How to Stream a Vertical Prerecorded Video to YouTube Live with StreamYard

StreamYard can schedule prerecorded video to start automatically on YouTube Live, but its documentation does not clearly confirm portrait output for that workflow.

You can schedule a prerecorded video to play automatically as a YouTube Live broadcast in StreamYard. What StreamYard’s current help pages do not clearly confirm is whether that automated prerecorded workflow lets you select a 9:16 portrait output. If a guaranteed vertical broadcast matters, check the orientation controls in your current prerecorded flow or confirm with StreamYard before scheduling.

What StreamYard’s prerecorded workflow does—and what remains unclear

StreamYard’s Pre-recorded Streaming help page describes scheduling an uploaded video to start automatically as a live broadcast, even when you are offline. Playback ends when the video finishes. The workflow is useful when the priority is an unattended scheduled start.

StreamYard separately documents portrait studio broadcasts in a 9:16 frame. Its portrait-mode instructions, MARS instructions, and supported-destinations page describe orientation options for studio broadcasts or destinations, but do not clearly state that those options are available to the automated prerecorded-video flow. Therefore, a vertical source file alone is not proof that the scheduled stream will be delivered as a full-screen vertical YouTube Live.

Prepare the vertical video file

Start with portrait 9:16 footage if you want vertical framing. StreamYard says native vertical video fills its portrait stage, while landscape material in portrait mode can leave black bars. That describes its portrait studio behavior; it does not establish how automated prerecorded uploads are framed.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • File type and codec: MP4 with H.264 video.
  • Bitrate: no more than 10 Mbps (10,000 Kbps).
  • Resolution: up to 1080p on paid plans.
  • File size: the help page lists a 10 GB upload limit for Core and Advanced, and 25 GB for Teams and Business.
  • Duration: the listed maximums are 2 hours on Core, 4 hours on Advanced, and 8 hours on Team and StreamYard Business.

These are StreamYard’s published product limits, not guarantees about audience playback. Plan names and limits may change, so check the current prerecorded-stream requirements before preparing a long or large upload. StreamYard’s video optimization guidance recommends H.264 (x264), constant 30 fps, AAC audio, and web-optimized/faststart and Align A/V options; HandBrake is suggested for encoding. Keep the total bitrate below 10,000 Kbps.

Connect and enable your YouTube channel

  1. In StreamYard, open Destinations and connect YouTube. Sign in with the Google account that owns the channel or has owner/manager access to its Brand Account, then select the intended channel and grant the requested access.
  2. Make sure live streaming is enabled for that YouTube channel. StreamYard says channel verification and activation may take up to 24 hours.
  3. Check any additional YouTube live-stream eligibility or policy restrictions that apply to the channel. StreamYard notes that the mobile-app 1,000-subscriber condition does not apply to its connection workflow; that does not mean every YouTube requirement is waived.

See StreamYard’s YouTube connection instructions if the channel does not appear or authorization fails.

Schedule the prerecorded broadcast

  1. In StreamYard, select Create, then Live Stream, then Pre-recorded video.
  2. Upload a local video file or select a previous StreamYard recording, then choose the connected YouTube channel as the destination.
  3. Enter the title and description, and choose the scheduled date and time. Confirm the time zone before saving so the event starts when your audience expects.
  4. If you want an advance YouTube announcement and a shareable link before the stream begins, select Schedule an announcement and complete its details. StreamYard says the link becomes available at the announcement’s scheduled post time. Without an announcement, the watch-page link is not available until the stream goes live.
  5. Review the broadcast details and schedule it. StreamYard says prerecorded broadcasts can be scheduled up to 365 days ahead; confirm the current limit in its supported-destinations documentation.

An announcement cannot be added after the prerecorded stream has been created, so decide about it before scheduling. For general YouTube scheduling, StreamYard’s scheduling instructions recommend a 1280 × 720 px thumbnail. That is thumbnail guidance, not the video’s aspect ratio.

Verify orientation before relying on a vertical result

Before promoting the event as a vertical live stream, inspect the current prerecorded broadcast flow for an explicit portrait or 9:16 output setting. If it is not present, ask StreamYard support whether the automated workflow accepts the intended portrait output to YouTube. The published studio and MARS orientation instructions are not enough to guarantee that the prerecorded automation uses the same controls.

In a regular StreamYard portrait studio, orientation is selected before going live and cannot be changed after the broadcast starts. Its portrait documentation gives 720 Ă— 1280 px as a suggested size for portrait brand assets; that is not a requirement for the source video. MARS can send landscape and portrait from one studio session to YouTube, creating two separate YouTube posts and counting as two destinations. The documentation says streaming both formats to YouTube requires a paid plan, while MARS itself is described as available on all plans. Neither point confirms that prerecorded automation has MARS controls.

Do not label the event a YouTube Shorts livestream. StreamYard says Shorts is for short-form video posts and does not support live streams.

Choose automation or a host-led studio broadcast

Approach Automatic start Portrait controls Overlays, comments, intro/outro Host involvement
Automated prerecorded broadcast Starts at the scheduled time while you are offline; ends when the video finishes. Selection for vertical output is not clearly documented. Comments cannot be overlaid; overlays and other studio media cannot be controlled during playback. No host needs to start it.
Regular studio broadcast with prerecorded video played as long-form media Not the same unattended automatic start. Studio portrait controls are documented; configure before going live. Use the studio workflow if you need its live controls or an intro/outro. A host must start the broadcast.

StreamYard says automated prerecorded output is no longer automatically saved to its library. If you need studio-directed playback, use the regular studio route and plan for someone to start the broadcast.

Troubleshoot before the scheduled start

  • The video will not upload: check that it is an MP4 with H.264 video, stays below the 10 Mbps ceiling, and meets the file-size and duration limits for your plan. Re-encode with H.264 and the optimization settings above if needed.
  • You cannot select the YouTube channel: verify you signed into the correct Google account, have owner or Brand Account manager access, and granted StreamYard access. Confirm YouTube live streaming is enabled; verification may require up to 24 hours.
  • You need a share link before the event: the automated broadcast must be created with a scheduled announcement. Without one, the link appears only when the stream goes live; an announcement cannot be added afterward.
  • The scheduled broadcast does not appear vertical: do not assume the source file will force a 9:16 output. Confirm a portrait setting is available in the prerecorded flow or contact StreamYard support before relying on it.
  • You need comments or overlays in the video: automated playback cannot show comments on-stream or use the studio’s overlay and media controls. Switch to a host-started studio broadcast if those controls are essential.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an ongoing YouTube channel stream made from uploaded videos rather than one scheduled event, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It supports the video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card.
