZIP file and open it.
- Allow a short time for the script to appear in the Scripts view.
If it does not appear, Streamlabs says a setup step may have been missed or the script may be broken. The official steps do not define one universal configuration or enable sequence for all third-party scripts. Once a script appears, follow the instructions and controls supplied with that particular script rather than assuming every script works the same way.

Use scripts cautiously
The community scripting documentation warns that scripts can access files on your computer. Before running one, consider who wrote it, whether you can inspect its code, what permissions or access it requests, and whether it has a credible update history. Do not run a script you do not trust.
When a script needs an API key
Only handle an API key if the script or a connected client requires it. The scripting documentation describes right-clicking a script to insert a key by creating a small .js file in the script folder for access to Chatbot’s websocket server. Treat that key like a password: do not share it publicly. If you refresh it, the relevant client.js files must also be updated.

Troubleshoot scripts that fail to load
- The Scripts tab is absent: reconnect the bot and streamer accounts under Connections to the streamer’s channel.
- The script fails with “No module named
os” or “No module namedjson”: verify the Python version and architecture required by your Chatbot version, and confirm the configured path points toLib, notLibs. These checks do not guarantee a fix if the script itself is invalid. - An unexpected-token error appears: check the runtime version and
Libpath first; a broken or incompatible script may still be the cause. - Import finishes, but the script is not listed: recheck the setup and inspect the Scripts error view. The script may be broken.
- The script appears but does not behave as expected: inspect that script’s own instructions and error details. The official setup guidance does not specify a universal configuration workflow for third-party scripts.
The support repository identifies the Scripts error view as the main troubleshooting aid; Streamlabs’ Python scripting PDF also describes viewing errors and reloading scripts in the Scripts view.
