Live game streaming has made gaming a shared, real-time media experience: people watch a creator play, talk with other viewers, and sometimes participate through platform features or creator-led events. Esports now has a creator co-streaming lane alongside official broadcasts. The audience figures show how large and varied this activity has become, but they do not prove that streaming causes more game sales or changes how games are designed.
How has live game streaming changed gaming?
Streaming adds people and conversation to the experience of playing and watching a game. A broadcast can combine gameplay with a creator’s commentary and a chat where viewers respond to one another. That makes a stream more than a recording of a match: it can become a place where viewers gather around a player, a game, or a community.
The social role is not limited to watching professional play. In a 2023 peer-reviewed study, Ella Kokinda and Paige Rodeghero interviewed 15 software and game-development streamers. Those participants described streaming as a way to support accountability, self-education, community, and visibility. The findings help explain what streaming can offer people who broadcast development work, but the study was not a survey of all gaming streamers or viewers.
Twitch Chief Product Officer Mike Minton described the platform as “a place for people to come together around their shared love of gaming” in Twitch’s State of Gaming 2026 report. That is a company executive’s characterization; the report’s viewing and participation figures provide separate evidence of the scale of activity on Twitch.

How large is game streaming, and how should the figures be read?
The figures below cover different periods and scopes. Twitch’s figure is for gaming content on one platform during part of 2026; Stream Hatchet’s annual total covers global live-streaming viewership across its measured market in 2025. They are not like-for-like totals and should not be used to rank one platform against the entire market.

Those numbers show substantial viewing, but they describe different universes. Live-streaming platforms also carry non-gaming content, so total live-streaming hours should not be treated as game-viewing hours. Twitch’s numbers are its own platform data; GameSquare’s annual release summarizes Stream Hatchet’s market estimates. Neither figure, as reported here, establishes independent auditing.

Esports now has official broadcasts and creator co-streams
Fans can follow a tournament through its official event channel or through creators who co-stream or comment on the event. These are overlapping ways of experiencing the same competition, not separate tournaments.
In its Q2 2025 report, Stream Hatchet said esports viewership was evenly split between co-streaming channels and official esports channels in its measured market. It also reported 729 million hours watched for tournaments in that quarter, 6% more than a year earlier, despite 37% fewer tournaments than in Q2 2024. These are historical quarterly figures, not a description of the market in 2026.

The split suggests that creator-led commentary had become a substantial viewing lane alongside official coverage in that report’s period. It does not mean every event permits co-streams, or that official and creator broadcasts offer the same presentation, access, or commentary.
Viewers can participate, not just watch
Chat lets viewers react and speak with one another while a game is on screen. Some platforms also connect viewing to specific in-game or account rewards. These features make participation possible, but not every stream has rewards, and viewing hours do not measure how much viewers interact.

Twitch’s State of Gaming 2026 report says streams using its DropsEnabled tag generated 1.6 billion hours during the report’s period ending September 1, 2026. Twitch also reported that 40 million users participated and claimed Drops in that period. Those are Twitch figures about its own Drops feature; they should not be read as a count of all viewers, all platforms, or purchases caused by streams.

For Q2 2025, GameSquare’s summary of Stream Hatchet’s report assigned Twitch 54% of tracked market share, YouTube Gaming just under a quarter, and Kick almost 11%. These are shares for that report’s measured market and quarter, not current 2026 shares or permanent rankings. Quarterly shares, annual market-wide hours, and one platform’s partial-year watch time answer different questions.

GameSquare CEO Justin Kenna called 2025 “a turning point for live streaming, with growth increasingly driven by heightened competition, broader platform utilization, and more sophisticated, creator-led strategies” in the company’s January 29, 2026 release. That is an executive’s interpretation of the market. The reported figures support the narrower points that the measured market grew and that platform shares and viewing formats vary; they do not make that characterization a neutral or timeless finding.
What the numbers do—and do not—show about gaming
Streaming has clearly changed how people can watch games and gather around them: a creator’s channel can sit beside an official esports broadcast, viewers can talk in real time, and platform-specific features can link eligible viewing with reward claims. The studies and platform reports document those formats and behaviors.
They do not establish how much livestream exposure changes game discovery, sales, or game design. Those effects are plausible topics for further study, but the figures above are about viewing, market share, and participation—not a causal estimate of purchases or design decisions.
