Choose software based on what your YouTube broadcast needs: for a simple camera presentation, YouTube’s webcam or mobile option may be enough; for gameplay, screen sharing, multiple scenes, or external audio and video equipment, use an encoder. Among desktop encoders, OBS Studio is a strong fit for creators who want open-source software and hands-on control, while Streamlabs may suit creators who value bundled alerts, widgets, and overlays. Whichever route you choose, test it on your actual computer and connection before an important broadcast.

First decide whether you need streaming software

YouTube supports webcam, mobile-device, and encoder approaches. Encoder software is most useful when you need to share a screen or gameplay, connect external audio or video equipment, or produce a more involved show with multiple cameras and microphones. A straightforward camera presentation may not need a separate encoder at all. YouTube’s guide, Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder, outlines the encoder workflow and typical hardware.

  • Webcam or mobile: Consider this for a simple presentation that does not need a desktop scene setup or external production inputs.
  • Encoder: Consider this for gameplay, screen sharing, external devices, or a production built from multiple sources.

Adding software can provide more production control, but it also adds setup and troubleshooting. Start with the simplest method that supports the show you actually plan to make.

Compare OBS Studio and Streamlabs

Decision OBS Studio Streamlabs
Best fit Creators who want open-source software and direct control over their setup. Creators who value a more bundled workflow with tools such as alerts, widgets, and overlays.
Customization and tools OBS describes configurable transitions and broad platform support. Streamlabs offers several YouTube workflows and bundles creator tools in its desktop offering.
Workflow options Desktop encoder software. Desktop software, an OBS plugin, mobile, browser-based Talk Studio, and console workflows are listed by Streamlabs.
Desktop operating systems Check the current OBS download and system requirements for your computer. Streamlabs lists Windows and macOS support for its desktop product; confirm current requirements before installing.

OBS says its software is free and open-source on its official product page. Streamlabs describes its current YouTube workflows and desktop features on its official site. Product features and availability can change, so check each product’s current listing and requirements before choosing.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use this decision path

  1. For a basic camera presentation: Start by checking YouTube’s webcam or mobile route. Choose a separate encoder only if you need its production capabilities.
  2. For gameplay, screen sharing, or external equipment: Choose encoder software. Make a list of the sources you need—such as a game, camera, microphone, or capture device—before setting up scenes.
  3. Choose OBS for hands-on control: It is a strong starting point if open-source software and direct customization suit your comfort level.
  4. Choose Streamlabs for bundled creator tools: Its alerts, widgets, and overlays may suit a workflow where those features are useful. Check that the specific workflow and device you plan to use are currently supported.
  5. Rehearse on the actual computer: Run the intended sources and settings, then check video, audio routing, dropped frames, and encoding load before broadcasting to an audience.

Check performance and production hardware

A computer that can install or run an encoder is not necessarily powerful enough for every combination of resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity. OBS’s system requirements guidance notes that CPU needs vary with those factors and that compatibility does not guarantee adequate performance. Test your intended setup rather than relying on a minimum requirement as a performance promise.

  • Audio: Confirm the microphone is selected and its audio reaches the stream. YouTube identifies an external microphone as typical hardware for some encoder setups.
  • Video and sources: Check that each camera, capture device, and screen or game source appears as expected.
  • Workload: Test the planned resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene load together; changing one can affect the computer’s workload.
  • Connection: Rehearse on the internet connection you expect to use and watch for dropped frames.

YouTube names microphones, webcams, headphones, and additional camera inputs among typical hardware for casual, gaming, and more advanced streams. The equipment you need depends on the production; an external microphone is an option, not a requirement for every broadcast.

If your stream needs HDR

HDR has specific codec and configuration requirements. YouTube’s HDR live-streaming instructions specify H.265/HEVC and describe OBS settings for that workflow. Check the current YouTube instructions and confirm your computer has an appropriate hardware HEVC encoder before building an HDR setup. Do not assume ordinary SDR settings will satisfy the HDR requirements.

Troubleshoot before going live

  • Video or audio source is missing: Check the selected input and device connection in the encoder, then confirm the source is active in the production setup.
  • Audio does not reach the stream: Verify the intended microphone or audio input is selected and routed to the broadcast; make a rehearsal recording or test stream to confirm.
  • Dropped frames: Check the connection and repeat the rehearsal with the intended stream settings. If the computer is also struggling, reduce workload by adjusting the resolution, frame rate, encoder, or scene complexity.
  • Encoding overload or unstable performance: Test a less demanding combination of resolution, frame rate, and scene load. Hardware capability varies with these choices, so a change that works on one computer may not suit another.
  • HDR does not work as expected: Recheck YouTube’s current HDR protocol, H.265/HEVC selection, OBS configuration, and hardware HEVC support.
