Before you start, confirm that each account can go live, connect the required accounts or stream keys, and make sure your upload connection can sustain the combined bitrate if you send separate streams yourself.
What you need before multistreaming
- Live access on every destination. Verify that your accounts are in good standing and enabled for live streaming. TikTok LIVE access may require an application or review, and eligibility can vary; do not assume every account can stream through an encoder. YouTube’s multistream guidance and Restream’s TikTok and Twitch guide cover account access and setup.
- Credentials. A relay usually connects to your platform accounts; a direct-output setup may require each platform’s RTMP server URL and stream key. Treat keys as passwords: do not share them, and replace a key if it is exposed.
- Enough upload capacity. For direct, separate outputs, add the target bitrates together and leave headroom. YouTube’s example combines 6 Mbps and 4 Mbps streams into a 10 Mbps target and recommends 15–20 Mbps upload for stability. That is an example, not a universal bitrate prescription; encoder recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check YouTube’s current guidance and test your connection under realistic conditions.
- A format that works across destinations. Different platforms may have different layout and metadata needs. Preview each destination, especially if using one horizontal program for both conventional and vertical viewing.
Choose how to send the stream

YouTube describes local hardware or software encoding as a fit for creators seeking quality and control with a sufficiently powerful computer. A relay can reduce local upload and encoding demands, but it does not remove the need for a stable connection from your encoder to the relay. YouTube Help, Streamlabs, and Restream’s OBS guide describe these approaches.
Set up OBS with a cloud relay
- Check each destination account. Confirm you can start a live stream on YouTube, Twitch, TikTok, and Facebook. Resolve any platform-specific access or review requirement before scheduling a broadcast.
- Connect accounts in the relay. In the relay service, authorize the destinations you plan to use. If a platform is not supported through account connection, check whether the service accepts a custom RTMP destination and whether the platform provides the required server URL and key.
- Send OBS to the relay. In OBS, select the relay integration if available, or open OBS stream settings and enter the relay’s server and stream key. The exact labels depend on the service and current OBS version; use the relay’s current setup instructions rather than assuming a universal menu path.
- Select destinations and details. In the relay dashboard, choose the platforms for this broadcast. Set titles, descriptions, categories, and other destination-specific details where supported.
- Start and verify. Start the stream in OBS, then confirm that it appears and is healthy on each destination. Watch YouTube’s Live Control Room stream-health indicators and check the other platform previews as well. Restream’s OBS workflow describes connecting by account or key and choosing destinations.
Use Streamlabs’ multistream workflow
Streamlabs describes a workflow in which you link accounts and choose platforms in its go-live controls. Its feature page also describes custom RTMP and Dual Output, which can separate one horizontal and one vertical output. Broad multistreaming and Dual Output have different plan boundaries; check the current feature and plan details before relying on a particular option. Streamlabs’ current feature page and its quick setup guide explain the workflow. Interface labels can change.
- Link the destination accounts that you are authorized to use.
- Choose the platforms in the go-live controls and fill in any platform-specific title, description, or category options available.
- Review the output layout and destination previews, then start the broadcast and confirm each platform is receiving it.
Send separate outputs directly from a local encoder
A local multi-output setup sends a feed directly to each destination rather than asking a relay to distribute one incoming stream. It offers output control, but your computer and connection must sustain the work. YouTube’s instructions describe local encoding as an option when you have a powerful computer and want direct control. Consult its current encoder guidance for the codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate you choose.

- Enable live access and retrieve the correct stream server and key for every platform you will send to.
- In your encoder, create an output for each destination using that destination’s server URL and key. The exact steps depend on the encoder; avoid reusing one platform’s credentials for another.
- Choose compatible settings for each output. Add the output bitrates to estimate your total upload demand, and account for overhead and normal speed variation rather than planning to use every available Mbps.
- Run a private or test broadcast if the platforms and account settings permit it. Check the encoder’s dropped-frame or connection indicators and each platform’s stream health before relying on the setup for a public event.
Plan bandwidth and layouts
Calculate upload demand
For separate outputs, add the target bitrate of each feed. In YouTube’s example, a 6 Mbps stream plus a 4 Mbps stream totals 10 Mbps; its guidance recommends 15–20 Mbps upload for stability, particularly on a shared connection. Use that as an illustration of headroom, not a promise that the same ratio will fit every resolution, frame rate, codec, or network. A relay generally needs one outgoing contribution from your location, while the relay handles distribution onward.
Test the real connection
A speed-test result is only a snapshot. Test near the time and place you will broadcast, preferably when other household or office traffic is present. During the live test, monitor encoder connection status and the health indicators on the destination platforms. If the connection fluctuates, lower the target bitrate or use a relay instead of attempting multiple full-bitrate uploads.

Prepare for different screens and metadata
A single horizontal program may not present well in TikTok’s vertical viewing context. Restream’s guide says TikTok can transcode horizontal streams, but presentation behavior and eligibility may change; preview the TikTok destination before depending on that behavior. Streamlabs describes separate horizontal and vertical layouts through Dual Output. Platform-specific titles and descriptions may also be available through services such as Streamlabs. Restream’s integration guide and Streamlabs’ feature page describe these capabilities.
Follow platform rules while simulcasting
Twitch
Twitch’s simulcasting FAQ says its guidelines apply unless an agreement requires exclusivity. It prohibits using Twitch to direct viewers to another live stream and identifies degrading the Twitch viewing experience as a policy problem. Review the current Twitch simulcasting guidelines and any agreement attached to your account before going live; do not assume the same terms apply to every creator or deal.

YouTube, TikTok, and Facebook
Check the current live-stream rules, music and other copyright permissions, and account-specific access requirements on each service. Having a working stream key does not grant rights to broadcast material or guarantee account eligibility. Keep proof of permission for third-party footage, music, and other protected content, and avoid assuming that permission on one platform covers another.
Troubleshoot common multistream problems
