Use 16:9 for a regular widescreen YouTube upload and 9:16 for the familiar full-screen vertical Shorts look. In your editor, change the project sequence or canvas to the target ratio, then crop and reposition the footage—or preserve the whole image with a background treatment. Cropping can cut off action; fitting the whole image into a different shape can leave space around it. There is no way to make a wide shot fill a tall frame without changing how some of its image is presented.
Choose the right frame shape
Aspect ratio describes the frame’s width in relation to its height. Resolution describes its pixel dimensions. They are related but not interchangeable: a 9:16 video can be exported at different resolutions while retaining the same shape.
| Use | Frame ratio | Example dimensions |
|---|---|---|
| Regular widescreen YouTube upload | 16:9 | 1920 × 1080 pixels for 1080p HD, listed by YouTube Help and shown as an Adobe Premiere HD example in Adobe Premiere Help. |
| Full-screen vertical Shorts presentation | 9:16 | 1080 × 1920 pixels, described as an ideal Shorts size by CapCut; this is CapCut’s recommendation, not a YouTube requirement. |
| Square or another vertical shape | 1:1 or another suitable ratio | No single required resolution established here. |
YouTube says the standard aspect ratio for its computer player is 16:9, while its player adapts to videos with other ratios and viewer devices. YouTube advises against adding black bars or padding directly into the video; the player can adapt the presentation and may add padding to vertical videos in computer browsers. See YouTube’s resolution and aspect-ratio guidance.
For standard channels, YouTube categorizes square or vertical uploads made on or after October 15, 2024, that are no longer than three minutes as Shorts. A square video can qualify; 9:16 is the common vertical target, not the only eligible shape. YouTube notes different timing for Official Artist Channels, so check its current Shorts eligibility guidance if that applies to your channel.

Change the ratio without losing important content
1. Set the output sequence or canvas
Start by choosing the final frame shape—16:9 for a standard widescreen upload or 9:16 for a vertical Short—before making detailed framing adjustments. If you are using Adobe Premiere, one documented option is to right-click the sequence in the Project panel and choose Sequence > Auto Reframe Sequence, then select a target aspect ratio. Adobe’s Auto Reframe guide describes the workflow and tracking choices.
In CapCut desktop, its documented workflow is to import the video, select the clip, open Basic > Auto reframe, and choose 9:16. Then review the framing and set the export options. Software labels can change between versions; if you do not see the exact wording, look for sequence, canvas, aspect ratio, or auto-reframe controls. See CapCut’s Shorts guide.

Check that the source is being interpreted correctly before changing the frame. Adobe distinguishes frame ratio from pixel aspect ratio; if footage looks unnaturally stretched, an incorrect pixel-ratio interpretation may be the problem rather than the sequence shape. Adobe explains the distinction in Premiere Help.
2. Choose how the source fits
| Method | What it does | Best fit and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Crop or fill | Enlarges and repositions the footage until it fills the new frame. | Useful when a full-screen result matters most. It trims the source edges, so subjects, hands, signs, captions, or other details near the edge can disappear. |
| Fit or preserve | Keeps the entire source image visible within the new frame. | Useful when every part of the original composition matters. Unused space may remain, and the main image may appear smaller. |
| Background fill | Preserves the source image and uses a solid color, blur, or custom image to fill the extra canvas. | A designed alternative to empty space or bars. The footage itself may still look smaller than a cropped full-screen version. CapCut documents background options in its online video resizer. |
| Auto Reframe | Automatically shifts a crop to follow a detected subject. | A useful starting point for moving footage, not a guarantee that every shot will be framed correctly. Review and correct it manually. |
Choose shot by shot if the subject or camera movement changes. Adobe’s Auto Reframe documentation distinguishes tracking behavior for slower movement, such as a talking head, and faster movement, such as sports. For either automatic or manual framing, inspect the entire shot rather than judging only its first frame.

3. Reposition and inspect the frame
- Keep faces and the main action inside the new crop throughout the shot.
- Check text, hands, products, signs, and other details close to the original frame edges.
- If cropping hides important content, use a fit or background-fill treatment rather than stretching the image.
- Do not stretch footage non-proportionally to force it into the new shape; that distorts people and objects.
- Preview the result at a phone-sized display for vertical video and in the intended player for a regular upload.
4. Export and check the rendered file
Export at dimensions that match the selected frame shape and at a suitable resolution for your source and delivery. For reference, YouTube lists 1920 × 1080 for 16:9 1080p; CapCut calls 1080 × 1920 ideal for Shorts. These are examples and recommendations, not a universal rule for every project. The sources cited here do not establish one best frame rate or codec for all footage and destinations, so use a setting appropriate to your source and editing workflow.
Watch the exported file from beginning to end. Confirm the subject stays visible during movement, text remains readable, the image is not stretched, and no unintended bars were baked into the video. A correct-looking editor preview does not replace checking the rendered file.

Common framing problems and fixes
The crop cuts off a face or important action
Reposition the crop and inspect the whole shot. If the subject moves beyond the area a fixed crop can cover, try Auto Reframe as a starting point and correct missed movement manually. If keeping every edge is more important than filling the screen, fit the source and use a background fill.
The vertical version looks too small
That is the trade-off when the complete wide image is fitted inside a tall frame. Enlarge and crop only if the edges are expendable; otherwise use a deliberate background treatment to make the surrounding space look intentional.

The image looks stretched or distorted
Do not force width and height independently. Preserve the image proportions and use crop, fit, repositioning, or a background treatment. If the source already looks distorted, check its pixel-aspect interpretation as well as the project’s frame ratio.
Black bars appear in the upload
Check whether bars were added to the exported image itself. YouTube advises against baking padding or black bars into standard uploads because the player adapts to different video ratios and devices. Remove unintended bars in the edit; use a designed background only when it is part of the intended composition.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your finished video is meant to play continuously as a YouTube live stream, editing its aspect ratio and keeping a live broadcast running are separate jobs. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream can keep running with your computer off. Each slot streams uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
Monthly: $9.99 per month.
