If StreamYard reports that a YouTube stream key is invalid, first check which connection method the destination uses. If it uses a key, copy the current key from the intended stream in YouTube Studio and update the key in the StreamYard destination; check the YouTube server URL separately. If StreamYard connects to YouTube by account login instead, there may be no key to replace. YouTube’s general encoder guidance covers updating a key, but the exact StreamYard message and current reconnect controls are not confirmed in YouTube’s instructions.
First identify how StreamYard connects to YouTube
YouTube supports third-party streaming software that sends a feed using a stream key, as well as software sign-in paths that do not use a key. The right fix depends on which one your StreamYard destination uses.
- Key-based connection: YouTube’s Live Control Room shows the stream key, which the encoder uses to send the feed to YouTube. Follow the refresh steps below.
- Account-login connection: If the destination signs in to YouTube directly and does not expose a stream-key setting, do not assume a key is missing or try to invent a field. YouTube advises contacting the third-party software provider for this connection path. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide describes both paths.
The wording “stream key is invalid” alone does not establish which connection path is active or prove that the key is the underlying problem.
Refresh the key if the destination uses one
- Open the intended stream in YouTube Studio. Go to Go Live / Live Control Room and select the stream associated with the StreamYard broadcast. In the Stream tab, locate its stream key.
- Copy the current key. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance says to copy the key from Live Control Room and paste it into the encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not share or publish it. YouTube describes keys as credentials that direct an encoder where to send the feed and allow YouTube to accept it. See Manage live stream settings.
- Update the key saved for the actual StreamYard YouTube destination. Make sure you are changing the destination used by this broadcast, not another saved destination. StreamYard’s precise current menu labels and reconnect steps are not established here, so follow the controls shown in your account or ask StreamYard support if you cannot locate them.
- Check the server URL separately. YouTube’s encoder setup treats the server URL and stream key as separate settings. If the StreamYard configuration presents both, confirm that the YouTube server URL is in the URL field and the key is in the key field; do not paste one value into the other field. - Retry the connection. If it still fails, note the exact message and whether it appears in StreamYard, YouTube Live Control Room, or both. That distinction helps separate a rejected connection from a problem reported after YouTube receives the feed.
Check whether the key was reused or reset
YouTube’s “Reuse settings” option copies the previous stream’s metadata, settings, and stream key. A new stream created that way may therefore be using the previous key, rather than a newly generated one. Compare the key associated with the selected stream to the value configured for the StreamYard destination.

If the key was reset, the encoder must be updated with the new value. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key. After a reset, replace the saved value in the relevant key-based destination; changing a key in YouTube alone does not update the value held by the encoder. YouTube’s stream settings guidance explains reuse and reset behavior.
Tell a key error apart from a stream-health error
A connection can reach YouTube and still have a feed or encoding problem. YouTube’s Live Control Room shows timestamped messages beside the Health Indicator, and its error guidance covers issues such as format, bitrate, audio, video, keyframe frequency, and resolution. Those diagnostics are distinct from proof that a credential is invalid.

Read the exact message and timestamp in Live Control Room before changing encoder settings. If YouTube identifies an ingest or stream-health issue, use the specific message to guide the next check rather than repeatedly resetting a key. See YouTube live streaming error messages.
When to contact support
- If the connection uses YouTube account login without a stream key, YouTube directs creators to the third-party software provider’s support team.
- If you refreshed the key for the intended stream, confirmed the separate URL and key fields where applicable, and the StreamYard destination still reports an error, contact StreamYard support for its current reconnect workflow.
- When contacting support, provide the exact error text, where it appears, the selected YouTube stream, and the time of the failed attempt. Do not send your stream key in a public post or ordinary support message unless the provider supplies a secure method and specifically requests it.
