To multistream, either send a separate stream from your computer to each platform or send one stream to a cloud relay that distributes it. Local streaming gives you more control but can raise your upload-bandwidth and encoding demands with each destination. A relay shifts that distribution work off your computer, but adds a service dependency and possible plan limits. Before going live, check each platform’s setup requirements, calculate the bandwidth you need, and follow each destination’s rules.
Choose how to send your stream
Send separate outputs from your computer
A local encoder setup is suited to creators who want granular control and have enough computer capacity and upload headroom. You configure an output for each destination. More outputs can mean more network traffic and encoding work, and settings may need to differ by platform.
Send one stream to a cloud relay
A relay receives one incoming stream and distributes it to multiple destinations. YouTube describes this as an option for creators who want a simpler setup, have an older or slower computer, or plan to stream to more than two channels. It reduces the creator-side fan-out burden, but you rely on the service, its supported destinations, its plan limits, and how it handles destination-specific settings. Check those details with the provider before choosing a plan. YouTube’s simulstreaming guide explains both approaches.
Understand what transcoding changes
Transcoding creates alternate feeds at different resolutions, frame rates, or bitrates. Whether viewers receive those options depends on the platform; they are not guaranteed at every destination. OBS’s explanation of transcoding covers the basic distinction. Its page is dated 2021, so do not rely on it for current platform entitlements.

Check each platform before configuring software
Requirements are destination-specific. Confirm that every account is active and in good standing, and check whether it needs a stream key and RTMP server URL. For YouTube, the channel must be verified and live streaming enabled; first-time activation can take at least 24 hours after the first request. Start activation well before a scheduled broadcast. YouTube’s guide sets out its requirements.
- Confirm live access on every destination account.
- Collect the correct server URL and stream key for each destination, using its current live dashboard or encoder setup instructions.
- Check each platform’s supported resolutions, frame rates, and ingest settings rather than assuming one configuration fits all.
- Review current platform policies and any private partner, event, or promotional agreement that could restrict simultaneous streaming.
Calculate the upload bandwidth for local outputs
When your computer sends separate outputs directly, add the target bitrates together. YouTube gives an example of a 6 Mbps stream plus a 4 Mbps stream: the combined target is 10 Mbps. For stability, YouTube recommends upload capacity about 1.5 to 2 times that combined rate—15–20 Mbps for that example. These are YouTube’s example and recommendation, not universal bitrate settings for every platform. Check each destination’s ingest guidance as well. YouTube’s simulstreaming guide

- Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
- Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
- Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
- Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
- Write down the planned bitrate for each locally transmitted output.
- Add those bitrates to get the combined target. For example, 6 Mbps + 4 Mbps = 10 Mbps.
- As a stability check, compare your sustained upload capacity with roughly 1.5–2 times the combined target. For YouTube’s 10 Mbps example, that is 15–20 Mbps.
- Test while using the real setup, including audio and video with typical movement, rather than relying only on an idle speed test.
- During the broadcast, watch each platform’s stream-health indicators and adjust if it reports problems.
A speed-test result does not guarantee sustained capacity: other devices and activity on a shared connection can affect performance. Test under realistic conditions and leave headroom.
What changes with a relay?
A relay takes one incoming feed and distributes copies using its own infrastructure, so adding destinations does not add a separate creator-side upload for every destination. Restream says its minimum bandwidth is 10 Mbps and recommends 25 Mbps or higher, especially for Full HD. Those are Restream’s own recommendations, published July 15, 2024—not a neutral standard or a guarantee for every relay. Restream’s bandwidth guidance

Follow Twitch’s simulcasting conditions
Twitch’s Terms of Service allow simultaneous streaming to another live platform only if you satisfy the listed conditions. Twitch requires the experience for its viewers to be at least as good as on the other platforms, including your engagement with the Twitch community. Do not direct Twitch viewers away to the concurrent stream, and do not use third-party services to combine activity from other platforms into the Twitch stream, such as merged chat. Read the current Twitch Terms of Service before broadcasting.
Twitch’s simulcasting FAQ distinguishes identifying that you are present elsewhere from actively encouraging viewers to leave Twitch. The FAQ also says the guidelines apply unless you have an agreement requiring exclusivity. Public platform rules cannot settle obligations in a private partner, event, or promotional contract; read your own agreement.

Compare the approaches
| Approach | Works well when | Main trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Local encoder with separate outputs | You want granular control and have adequate computer capacity and upload headroom. | More outputs can increase upload demand and encoding load. Destination settings may differ, and transcoding availability depends on the platform. |
| Cloud relay | You want a simpler distribution setup, have a less capable computer, or plan to reach more than two destinations. | You depend on a service and its supported destinations, settings, and plan limits. Check current costs and features with the provider. |
YouTube describes the control-versus-simplicity trade-off in its simulstreaming guide. Restream also documents an OBS connection workflow in its OBS multistreaming guide; its workflow describes that service, not every relay.

For a YouTube channel that should stay live with uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate option from multistream relays: it keeps a YouTube stream running from the cloud, rather than sending a live camera or desktop feed to several destinations.
