Choose StreamYard if you want a browser-based webinar workflow with registration, an embedded player, and simple guest access. Choose OBS if you want detailed control over scenes, sources, audio, and output—and are prepared to configure and rehearse the setup. Both can support screen-led teaching with a camera and microphone. The deciding difference is whether you value integrated webinar operations or configurable desktop production.

What each tool is designed to handle
StreamYard: managed browser-based production and webinar hosting
StreamYard is a browser-based live production and recording studio. Its On-Air webinar feature brings registration, an embeddable webinar, browser-based audience access without downloads, live chat, and optional on-demand viewing into the webinar workflow. On-Air starts with the Advanced plan, and viewer limits vary by plan. StreamYard On-Air does not include built-in admission payments; for a paid event, arrange payment and access control separately. Check the current On-Air guide and pricing page before deciding.
OBS: configurable desktop production
OBS Studio is free, open-source software for recording and live streaming. It captures desktop and window content, webcams, and other sources, then combines them in scenes. It also provides audio mixing, filters, transitions, hotkeys, Studio Mode, and plugin and script extensibility. You control more of the production, but you also configure the sources, audio, and output yourself. OBS’s Quick Start Guide walks through that initial setup.
Which should you use for a webinar?
Choose StreamYard On-Air when attendee operations matter most
- You want to collect registrations and direct attendees to an embedded player.
- You want attendees to watch in a browser without a download, and may want on-demand viewing afterward.
- You want guests to join through a browser-based workflow rather than asking them to install production software.
- You need to plan for a particular audience size: confirm the current viewer cap for the plan you will use.
- You plan to charge admission: On-Air does not process paid admission by itself, so set up a separate payment or access-control arrangement.
Choose OBS when you need production control
- You need precise scene composition, source placement, audio filters, transitions, or hotkey control.
- You are comfortable managing desktop capture and audio devices and can rehearse the complete setup.
- You want software the OBS Help Portal says is free for any use, including commercial use, with no watermarks or usage limits.
For a straightforward screen-led class, decide by workflow
Both can show slides or a screen alongside a camera and microphone. StreamYard is the more integrated path when guest access and webinar delivery are priorities; OBS is the more configurable path when the instructor wants to shape the production. Neither choice alone establishes better learning outcomes or guarantees that a class will run without interruption.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Setup and rehearsal: what to check before class
If you use OBS
- Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. OBS says the wizard considers intended use, computer resources, and—when streaming—network conditions.
- Add and verify sources. Add the display or window, webcam, and audio devices the lesson needs. Confirm the correct monitor or application is visible and the microphone is audible.
- Review output settings against your computer. The right resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity depend on the system and workload. Meeting OBS’s system requirements does not guarantee that your computer can stream or record at your chosen settings.
- Test the actual class sequence. Record or stream a short rehearsal. Check slide changes, audio levels, scene transitions, and the resulting recording before the live session. OBS recommends a test rather than going straight into a real stream or recording. OBS System Requirements · OBS Quick Start Guide
If you use StreamYard
- Check camera and microphone access. Confirm browser permissions and the intended camera and audio devices.
- Test the attendee route. Try the actual webinar link or embed and confirm how a learner will join, including a late arrival.
- Rehearse guests and shared material. Check guest instructions, browser permissions, slide sharing, and network conditions with the people and devices you will actually use.
- Confirm recording settings and plan limits. Verify that the selected plan includes the recording and audience capacity you need, and test playback or download access. StreamYard’s published paid-plan features and limits can change; check its current pricing page and feature guide.
Have a class-day fallback
Rehearse screen transitions, audio, guest handoffs, recording, and the view learners get if they join late. Keep the slide deck and session link available to the instructor, and have a backup way to contact attendees if the planned route fails.

OBS is free and open source. The OBS Help Portal says it can be used commercially and has no watermarks or usage limits. Free software does not remove the time required to configure and rehearse a production.

StreamYard plan details
StreamYard offers free and paid plans. Its pricing page has listed On-Air for 100 viewers on Advanced, but plan limits, prices, and included features are subject to change and may vary by campaign, renewal terms, and offers. Paid-plan recording caps and features also depend on plan; StreamYard’s feature guide has described HD broadcasts up to 10 hours per stream on eligible paid plans. Verify the current viewer cap, recording terms, and displayed price before purchase rather than treating those figures as permanent. Plans & Pricing · Paid plan features
Compare the total workflow, not just the subscription
For OBS, account for the operator time and equipment already available to you. For StreamYard, compare the plan that fits your audience and recording needs, and account separately for any payment or access-control tool needed for a paid event. Use the current plan details and your expected attendee scale; a promotional price is not necessarily a long-term price.

Common problems and practical fixes
- OBS looks correct in preview but performs poorly in the real session: reduce production complexity or adjust output settings, then test again. Computer capability depends on resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity—not only whether minimum requirements are met.
- OBS does not capture the intended screen or sound: verify the selected display/window and audio devices, then make a short test recording to confirm both picture and sound.
- A StreamYard guest cannot be seen or heard: check that the guest has granted browser camera and microphone permissions, selected the right devices, and has a usable network connection; test before class.
- Attendees cannot access the webinar as expected: test the attendee link or embed in the browser and device environment learners are likely to use, and confirm the current plan’s viewer limit.
- The recording is unavailable or shorter than expected: review the plan’s current recording eligibility and limits, then test a recording and its playback or download workflow before the event.
- A paid webinar has no payment step: On-Air does not collect admission payments; connect a separate payment and access-control process.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is not an interactive training session but a YouTube channel that continuously plays uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is a different fit: it is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos, not a live camera or webinar-hosting tool. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Try StreamNeo’s free first day.
