How to Add Captions to Videos Automatically With AI

Generate captions in the editor or platform that fits your video, then review wording and timing before you publish. Here are the steps for YouTube, Premiere Pro, and CapCut.

To add captions automatically, use the caption tool in the platform or editor where your video lives: YouTube Studio for an uploaded YouTube video, YouTube Create for a short mobile project, or Premiere Pro and CapCut while editing. Choose the spoken language, generate captions, then correct the transcript and timing before publishing or exporting. AI captions are a draft, not a verified transcript.

Choose a workflow that matches your video

Where you are working Use Important limit or consideration
A video already uploaded to YouTube YouTube Studio Captions may take time to process; language support and audio conditions affect availability.
A short mobile video project YouTube Create Caption generation is limited to clips no longer than 60 seconds. YouTube lists Android phones with at least 4 GB of RAM and iPhone XR or later running iOS 17 or later as supported requirements.
A desktop editing timeline Adobe Premiere Pro Offers transcript-based caption tracks and controls for caption format, length, duration, and gaps.
A web, desktop, or mobile editing project CapCut Core auto-caption recognition is documented across these platforms; advanced tools and exports may vary by region, platform, and app version.

Choose based on the deliverable as well as convenience. A platform caption track, editable timeline captions, translated tracks, an SRT file, and text burned into the image are different outputs. Confirm that your current app version can produce the format you need.

Add captions in YouTube Studio

Use this route for an uploaded YouTube video when you want to review or correct its caption track in YouTube Studio.

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. Open Subtitles from the left menu.
  3. Select the video you want to caption.
  4. When automatic captions are available, open that caption track and review the text. Edit or remove words that were transcribed incorrectly, then save your changes.

Captions may not appear immediately after upload; YouTube says processing time depends on audio complexity. Its automatic-caption support is language-dependent. Unsupported language, poor sound, long silence, overlapping speakers, or multiple languages spoken at once can prevent captions from appearing or reduce their reliability. Consult YouTube’s automatic captions help page for the current supported-language list and troubleshooting guidance.

Live stream captions are a separate case

YouTube’s current help page describes automatic live captions as English-only and subject to conditions including normal latency, the absence of professional captions, rollout availability, and channel-level constraints. Live captions do not remain after the stream ends; YouTube generates new automatic captions for the video-on-demand version. Because availability and eligibility can change, check the current YouTube guidance before planning a live workflow.

Generate captions in YouTube Create

YouTube Create is a straightforward option for short clips edited on a supported phone.

Review AI captions before publishing

Speech recognition can mishear accents, dialects, names, technical terms, or words obscured by background sound. YouTube explicitly advises creators: “Always review automatic captions and edit any parts that haven’t been properly transcribed.” Review is especially important for documentary narration, where an incorrect name, date, quotation, or place can change the meaning.

Clearer source audio can make speech easier to recognize. If you are recording new footage, improving microphone placement and reducing background noise may help. You do not need a new microphone to caption a video you already have.

Troubleshoot missing or inaccurate captions

What you see Likely cause What to do
No automatic captions on a YouTube upload Processing is incomplete, the spoken language is unsupported, or the audio has poor sound, long silence, overlapping speech, or simultaneous languages. Allow processing time, check YouTube’s supported-language list, and inspect the audio. If captions remain unavailable, use a supported editor workflow and add or export captions there.
Words are wrong or missing Noise, accent or dialect differences, mispronunciation, music, or speaker overlap can confuse speech recognition. Correct the transcript manually and, for future recordings, improve the source audio where practical.
YouTube Create will not generate captions The clip may exceed 60 seconds, or the device may not meet the listed requirements. Use a clip within the limit or caption it in YouTube Studio, Premiere Pro, or CapCut. Check the current device requirements in YouTube Create help.
Live captions are unavailable YouTube’s automatic live-caption conditions or rollout eligibility may not be met. Check the current YouTube live-caption requirements. Remember that the live caption track does not persist after the stream; the VOD receives newly generated captions.
An export lacks the caption file or expected styling The chosen workflow may create a platform track, an editable track, or burned-in text rather than the file or rendering you expected. Before export, confirm the current app’s output options and whether captions need to be embedded, burned into the picture, or delivered separately as a caption file.

Keep a captioned video available on YouTube

Adding captions improves access to a video, but it does not by itself keep a channel live. If your separate goal is to play uploaded videos as a continuous YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, nothing has to stay on at home. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot regardless of quality, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month.
