For a YouTube Live stream sent from OBS, enable Settings → Advanced → Network → Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta). YouTube does not automatically adjust the bitrate your encoder sends: you set that bitrate in OBS. OBS’s option can lower it when the connection is congested, trading picture quality for fewer dropped frames.
What “automatic bitrate” means for YouTube Live
There are two different automatic behaviors. YouTube Live Control Room detects encoder settings, including resolution and frame rate by default; that detection does not configure the encoder’s outgoing bitrate. OBS’s dynamic bitrate option changes the sending bitrate when it detects congestion.
| Behavior | What changes automatically | Where it is controlled | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube’s encoder-setting detection | Detection of encoder settings, including resolution and frame rate by default | YouTube Live Control Room and the encoder connection | You still configure the outgoing bitrate in OBS. YouTube’s encoder recommendations |
| OBS dynamic bitrate | Sending bitrate can decrease when OBS detects network congestion | OBS Settings → Advanced → Network | Picture quality can fall; the setting does not fix the underlying connection. Sudden congestion may also add viewer delay. OBS troubleshooting and OBS interface text |
Set up OBS and YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Create or choose a stream, then copy its stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not show it on screen or include it in screenshots. YouTube’s encoder setup steps
- Connect OBS to the stream. Choose the YouTube service in OBS or enter the stream URL and key in its stream settings. Select your resolution, frame rate, codec, and a starting bitrate based on YouTube’s recommendations for that profile.
- Set the encoder output. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds. Codec, resolution, and frame rate affect the recommended bitrate; the table below gives two 1080p60 examples. YouTube’s encoder settings
- Enable dynamic bitrate in OBS. Open Settings → Advanced → Network and check Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta). Select Apply or OK if shown. The exact menu wording can vary by OBS release; consult the current OBS troubleshooting instructions if you do not see it.
- Test before going live. Start streaming from OBS and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Check motion, picture, and audio before selecting Go live. Test with representative content and monitor stream health during the event. YouTube encoder setup · YouTube streaming tips
Choose a starting bitrate and check upload capacity
YouTube’s current encoder table lists these recommendations for 1080p at 60 frames per second. They are YouTube guidance, not guarantees of a stable stream; the suitable setting depends on the complete stream profile and connection.
| 1080p60 codec | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth as headroom rather than using the entire measured upload capacity for the stream. Run an upload speed test and test the actual OBS profile before an important broadcast; YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” YouTube streaming tips · YouTube encoder settings

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What dynamic bitrate can—and cannot—do
OBS describes the feature this way: “This will lower the bitrate when your connection cannot keep up, rather than dropping frames.” The trade-off is lower video quality while the bitrate is reduced. OBS’s interface text also notes that sudden congestion can increase viewer delay and that restoring the bitrate may take up to a few minutes. OBS troubleshooting · OBS interface text
It is a fallback for congestion, not a repair for weak or unreliable internet. It does not promise to switch your resolution automatically or preserve the same image quality. The option is documented as currently supporting RTMP only. YouTube recommends RTMPS in its encoder workflow, so verify protocol compatibility in your OBS version and service configuration before relying on this feature. Troubleshoot bitrate and connection problems
- Frames drop when the stream starts. Check upload capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Test at the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate; if the connection cannot sustain the profile, lower the configured bitrate or choose a less demanding profile.
- Dynamic bitrate is missing or unavailable. Check OBS’s current Settings → Advanced → Network instructions and confirm the stream protocol. OBS documents the feature for RTMP; YouTube’s encoder workflow recommends RTMPS, so compatibility may depend on the configuration.
- The stream stays connected but looks worse during congestion. That is the expected quality trade-off when OBS lowers bitrate. Stabilize the connection or choose a bitrate the connection can sustain; the feature cannot remove the underlying congestion.
- The stream does not appear in Live Control Room. Confirm OBS has the right stream URL and key, and wait for the preview before clicking Go live. If the key has been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- There is extra viewer delay after a connection problem. OBS notes that sudden congestion can increase delay and that bitrate recovery may take a few minutes. Monitor stream health and test the setup ahead of the event.
Or let it run in the cloud
OBS is the right route when you want to manage an encoder and network settings yourself. For a pre-recorded YouTube channel stream that should continue without a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera.
