To switch scenes smoothly in OBS Studio, choose a transition and set its duration, prepare the next scene in Studio Mode, then take it live with the Transition button, a Quick Transition, or a hotkey. Rehearse the full change before streaming. For animated stingers, set the cut point carefully; if you use a track matte, put the stinger and matte in one combined file to avoid the sync problem OBS identifies with separate files.
Choose a transition that suits the moment
OBS Studio includes Cut and Fade transitions from the start. Its Scene Transitions controls let you add other styles, including Swipe, Slide, Fade to color, and Luma Wipe, and adjust the duration. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
- Cut: Switches immediately. It can work well when a quick change suits the content.
- Fade: Makes a restrained transition or brief visual pause.
- Swipe, Slide, Fade to color, or Luma Wipe: Adds a more prominent visual change when that style fits the stream.
There is no universal duration that guarantees a smooth result. Choose a duration for the moment, then preview or record a test with your actual scenes.
Prepare the next scene without showing edits to viewers
Studio Mode separates the scene currently live from the scene you are preparing. Check and arrange the next scene in the edit view; viewers continue seeing the live scene until you take the change.

- In OBS, enable Studio Mode from the controls.

- When it is ready, use Transition, a configured Quick Transition, or an assigned hotkey to put it on air.
For an overview of Studio Mode and transition controls, see the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Set a scene-switch hotkey
A hotkey makes a scene change repeatable without reaching for the mouse. OBS supports hotkeys for switching to a specific scene. In OBS, open Settings > Hotkeys, find the scene-switch action, and assign a key combination. Choose keys that are easy to reach but do not conflict with controls in the game or application you capture.

Set up a stinger transition
A stinger plays video over a scene change. Its cut point determines when OBS switches from the outgoing scene to the incoming one; OBS lets you specify that point in frames or milliseconds. With a track matte, the animation’s black areas represent the outgoing scene, white areas the incoming scene, and intermediate gray values allow a blend. Follow the OBS Track Matte Stinger Transitions guide.

Use one file for a track matte
OBS warns that separate stinger and matte files cannot be guaranteed to decode in sync. Its documented approaches place the stinger and matte in one file, either side-by-side or stacked vertically.
| Layout | Example dimensions when each portion is 1920Ă—1080 |
|---|---|
| Side-by-side | 3840Ă—1080 |
| Stacked vertically | 1920Ă—2160 |
These dimensions are OBS examples for those source dimensions, not requirements for every stinger. Elgato’s Stinger Transitions guide describes WEBM as suitable for streaming software because it supports transparency, calls 1920Ă—1080 a common streaming resolution, and explains cut timing in frames or milliseconds. Confirm the specific software and asset requirements before exporting.

Rehearse and troubleshoot the complete change
Before going live, test each relevant scene change from its actual trigger through to the destination scene. Check the transition style and duration, audio behavior, and destination sources. Documentation explains the controls but does not establish a universally smooth duration or guarantee performance on every computer.
| Symptom | What to check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Viewers see edits before the change | Whether you are preparing the target in Studio Mode’s edit view or changing the live scene directly. | Prepare the target in the edit view, verify it there, then send it live with Transition, a Quick Transition, or its hotkey. |
| The wrong scene appears after a hotkey press | Whether the assigned key conflicts with a game or captured application, or is mapped to a different scene. | Review the scene assignment in Settings > Hotkeys, choose a non-conflicting combination, and test it before going live. |
| A stinger cut feels mistimed | The configured cut point, in frames or milliseconds, and how it aligns with the animation. | Adjust the cut point and preview or record the transition again. |
| A track-matte stinger looks out of sync | Whether the stinger and matte are separate files. | Use a single file with the elements side-by-side or stacked, following the OBS layout guidance. |
| A scene change looks abrupt or lingers too long | Whether the selected transition and its duration fit the moment. | Try a different transition or adjust its duration, then test with the actual scenes; no one duration suits every stream. |
Or let it run in the cloud
Switching scenes is for live production; if your goal is instead to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo runs that stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; your uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
