To find a moment in a large video archive with AI, first confirm that the files are indexed, then search using the clue you actually have: describe what appears on screen, search dialogue in a transcript, or filter by known metadata such as date or location. Open promising results and check the marked time range in context before using it. The right tool depends on whether the footage is already in an editing project or spread across a team’s storage systems.

Choose a search tool that covers your footage

AI search is only useful for media the tool can access and has analyzed. A desktop editor’s search may cover media imported into a project, not every drive or shared archive your team owns. If editors need to search across multiple storage locations, evaluate a media asset management (MAM) system designed for that scope.

What to compare Project-level search in Premiere Pro Archive-wide search with Iconik
Scope Media imported into a Premiere project, according to Adobe’s Media Intelligence help page. Iconik describes one search interface spanning onsite systems, customer-owned cloud buckets, and Iconik-managed storage. See its media asset search page and Search help page.
Visual clues Natural-language visual search. Adobe says results can identify sections of a clip with In and Out points. Iconik describes AI-detected objects and scenes on its media asset search page.
Speech Search text when dialogue has been transcribed; Adobe’s Search panel combines Text results with other result types. Iconik describes time-coded transcript search that can take users to moments in long-form media.
Metadata Search metadata and narrow results with filters. Iconik describes structured metadata fields and controlled terms at ingest.
Administration and processing Adobe says analysis and searches happen locally. Its index is model-specific; sidecar caching options are documented for analyzed media. Iconik says AI features are administrator-controlled and describes processing existing assets using proxy files and audio extraction. These are vendor descriptions, not independent audits.
Best fit Your footage is already in Premiere projects and the people searching it work there. Your team needs shared search across storage locations, with a managed ingest and metadata workflow.

This is a comparison of documented scope and features, not a ranking of search accuracy. The Adobe pages linked above were last updated June 2 and August 19, 2026, respectively. Iconik’s linked pages do not state a publication date.

Prepare the archive before searching

Map where the originals live

List the storage locations, the people who need access, and whether the target footage is already in an editing project. If it is in Premiere, import the relevant media and let Media Intelligence finish analyzing it. Adobe documents an option to analyze imported media and a background progress indicator; until analysis is complete, visual results may not be available for those clips. For a team archive using Iconik, establish the organization’s ingest, indexing, and metadata process first rather than assuming every asset is immediately searchable.

Make metadata useful at ingest

For material that will be searched repeatedly, agree on consistent fields and terms for facts editors know in advance, such as shoot date, location, camera or media type. A folder name alone is not a substitute for searchable metadata. Iconik describes defining structured metadata at ingest; Adobe’s project search can search metadata and use filters. Keep naming and metadata consistent so people can combine AI discovery with dependable known attributes.

Search with the clue you have

For what appears on screen: describe the shot

Use a specific, multiword description that combines the subject, action, setting, composition, lighting, or camera angle when those details matter. For example, try “a wide shot of a crowded train platform at dusk” rather than “train.” Adobe recommends descriptive visual queries and trying alternate phrasings if the first search misses.

In Premiere, use the Search panel and inspect the Visuals results. Adobe says visual search accepts natural-language descriptions, whereas text and metadata searches rely on exact text matches. Its help page says visual search supports English-language queries; check the current version and availability for your setup if language support matters.

For dialogue: search the spoken words

If the clue is a line of dialogue, search the transcript rather than describing the scene. A transcript query is especially useful when you remember a phrase, name, or topic but not what the shot looked like. It only helps when speech has been transcribed and the relevant media is indexed for transcript search.

For known facts: use metadata and filters

When you know a shoot date, location, frame rate, or media type, search that property or use a filter rather than relying on a visual description. Metadata narrows the candidate set using recorded facts; it is not interchangeable with visual or transcript search.

Change one clue at a time

If a visual query returns nothing useful, try a synonym or describe the same moment from another angle—such as the action or setting instead of the subject. Adobe cautions that semantically similar English phrases can produce different results. For transcripts and metadata, check spelling and the exact text stored in the transcript or field.

