Choose OBS if you want control over capture sources, audio, and recording output. Choose Loom if you want to quickly record your screen and camera, then share and review the video through a hosted library. Neither is a universal winner: the right fit depends on how you record, share, and review, plus what your computer can handle.

How to record your screen with OBS
OBS is a configurable desktop recorder built around scenes and sources. A scene is the composition you record; sources are the display, window, camera, or other inputs within it. Names and available capture methods can vary with your operating system and OBS version.
- Install OBS and run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. The wizard considers whether you intend to record or stream and your hardware, then recommends settings. Treat its recommendation as a starting point, not a guarantee that every scene will run smoothly. OBS Quick Start Guide
- Add the screen source. In the Sources box, select the plus button and add a display capture source to record a whole screen, or a window capture source for a specific application. On macOS, use the screen-capture source appropriate to your version. Check the preview before continuing; a display source may show notifications or other private information.
- Check audio inputs. Watch the microphone and desktop-audio meters while speaking and playing a sound you expect to capture. If the wrong device is selected, open OBS audio settings and choose the intended microphone or output device. A brief meter response is a useful check, but make a test recording to confirm the captured sound is intelligible.
- Confirm recording output. In Settings, open Output and review the recording path and format. In Video, review the base (canvas) and output resolution and frame rate. Higher resolution and frame rate can increase resource needs and file size; use the wizard’s recommendation as a baseline and adjust for the result you need.
- Record a short test. Select Start Recording, perform the actions and speak as you will during the real session, then stop and play the file. Confirm that the image, sound, and file location are correct before recording something important. OBS advises: “We strongly encourage running a test for a few minutes to make sure that there are no issues, rather than just jumping in to your first stream or recording.” OBS Project, Quick Start Guide
Will OBS run on your computer?
The OBS requirements page lists Windows 10 or 11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU; macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later with Intel or Apple Silicon and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU; and Linux/Unix with OpenGL 3.3 plus X window system or Wayland. These are basic requirements, not a promise of smooth recording on every compatible machine. OBS says resource demands vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. The page is dated August 25, 2021, so check the current requirements and support information for your operating system before installing. OBS system requirements

How to record and share with Loom
Loom’s workflow centers on capturing a screen, camera, or audio and then opening the video to edit or share it. On its PC recorder page, Loom says a link is copied after recording. Exact controls can differ by platform and product version. Loom screen recorder
- Choose what to capture. Select the screen, camera, and audio inputs relevant to your message. If you include a screen, close private tabs and files and check which display or window is selected.
- Record the message. Make a brief test if microphone choice or framing matters. Speak clearly and confirm that the required screen content is visible before recording the full explanation.
- Open the resulting video. Use Loom’s video page to edit or share the recording. Before sending a link, check who can access it in the current sharing controls; do not assume that a link is private or limited to its recipient.

Privacy and sharing checks
Before you record
- In OBS, inspect the preview and source list. A display capture can expose notifications, messages, or unrelated windows; choose a single application window when that is sufficient.
- Check OBS audio meters and devices. Desktop audio and microphone capture depend on configuration, so do not assume the intended inputs are active or that other sounds are excluded.
- In Loom, check the selected screen, camera, and audio inputs, and review access settings before sharing the result.
Loom’s available SOC 3 report covers the historical period April 1, 2021 through March 31, 2022. It describes controls for that period, not a current audit attestation or a verified description of today’s sharing interface. The cited materials do not establish a current side-by-side comparison of how OBS and Loom handle data, so avoid assuming recordings stay only on a device or making a blanket security ranking. Common problems and fixes
- OBS records a black screen or the wrong window: Check the selected capture source and its properties, then verify the preview before recording. For macOS, confirm that you selected the appropriate screen-capture source.
- Your microphone or desktop sound is missing: Select the intended devices in OBS audio settings and watch their meters. In Loom, confirm the chosen audio inputs before starting. Record and play a short test; meters alone do not confirm that the saved file sounds right.
- OBS recording stutters or the computer struggles: Reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, or try a different encoder setting. Resource use depends on these choices and the hardware, so change one setting at a time and test again. OBS system requirements
- Your Loom Starter recording stops at five minutes: The pricing page lists five minutes per screen recording for Starter. If the work routinely needs longer recordings, consider whether a listed paid plan fits, or use OBS if your computer can handle local capture. Loom pricing
- A Loom recipient cannot view the video: Reopen the current sharing controls and check access for that video, then send the appropriate link or invite. Do not rely on historical descriptions of Loom’s sharing options as a guide to today’s interface.
Which screen recorder should you choose?
- Start with OBS for tutorials, demonstrations, or other recordings where you need to choose and arrange sources or tune output. It also makes sense to consider when free recordings often exceed Loom Starter’s five-minute limit, provided your machine handles the workload.
- Start with Loom for concise work updates or explainers where the value is quick screen-and-camera capture followed by hosted sharing and team review. Check plan limits and video access before depending on it.
- Try both with a short, non-sensitive test if you are unsure. Compare setup time, whether the captured image and audio meet your needs, how sharing works for your recipients, and whether the recording fits your plan or machine.
