To turn your own long YouTube video into a highlight, open it in YouTube Studio, choose Clips and Shorts → Create clip or Short, select the moment from the transcript or set its start and end times, then preview and create a draft. Use a Short when you want a new vertical upload; use a video clip when you want a segment with an optional intro or outro.
Make a highlight from your video in YouTube Studio

Open YouTube Studio → Content → Videos, then select the uploaded video you want to use.

In the video’s left menu, select Clips and Shorts, then choose Create clip or Short.

Choose Short or Video clip, depending on the kind of upload you want to make.

Set the segment by selecting transcript text and confirming it, or by entering start and end times on the timeline. If YouTube offers AI suggestions or a generated outline, use them to find candidate moments, then check and adjust the selection yourself.

If you chose Short, preview it. Review any automatic captions and adjust their style or position, or disable them if appropriate. Create a draft and finish the usual upload flow.

If you chose video clip, you can add an eligible intro or outro, then create a draft and finish uploading. YouTube recommends linking the source video in the clip description.

The transcript selection is used for the Short’s auto-generated captions. Shorts made with this tool are automatically associated with the source as a related video, except when the Short is private, unlisted or Made for Kids. See YouTube Help for the Studio workflow and account-specific details.

Choose a moment that works on its own
A good highlight has one clear reason to watch: a strong hook, a funny or exciting exchange, a useful explanation, one actionable tutorial step, or a striking visual demonstration. Remove setup the viewer does not need, but keep enough context for the moment to make sense without the full video.

Interview or podcast: Retain the question or setup that makes the answer understandable.

Visual footage: Check whether a vertical crop keeps the essential subject in frame.

YouTube’s creator guidance recommends considering a vertical 9:16 crop, captions or text overlays when useful, and making a Short enjoyable as a standalone piece even if it points viewers to the longer video. These are editorial choices, not requirements for every clip. YouTube’s April 16, 2025 creator guidance discusses adapting long-form content for Shorts.

Short, video clip, or viewer-facing Clip?
YouTube uses similar language for two different outcomes. Decide whether you want a new upload from your own video or a loop attached to the source video’s watch page.

The 5-to-60-second range is YouTube Help’s stated duration for viewer-facing Clips; it is not a recommended or universal length for Shorts. See YouTube Help’s Clips guidance.

If AI suggestions are missing
AI suggestions and outlines are conditional, not guaranteed in every account. YouTube lists Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States, and English, French, German, Hindi, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish, for these AI features. If the option is absent, use transcript selection or enter timestamps manually.

If you need detailed edits
YouTube has announced Shorts editor controls for precise timing, rearranging or deleting clips, timed text and music, and previewing. Rollout and availability can vary. YouTube Create is a separate phone-based route described by YouTube for Artists as a free app for editing Shorts and videos, with timeline adjustments and voiceover. Neither is required for the Studio transcript-and-timestamp workflow. YouTube’s creator guidance also recognizes editing software as an option for isolating and cropping moments, but features and prices vary by product.