Verify the candidate clip before using it

A search result is a lead, not proof that the archive contains no other matching moment or that the suggested range is the one you need. Open the source clip, inspect the marked range, and review enough footage before and after it to understand the action and choose an appropriate edit point. Premiere visual results can include In and Out points for a specific section, according to Adobe’s Media Intelligence and Search panel FAQ.

Keep the index usable for the next editor, too. Adobe says its index is model-specific and documents sidecar caching options for analyzed media. If your team expects to move projects or share analysis across applications, confirm what analysis data is retained and whether the other editor or application can use it.

Know what AI search can miss

  • Small details and fast motion: Adobe says Premiere’s visual model analyzes a smaller version of footage as a series of still images, so it may miss small details or fast movement.
  • People and text in the image: Adobe says visual search does not identify people and does not use OCR to read text. Finding a stop sign visually does not mean the tool has read its lettering.
  • Unanalyzed media: A clip that has not finished analysis may not return visual matches. Check the background analysis progress before deciding the query failed.
  • Coverage across storage: A project search cannot find files outside its documented scope. Check whether the relevant media is imported or use an archive-wide system if it is distributed across storage locations.
  • Search completeness: No cited source establishes that AI finds every relevant moment or provides independently measured archive-search accuracy. Maintain metadata and naming practices, and inspect candidate ranges yourself.

Adobe says analysis time varies with computer speed and footage complexity. Its FAQ describes modern video-editing computers as able to analyze hours of footage in minutes, but this is Adobe’s qualified expectation—not a guaranteed duration or independent benchmark.

Troubleshoot common search failures

What you see What to check What to do
No visual results for an imported clip Whether Media Intelligence analysis has finished. Check the background progress indicator and wait for analysis to complete, then search again.
A visual query misses a shot you know is there Whether the description is too broad, depends on tiny details, or describes fast motion. Try a more specific alternate phrase describing the subject, action, setting, composition, lighting, or angle. Inspect the clip manually if the key clue is small or fleeting.
A search for words visible in the frame returns nothing Whether you expect visual search to read signs, titles, or labels. Premiere visual search does not use OCR. Search metadata or a transcript if the words are recorded there; otherwise review the footage directly.
A person-focused query does not identify the person Whether the query depends on face or identity recognition. Adobe says Premiere visual search does not identify people. Search a transcript or metadata if those contain a useful clue, or inspect the footage.
A phrase query does not find spoken dialogue Whether the media has a searchable transcript and whether the words match its text. Use transcript search only after transcription is available; check likely wording and spelling.
A known date or location fails to narrow results Whether that value exists in searchable metadata and how it is written. Search the actual metadata field or filter on it; if the archive has not recorded the attribute consistently, correct the metadata workflow for future ingest.
A team member cannot find media that another editor can Whether the file is in that user’s project or covered by the shared archive index and permissions. Confirm the search tool’s scope and team ingest/access setup. Do not assume a project-level index covers other drives or shared storage.

Evaluate an archive-wide system for a team

If footage is spread across several storage systems, compare tools by whether they cover the originals or suitable proxies, how ingest and metadata are governed, whether transcripts include time references, and how directly results lead back to a usable range. Also ask who controls AI processing and what data is processed. Iconik says its AI features are administrator-controlled and describes using proxy files and audio extraction for existing assets, but its privacy, processing, and scale statements are vendor claims; the cited pages do not independently audit security or comparative retrieval accuracy. Confirm details against your organization’s requirements before committing an archive to a workflow.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a separate option for keeping uploaded videos live on a YouTube channel; it does not index or search a video archive, and it does not stream from a camera. If your goal is to keep a finished recording or playlist looping on YouTube, the steps are: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps it running without a computer, OBS, or home connection staying on; it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. Uploaded quality is preserved up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, then start the free day.
