Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →There is no single best OBS preset for every YouTube live stream. Choose a resolution and frame rate your computer can render and encode, then set a bitrate your upload connection can sustain. For a dependable starting point, use CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, SDR Rec. 709 at 8-bit, and the bitrate YouTube recommends for your codec and output. Test with realistic movement and audio before going live.
Start with the quality your computer and connection can sustain
Higher resolution adds detail; a higher frame rate makes motion look smoother. Both increase the work demanded of your computer and, in most setups, the upload bitrate required. Pick your output target before tuning bitrate. Fast-motion gaming may benefit from 60 fps, while a talk, interview, or documentary discussion may be fine at 30 fps. If OBS cannot maintain 60 fps, OBS recommends trying 30 fps.
In OBS, open Settings → Video. Base (Canvas) Resolution is the layout area for your sources; Output (Scaled) Resolution is the size sent to YouTube. Set the output to your intended delivery resolution, then choose the common FPS value you want to stream at. If performance is unstable, reduce the output resolution or frame rate rather than keeping a demanding target that the system cannot deliver reliably. These labels and available choices can vary by OBS version.
Choose an encoder and codec
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. The available choices in OBS depend on your computer, installed hardware, and encoder support; do not assume every machine exposes all three codecs. YouTube’s recommended video bitrates also differ by codec, so select the codec before setting bitrate.

OBS supports hardware and software encoding. Hardware encoding often reduces CPU load, but quality and performance depend on the particular encoder and system. Test the actual computer and scene rather than assuming one type is always better. OBS’s overview generally recommends leaving defaults alone unless you have a reason to change them; Advanced output mode is useful when you need independent stream and recording controls.
Set OBS output mode, rate control, keyframes, and bitrate
- Open Settings → Output. If you need independent stream and recording controls, select Advanced output mode. Exact labels vary with OBS version and selected encoder.
- Under the streaming output, choose an available encoder and set rate control to CBR.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Enter the video bitrate for your selected resolution, frame rate, and codec from the YouTube recommendations below. These are recommended YouTube ingestion targets, not a guarantee that your network can sustain them.
The figures below are YouTube’s recommended video ingestion bitrates, in Mbps, on its official live encoder settings page accessed October 3, 2026. AV1 and H.265 share the listed target. YouTube also publishes minimum ranges; these recommendations should not be mistaken for hard minimums.

| Output resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
For example, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p60 using H.264 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60 using AV1 or H.265. That is a platform target, not evidence that a particular internet connection can hold it. If your upload cannot reliably sustain the selected target, lower the bitrate and, if needed, reduce resolution or frame rate. A speed-test peak does not establish sustained streaming capacity, especially on a shared or variable connection.
Configure audio and color
Audio
YouTube lists 128 kbps for stereo audio. Use that as a platform-specific baseline, and verify that OBS is capturing the intended microphone and desktop mix. Check levels for clipping and listen for sync problems in a test stream; the right mixer layout depends on your sources, so there is no universal mixer configuration.

SDR color
For a standard dynamic range stream, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit color, matching YouTube’s listed SDR guidance. In OBS, review the color settings under Settings → Advanced and ensure the output matches the workflow rather than changing color options as a generic quality boost.
HDR
HDR is a separate workflow, not a toggle that automatically improves a stream. YouTube recommends H.265 for HDR in the cited guidance and says AV1 is not supported for HDR under those settings. Confirm that the entire capture, encoder, and output chain supports your intended HDR format before choosing it. YouTube also notes that 4K/2160p live streams do not offer its low-latency optimization option.

Connect OBS to YouTube and test before the event
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and obtain its stream key from the live control room. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube if available, and connect your account or enter the stream key according to the displayed controls. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Before starting the event, run a test with movement and audio similar to the real broadcast. YouTube specifically advises testing with comparable video movement and sound.
- Check the stream preview for the intended resolution, readable detail, smooth motion, correct audio source, clean levels, and audio-video sync. Watch YouTube’s stream health messages during the test and broadcast.
- If you use materially different setups, save separate OBS profiles so you can switch between a conservative configuration and a higher-resolution one without rebuilding every setting. OBS profiles save stream, video, and output settings.
Allow for the fact that the stream viewers receive may not immediately show every expected quality option. Check OBS’s actual output and YouTube’s stream health and ingest settings; do not assume a fixed processing delay. YouTube transcodes live streams, but that does not guarantee every viewer’s network or device will play a high-bitrate rendition smoothly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot the symptom you actually see
| Symptom | Likely area to investigate | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| OBS reports encoding lag | The encoder cannot keep up with the selected output and workload. | Try a lighter encoder preset or an available hardware encoder, then reduce output resolution or frame rate if needed. Encoder capabilities vary by system. |
| OBS reports rendering lag or an overloaded GPU | OBS scene compositing may be competing with a game or other GPU-heavy work. | Simplify demanding scenes and reduce output demands. Check whether another GPU workload is consuming the resources OBS needs. |
| Dropped frames or unstable ingest | Upload capacity or connection stability, rather than only CPU encoding, may be the issue. | Check available sustained upload capacity and choose a bitrate the connection can hold. If necessary, lower bitrate and output demands; do not treat a CPU or encoder change as the sole fix for a network problem. |
| Viewers report buffering, but OBS shows no dropped frames | Viewer device and network conditions or delivery behavior may be involved. | Consider a lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate if broader accessibility matters. Transcoding does not ensure smooth playback on every viewer’s connection. |
| The stream appears capped at a lower resolution | The outgoing source settings, ingest, or YouTube processing may not match expectations. | Confirm OBS’s Output (Scaled) Resolution and YouTube ingest health. Test again and check processing behavior without assuming a specific propagation time. |
OBS’s performance guidance distinguishes encoding and rendering problems; its buffering guidance addresses connection symptoms. Match the change to the symptom instead of lowering unrelated settings at random.

Use YouTube’s live-stream rules as part of the setup
Technical quality does not grant rights to the material you broadcast. Use footage, music, images, and other material you own or are licensed to use, and check the applicable YouTube rules before streaming. Reusing documentary clips or background music without permission can create copyright problems even when the OBS settings are correct. A stream that runs continuously still needs compliant content and channel practices; no bitrate, codec, or keyframe choice changes that.
