How to Add Overlays and Alerts to OBS for YouTube Live

Add YouTube Live alerts to an OBS scene with a provider URL and Browser source, then layer optional artwork and test the setup.

To add alerts to OBS for a YouTube Live broadcast, configure an alert overlay with a third-party provider, then add its URL to your OBS scene as a Browser source. OBS does not create alerts itself, and the documented setup does not require an alerts plugin. You can add static artwork and labels separately with Image and Text sources.

What you need

  • OBS Studio and a scene for your YouTube broadcast.
  • An alert provider account connected to the streaming account you intend to use.
  • The provider’s alert overlay URL, sometimes labelled Overlay URL, Widget URL, or Alert URL.

OBS lists Streamlabs, StreamElements, NerdOrDie, and OWN3D Pro as provider examples. These examples are not a current ranking, and OBS’s setup guide does not confirm each provider’s current YouTube event support. Check the provider’s own current YouTube documentation for the specific events you want to display, such as the notifications available for your channel.

Set up alerts in OBS

  1. Choose and connect an alert provider. Sign in on the provider’s website and connect the streaming account. Check its current instructions and YouTube event support before relying on a particular alert.
  2. Choose the alerts and their appearance on the provider’s site. Provider settings commonly let you choose the alert type, image, and sound. Save the configuration there; OBS is used to place and size the resulting overlay in your scene.
  3. Copy the alert overlay URL. Use the URL supplied for the alert overlay or widget. Treat it as private if the provider warns that anyone with the link can access or modify the overlay.
  4. Add a Browser source to the scene. In OBS, select the scene, find Sources, select the + button, then choose Browser. Name the source if prompted, paste the provider URL into the URL field, set a width and height suited to your canvas, and save. Browser Source is available in official OBS packages for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
  5. Position and test it. Preview the scene, select the alert source, and resize or move it to the intended location. Use the provider’s test-alert control, if available, to check the visual and sound in OBS before going live. Confirm that the alert is not obscured by another source and that its dimensions fit the scene.
  6. Add optional static graphics or labels. In Sources, select + and add an Image source for artwork or a Text source for labels. Arrange the source list so foreground elements sit above the background: sources higher in the list appear over those below. Position and resize items in the preview or use Edit Transform.

Choose an alert provider carefully

There is no provider winner established by the OBS documentation. Compare providers against the particular alerts and layout you need, and verify current details directly with each provider.

  • Does the provider currently support the YouTube events you want to show?
  • Can you customize alert images and sounds to match the broadcast?
  • Can it combine alerts with other widgets you need? OBS specifically notes that StreamElements can combine widgets such as alerts and chat in one overlay; this does not establish that other providers cannot.
  • Are its current account connection steps, pricing, and terms acceptable?

Provider features and commercial terms can change. Do not assume that a provider’s support for another streaming platform means it supports the same events on YouTube.

Troubleshooting

The alert does not appear

  • Check that the Browser source contains the complete, current URL copied from the provider.
  • Confirm that the correct scene is selected and the source is visible in the Sources list.
  • Use the provider’s test function, if available, and verify that the relevant YouTube event is supported and configured on the provider’s site.
  • Check the source’s position and dimensions; it may be off-canvas or hidden behind another source.

The alert appears in the wrong place or at the wrong size

Adjust the Browser source dimensions in its properties, then resize and position it in the OBS preview or with Edit Transform. Check the scene’s source order if another element covers it.

The alert looks stale or stops updating

OBS Browser Source properties include refresh options and custom frame rate. Leave these at their defaults unless the provider’s directions or a specific troubleshooting need calls for a change. If you do adjust them, test the scene again before the broadcast.

The alert design or sound is wrong

Change the alert type, image, or sound on the provider’s website, then test the overlay again in OBS. OBS places the provider’s overlay; it is not where the provider’s alert design is configured.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a documentary channel that needs a prerecorded programme to repeat as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate option from OBS alerts: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed or provide alerts for an OBS scene.
