To host a YouTube livestream giveaway, publish clear official rules before the stream, make entry free, explain exactly how and when to enter, and select and award the prize exactly as promised. You—not YouTube—are responsible for running the contest and complying with laws that apply to you and your entrants.
Plan the giveaway before scheduling your stream
Decide the mechanics first, then write them down in official rules. A viewer should be able to tell whether they are eligible, what counts as an entry, when entries close, and how the winner will be chosen and contacted.
- Name the organizer and describe the prize clearly.
- Specify who may enter, including any location or age restrictions that apply.
- Set the entry period, entry method, and a clear closing time.
- Explain how you will identify eligible entries, select the winner, and notify them.
- Set a deadline for the winner to respond and explain what happens if they do not.
- Describe what personal information you will collect and how you will use it.
YouTube says contests must be free to enter and advises creators to check local lottery laws. Do not require a purchase, paid message, or other payment as a condition of entry. Applicable federal, state, and local rules depend on where you and your entrants are, the prize, and the contest structure; YouTube’s policy is not legal advice. Read YouTube’s contest policies and guidelines.
Do not make entry conditional on actions intended to manipulate YouTube views, likes, dislikes, or subscriber counts. The contest must not misrepresent genuine engagement.

Choose a livestream setup and entry method
YouTube supports mobile, webcam, and encoder livestream workflows. Choose the method that fits your setup; the computer webcam route specifically requires a computer with a webcam. YouTube’s live-streaming guide says a channel must be verified and have had no livestream restrictions in the past 90 days to livestream. Check YouTube’s live streaming tips for current setup details.
If viewers will enter in live chat
Chat is available on YouTube watch pages, not embedded players. YouTube Help lists an operational limit of up to 11 messages per 30 seconds and 200 characters per message; platform limits can change, so check the current live-stream information before your event. Give viewers one short, consistent instruction rather than asking for a long response.
Check the stream’s audience setting and your channel status before announcing chat entry. YouTube says live chat is disabled on streams marked made for kids, so chat may not work for this entry method. See YouTube’s guidance on avoiding livestream restrictions.
If chat is not suitable
Use an entry route you can explain and administer consistently with your rules. Do not assume a third-party picker or chat-entry service is compatible or handles personal data appropriately without checking its current capabilities and privacy practices.

Publish official rules that meet YouTube’s requirements
YouTube requires official rules and says the creator is responsible for the contest: “You’re solely responsible for your contest.” Your rules should include the mechanics and eligibility terms above, plus the disclosures and privacy terms required by YouTube and applicable law.

- Provide a privacy notice that explains how personal data collected for the contest will be used, and use that data only as disclosed.
- Include any other legally required disclosures for the places and people covered by the giveaway.
Do not imply YouTube sponsors or endorses the giveaway; YouTube’s policy says not to do so without prior written consent. The policy also states: “Your contest must be free of charge to enter (don’t forget to check your local lottery laws!).” Because the legal wording depends on your circumstances, check the requirements that apply to your contest rather than copying a generic template blindly.

- Before opening entries: show or link the official rules, identify the organizer and prize, state eligibility, and explain the free entry method and closing time.
- During the stream: repeat the entry instruction and deadline clearly. If using chat, direct viewers to the YouTube watch page and keep the instruction within the message limit.
- At closing: stop accepting entries at the published time and apply the eligibility criteria consistently.
- Select and notify: use the selection and notification process in your rules. Keep enough records to administer the prize and document the outcome.
- Award the prize: follow the published claim deadline and contingency for a nonresponsive winner. Do not change the prize or process after entries close except as your rules and applicable law permit.
Collect only information needed to administer the prize, and handle it as described in your privacy notice. The organizer is responsible for conducting the contest and awarding prizes according to the official rules.
Keep the livestream running if the event needs a continuous feed
For a normal scheduled giveaway, use a live workflow that lets you present the rules, interact with viewers, and announce the result. StreamNeo is for a different use case: keeping an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube continuously, not going live from a camera. It runs in the cloud, so your computer can be off; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and the first day is free.
