The former Skype for Content Creators workflow sent a call’s audio and video to production software using NDI, but the exact legacy setup steps are not established here. If you need a current route, NDI documents a broadcast workflow for the new Microsoft Teams client on Windows; whether Teams Free accounts can use it must be checked for your account before you plan a podcast around it.
What happened to Skype’s NDI podcast workflow?
NDI is a way for software and devices to send and receive audio and video over an IP network. It is a connectivity technology, not a podcast recording app by itself. Skype for Content Creators historically offered NDI outputs, which let a producer bring call feeds into compatible production software.
That consumer Skype workflow is now historical. Microsoft Support gives May 5, 2025 as Skype consumer’s retirement date. Microsoft Lifecycle lists May 6, 2025, displayed in Pacific Time. Skype for Business is a separate product and is not covered by the consumer retirement notice. Microsoft directed Skype users toward Microsoft Teams Free, but that does not establish that Teams Free accounts can broadcast NDI.
Microsoft executive Jeff Teper wrote on February 28, 2025, “In order to streamline our free consumer communications offerings so we can more easily adapt to customer needs, we will be retiring Skype in May 2025 to focus on Microsoft Teams (free), our modern communications and collaboration hub.”

What you need for an NDI podcast call now
- A calling app with NDI output for your account. NDI’s instructions cover the new Teams client on Windows, but do not confirm eligibility for Teams Free. Check current feature availability for your account before relying on it.
- NDI Tools. NDI’s official installation guide directs users to its website to download the installer for Windows or Mac. The official download page listed version 6.3.2 on October 3, 2026; versions can change, so use the current official download rather than assuming that number will remain current.
- Receiving software. NDI identifies OBS Studio, Streamlabs, and vMix as integrations. Compatibility depends on the current receiver software and version; check that software’s current NDI/plugin instructions.
- A suitable network path. The sending and receiving devices need to communicate over an appropriate network. Ethernet is one option, not a universal requirement. NDI describes formats up to 4K 60fps in 10-bit HDR, but that vendor description is not a guarantee that a particular account, computer, network, or receiver will support or deliver those formats.
How to set up the documented Teams NDI path
These instructions reflect NDI’s guidance for the new Teams client on Windows, not a confirmed recipe for every Teams account. In particular, verify whether your account is eligible before scheduling a recording.
- Install NDI Tools. Open NDI’s official Tools installation/download pages, choose the Windows installer, and install the NDI files. Download from NDI’s official site and follow its current installer prompts.
- Enable NDI in Teams. In the new Teams client, open Settings and more, then Settings, then App permissions. Enable NDI, following the current Teams interface if its labels differ.
- Start the call and enable its NDI broadcast. During the call, use the call controls to enable Broadcast over NDI. NDI documents this as a per-call action in addition to the app permission.
- Open your receiver. In compatible production software, locate the incoming NDI source for the call and add it to the podcast scene or production. The precise source-selection controls depend on the receiver and version.
- Check picture and sound before recording. Confirm that the guest feed appears in the receiver and that the intended audio is routed and audible. Make a short test recording and review it before a live episode; do not assume that seeing video means the right audio source is selected.
Network and production checks
Keep both ends reachable
NDI carries media over IP. The caller’s device and receiving production system need an appropriate network path for the source to appear. A wired Ethernet connection may be useful in a podcast room where you want a wired layout, but a new cable is not required in every setup. NDI’s creator material describes connecting PCs, cameras, and other sources over an existing network.

Do not treat format claims as a setup guarantee
NDI advertises formats up to 4K 60fps in 10-bit HDR. That is a description of the NDI ecosystem’s capabilities, not independent performance testing and not a promise for Teams, every device, or a particular network. Choose a format your full chain can handle and confirm the result in your receiver.
Check the receiving application and version
OBS Studio, Streamlabs, and vMix are named in NDI creator material as integrations. That does not guarantee that every release has the same NDI workflow. Consult the current documentation for the specific receiver and any required plugin before a production.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
What cannot be carried over from the Skype instructions
There is no basis here for giving exact historical Skype menu paths or requirements: the detailed original Skype setup interface has not been established. Nor do the available Teams instructions establish that Teams Free supports NDI for every consumer account. Treat Teams as a possible current route only after verifying NDI eligibility for the account and client you intend to use.
When evaluating any replacement, check whether the calling service is still supported, whether NDI output is enabled for your account, which operating systems qualify, whether output is enabled globally or per call, what your receiving software version supports, and whether your network can carry the source.

Troubleshooting an NDI podcast feed
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No NDI source appears | The app permission, per-call broadcast, account eligibility, or network path may be missing. | Confirm NDI is enabled in Teams App permissions and that Broadcast over NDI is enabled in the call. Verify account eligibility and that the sender and receiver can communicate over the network. |
| Teams has no NDI permission or broadcast option | The documented workflow is for new Teams on Windows; availability for Teams Free is not confirmed here. | Check current Microsoft and NDI feature guidance for your account type, client, and operating system. Do not assume that switching from Skype to Teams Free guarantees the feature. |
| The source appears, but the production app does not handle it as expected | Receiver or plugin compatibility may differ by version. | Check the current NDI instructions for your receiver, including any plugin requirements, then test with a short recording. |
| Video works but the guest’s audio is missing or wrong | The feed may be present while the production scene’s audio routing is not set as intended. | Inspect the receiver’s audio source and routing, monitor the guest feed, and review a test recording before the episode. |
| Quality or stability is below expectations | NDI’s published format capabilities do not guarantee a result for every device or network. | Check both endpoints, the receiver version, and the network path; test at a format supported by the complete setup rather than assuming the highest advertised format will work. |
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is for keeping a prerecorded YouTube channel live from uploaded videos; it does not capture a podcast call, take a camera live, or replace an NDI guest feed. If you also want an always-on YouTube stream built from recordings, upload a video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams what you upload at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
