Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For most single-PC streamers, start with the hardware encoder already supported by your computer: it can move video encoding off the CPU and leave more processing headroom for a game or other applications. Use OBS’s x264 software encoder when your CPU has room and testing shows it suits your stream. Neither option always produces the best-looking video; encoder generation, bitrate, settings, content, and system load all matter.
What hardware and software encoding mean
Hardware encoding
A specialized video-encoding unit performs the encode. It is commonly built into a GPU or graphics platform, and you choose and configure it in software such as OBS. OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync Video (QSV), and Apple VideoToolbox as hardware encoder families. This does not mean you need a separate broadcast box.
Software encoding
The computer’s general-purpose processor performs the encode. OBS’s software option includes x264. Encoding uses CPU capacity that might otherwise be available to a game or other applications, but it can be a reasonable choice when the processor has enough headroom and the selected settings work well.
Dedicated encoder appliances
A standalone broadcast encoder is a separate, purpose-built device and a different category from a GPU’s built-in encoder. It is not a normal prerequisite for a single-PC stream.

OBS’s hardware-encoding guide explains these options and platform compatibility. The page is dated January 11, 2022, so treat its generation and compatibility notes as a starting point; check current OBS, operating-system, driver, and device support before buying hardware.
How the two approaches compare
| Decision factor | Hardware encoding | Software encoding |
|---|---|---|
| Where the work runs | A specialized encoding unit, commonly integrated into a GPU or graphics platform. | The CPU, using an encoder such as x264 in OBS. |
| System-resource trade-off | OBS says hardware encoding takes work off the CPU and can have minimal system-performance impact. A game can still compete for GPU resources, so test the setup you intend to use. | Consumes CPU capacity. A capable processor may have enough room to encode while running a game and other applications. |
| Quality at a given bitrate | Newer hardware encoders can provide very good quality. OBS cautions that earlier generations may look worse than x264 at the same bitrate and its default veryfast preset. | Results depend on x264’s preset, available CPU time, bitrate, content, and settings. There is no universal quality advantage. |
| Compatibility | Depends on the specific encoder, GPU or processor, operating system, drivers, OBS version, codec, and streaming destination. | Depends on adequate CPU capacity and a supported software-encoder configuration. |
| Best way to decide | Check which encoder your system exposes, then test it with representative content and the destination’s accepted settings. | Check CPU headroom and test your target resolution, frame rate, and content before relying on it. |
These are decision criteria, not the results of a controlled test comparing current hardware. A codec name alone also does not settle the question: the encoder generation, configuration, target bitrate, and the work your computer is doing during a stream affect the outcome.

Check which encoders your system and platform support
OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC and AMD AMF on Windows and Linux. Intel QSV is available on Windows and Linux with supported Intel processors that have graphics. VideoToolbox is supported on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs; OBS notes that streaming with VideoToolbox is not supported on Intel Macs because of the lack of constant-bitrate support required by most streaming services, and advises using x264 for streaming on that configuration. Verify the exact device, driver, operating system, OBS release, and codec you intend to use rather than relying on a broad brand or generation label. Compatibility notes can change as software and drivers evolve.
The destination matters too. YouTube’s live encoder settings list H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds, and provides bitrate ranges that vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. These are YouTube requirements and recommendations, not universal settings for every streaming service. Match the stream to a reliable upload connection, test before going live, and monitor stream health.

If you want to stream HDR on YouTube
YouTube’s HDR guidance says HDR live streaming requires HEVC. OBS’s setup instructions call for a compatible hardware HEVC encoder and Main 10 profile, along with HDR/P010 and a supported HDR color space. YouTube also names compatible dedicated encoder products for certain HLS HDR workflows, including Cobalt and Telestream Lightspeed Live Stream. Those specialized examples do not make HDR necessary for ordinary streaming or make an appliance a default choice for a single-PC gaming stream.
If you stream to Twitch
The Twitch Broadcasting Guidelines page is available here, but the official page’s current codec, bitrate, and feature requirements are not established in the material available for this article. Check Twitch’s current guidance directly rather than applying YouTube’s settings or assuming a particular encoder is fully compatible.

Choose and test an encoder before a live broadcast
- Check what OBS offers. Confirm that the encoder you plan to use appears and works with your current operating system, drivers, OBS version, and intended codec. Do not buy a GPU or appliance until you know the hardware you already have cannot meet the requirement.
- Set the destination’s accepted output. For YouTube, use its current settings for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval within YouTube’s stated maximum of four seconds; consult its bitrate guidance for the specific output you want.
- Make a representative test. Test the same resolution, frame rate, content, and encoder settings you expect to use live. Include the demanding parts of the workload: for example, fast movement if you are streaming a game, or the busiest scenes in a documentary or other video.
- Check both system and stream behavior. Observe whether the CPU or GPU is under pressure, whether the picture is acceptable at the chosen bitrate, and whether the destination reports stream-health problems. A setting that works on a quiet desktop may behave differently while a game or other application is running.
- Change one variable at a time. If the stream stutters, loses quality, or strains the system, adjust the encoder choice or its settings and repeat the test. Keep the settings that meet the destination’s requirements and remain stable under the workload you actually stream.
Common problems and what to check
- The stream stutters while a game runs: Encoding or gameplay may be competing for system resources. Test the hardware encoder if one is available; if using x264, check CPU headroom and repeat the test under the same game load. Hardware encoding can still share GPU resources with a game.
- The video looks worse than expected: Check the bitrate, output resolution and frame rate, content motion, encoder generation, and encoder settings. An older hardware encoder may look worse than x264 at the same bitrate under the comparison OBS describes; that does not establish that every software encoder is better.
- Your chosen encoder or codec is missing: Verify device capabilities, drivers, operating-system support, and the OBS release. Also check that the destination accepts the codec. A codec listed for YouTube is not automatically supported by every destination.
- YouTube reports a stream-health issue: Confirm the output against YouTube’s current codec, CBR, keyframe, and bitrate guidance for the selected resolution and frame rate. Check that the upload connection is reliable, then test and monitor again before relying on the configuration live.
- You are trying to stream HDR from an Intel Mac: OBS says VideoToolbox streaming is unsupported on Intel Macs because the required constant-bitrate support is lacking. For YouTube HDR, HEVC is required; follow the current OBS and YouTube setup guidance for a compatible configuration.
Do you need a new GPU or encoder appliance?
Not necessarily. First check whether your computer already exposes a supported hardware encoder and whether x264 can meet your needs with the available CPU capacity. A graphics card with a hardware video encoder is a conditional purchase: verify the exact card’s codecs, OBS and operating-system compatibility, and the destination’s accepted formats. A dedicated encoder appliance is a distinct professional workflow choice; YouTube’s cited appliance examples relate to specific HLS HDR workflows, not a general requirement for live streaming.
