To fill YouTube’s standard 16:9 player without unintended black bars, set your encoder’s output to a 16:9 resolution, make sure each playlist video is framed for that shape, and avoid adding padding or bars to the video itself. A 16:9 output cannot remove black pixels already baked into a source file; those clips need reframing or cropping. Preview and test the whole playlist before going public, because scaling and playlist controls differ by encoder.
Why black bars appear on a YouTube Live stream
YouTube’s standard player shape on a computer is 16:9, but the player can adapt to videos with other aspect ratios. Bars usually appear because the picture does not match the output frame, or because black bars are already part of the video image. YouTube advises: “For best results, avoid adding padding or black bars directly to your video.” YouTube Help: Video resolution & aspect ratios
- Bars baked into the source: The black area is part of the video’s pixels. Changing the stream resolution or YouTube player size will not remove it.
- Bars added during scaling: The encoder may preserve a differently shaped source by fitting it inside a 16:9 frame and filling the remaining space with black.
- Bars around a 16:9 source: The encoder may be adding padding even though the clip already matches the output frame.
Choose a 16:9 output resolution
Set both the encoder’s output canvas and its stream resolution to a 16:9 shape. YouTube lists these common 16:9 dimensions:
| Resolution | Use |
|---|---|
| 1920×1080 | 1080p output |
| 1280×720 | 720p output |
YouTube also lists 7680×4320, 3840×2160, 2560×1440, 854×480, 640×360, and 426×240 as 16:9 resolutions. Choose an output your source and encoder can handle reliably; a higher resolution does not fix bars already in the source. See YouTube’s aspect-ratio and resolution guidance.

Prepare every item in the playlist
- Check the source frame. Inspect each video, especially clips from different cameras or archives. Note whether it is 16:9 and whether black bars are part of the actual image.
- Reframe sources with baked-in bars. Crop or re-edit the video so the intended picture fills a 16:9 frame. Cropping can cut off content near the edges, so check faces, captions, titles, and other important details before using the revised clip.
- Choose how mismatched clips should fill the frame. If a source has a different shape, an encoder may offer a fit option that preserves the whole picture with empty space around it, or a fill/crop option that fills the frame while trimming some edges. The available controls and whether they apply per clip or across the playlist depend on the encoder.
- Check for unnecessary padding. A source already framed at 16:9 should not need extra black borders to fit a 16:9 output.
There is no universal menu name or setting path for scaling mixed-ratio playlist items. Consult the current documentation for your specific encoder, and check that transitions do not change the framing unexpectedly.
Configure YouTube and send the encoder feed
- Create or open the live stream in YouTube Studio. Configure the stream and obtain its stream key. YouTube’s encoder workflow supports software and standalone hardware encoders; enter the Studio stream key into the encoder as directed by its documentation. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings.
- Set the encoder’s output frame. Choose the 16:9 canvas and stream resolution you plan to use. Confirm that the playlist is being scaled into that output as intended.
- Preview the image. Look at the encoder preview and YouTube Live Control Room preview. Check for bars, cropping, and unexpected changes between playlist items.
- Run a test before the public broadcast. Use a private or unlisted test when appropriate, and play through every item in the playlist. YouTube specifically advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- Monitor during the stream. Watch the live preview and stream health, check audio and picture quality, and review any error messages. YouTube automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers, but you should still verify that the incoming frame is correct.
Troubleshoot black bars
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Bars remain around one particular playlist item | The source may contain baked-in bars, or it may have a different aspect ratio. | Inspect that file itself. Reframe/crop baked-in bars, or review the encoder’s fit versus fill behavior for that item. |
| Bars appear on a source that should be 16:9 | The encoder may be adding padding or using a mismatched canvas or output resolution. | Confirm the source and output are both 16:9 and inspect the encoder’s scaling settings. |
| The frame changes from clip to clip | Playlist sources have mixed dimensions or aspect ratios, or scaling is applied inconsistently. | Test each clip and transition. Check whether the encoder applies scaling per source or globally. |
| The preview looks right but the live result does not | The preview may not match the final stream output, or the encoder’s output configuration may differ from its preview. | Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health during a private or unlisted test, then review the encoder’s current documentation. |
| The image fills the frame but important content is cut off | A fill/crop setting is trimming the source edges to remove empty space. | Use fit if preserving the entire image matters, or re-edit the source with a deliberate crop after checking its edges. |
