For clearer screen-recording narration in OBS Studio, add only the microphone filters that solve a problem you can hear: start with gentle noise suppression for steady background hiss or fan noise, use a gate or expander if room noise is distracting during pauses, and add compression and a limiter if speech peaks vary or get too loud. Make a short test recording and adjust by listening; there is no universal filter preset.

Where to add microphone filters in OBS

  1. In OBS, find the microphone source in the Audio Mixer.
  2. Open that source’s audio filters using its filter control, then add filters to the microphone source rather than applying them indiscriminately to desktop audio.
  3. Record a short sample of normal narration, including a quiet phrase, a pause, and a louder phrase. Listen back while changing one control at a time.

OBS’s filter documentation covers Windows, macOS, and Linux. The documented defaults below are software starting references, not a recommended preset for every voice, microphone, or room. The official filter pages were dated January 11–12, 2022; labels and interface details may differ in newer OBS versions. See the OBS Project Filters Guide.

Choose filters by the problem you hear

Noise suppression for steady background noise

Use suppression for mild, fairly constant noise such as computer-fan sound or white noise. The OBS Project says the filter can reduce mild background noise, but it is generally not effective in a loud room. In OBS’s Noise Suppression Filter, RNNoise is the default method described as higher quality and more CPU-intensive than Speex. Speex provides a suppression-level control. Start gently: stronger suppression may remove more noise, but can also distort your voice. Record and listen before increasing it.

A gate when noise is most noticeable in pauses

A noise gate cuts off sound when you are not speaking. It can quiet pauses, but a threshold set too aggressively may clip quiet words or the ends of phrases. OBS documents these gate defaults: close threshold −32 dB, open threshold −26 dB, attack 25 ms, hold 200 ms, and release 150 ms. Treat them as defaults only. In the OBS Noise Gate documentation, the practical guidance is to set the close threshold above the background-noise level and the open threshold slightly below the voice input. Tune while testing your quietest speech.

An expander for a less abrupt reduction

An expander reduces quieter sounds rather than simply cutting them off, and its adjustable ratio can make the transition sound smoother than a fixed gate. OBS recommends RMS detection and describes 4:1 as a possible balance, not a universal setting. Adjust the threshold so pauses become quieter without suppressing soft speech. Compare the sound of phrase endings and pauses in a test recording. See the OBS Expander Filter documentation.

Compression for uneven speech peaks

A compressor reduces louder microphone peaks, helping control delivery that varies in volume. OBS says it is typically placed at or near the beginning of the filter chain. Its documented defaults are a −18 dB threshold and 10:1 ratio; these are product defaults, not personalized recommendations. If compression makes the voice sound as though its level is shifting unnaturally, reassess the settings rather than assuming more compression is better. The OBS Compressor Filter documentation also explains sidechain ducking: a compressor on desktop audio can use the microphone as its sidechain source to lower desktop sound while you speak. Its documented example uses a 32:1 ratio, −36 dB threshold, 100 ms attack, and 600 ms release. That is an example for ducking desktop audio, not a microphone-voice preset.

  • Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring

A limiter to cap the final peaks

A limiter prevents output from exceeding its threshold. Put it last in the microphone filter chain so it can cap peaks after other processing. OBS’s limiter defaults are a −6 dB threshold and 60 ms release; adjust only after listening for peaks and abrupt level changes. See the OBS Limiter documentation.

Build and tune a practical filter chain

  1. Start with the unprocessed recording. Listen for the specific issue: steady hiss, noise only in pauses, inconsistent loudness, or peaks that need a ceiling.
  2. Add suppression only if the noise is mild and steady. Begin conservatively and compare a recording with and without it. If the voice sounds watery, thin, or otherwise damaged, reduce the suppression or remove it; a loud room may need a quieter recording environment rather than stronger filtering.
  3. Choose a gate or expander for pauses, not automatically both. With a gate, set its close point above the noise floor and its open point just below your speaking level. With an expander, tune its threshold and ratio so quiet sounds are reduced more smoothly. Keep soft syllables and phrase endings intact.
  4. Add compression if loud phrases are substantially louder than ordinary speech. Adjust while monitoring both normal and emphatic delivery. Listen for pumping or abrupt changes rather than targeting OBS’s default ratio as a required value.
  5. Put a limiter last if you need a final peak ceiling. Check the loudest line in the test recording and make sure the limiter is not being driven constantly.
  6. Record again after each change. A live meter can help show level changes, but the recording tells you whether speech remains natural and intelligible.

The useful order depends on the problem and the way the filters interact. OBS describes compression as typically near the beginning and the limiter as last; suppression and gate or expander should be judged by the actual noise and speech in the recording. Do not add every available filter just because it exists.

Common problems and fixes

  • Voice sounds distorted after suppression: reduce the suppression strength or remove the filter. Stronger suppression can affect the voice, and suppression is intended for mild noise.
  • Quiet words vanish at the start or end: lower the gate’s open threshold or adjust its timing; alternatively, use an expander tuned for a smoother transition. Test soft words and phrase tails.
  • Noise remains audible between sentences: if it is steady and mild, try gentle suppression. If the main issue is silence between phrases, tune a gate or expander against the room noise instead of increasing suppression without limit.
  • Speech level sounds as if it pumps: revisit the compressor settings and listen to both ordinary and loud phrases. The documented default ratio is not a target for every microphone.
  • Peaks still feel uncontrolled: verify that the limiter is last, then record a louder sample and adjust its threshold cautiously. A limiter caps output; it does not correct every level problem earlier in the chain.
  • Filters do not make a loud room clean: OBS documents suppression as useful for mild noise, not as a reliable fix for a loud environment. Reduce the noise at its source where possible and make another test recording.
